2019 BMW X5 | Technology Gone Mad!!!

- Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. Today I’m driving a 2019 X5, BMW’s midsize luxury SUV. It’s also date night in the Muzio house so my wife and I driving this X5 XDrive 40i to the movies (Booksmart, if you’re curious). Base price for a new BMW X5, with its 335-horsepower, 3.0 turbocharged inline 6-cylinder, is roughly $62,000. Tack on fancy options like our test car and the MSRP rises to a cool $74,000. If you want the optional 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 prices can top $90,000. That might seem pricy…and it is. Then again, that mountain of cash does buy some interesting features.
Note, many of those “interesting” features were plagued by technical failures on our drive. Steering assist worked intermittently, the steering wheel was reluctant to motor into position, “gesture control” proved difficult to control, and the convoluted iDrive infotainment system nearly made my brain explode. At the same time, there’s plenty to like about the 2019 BMW X5. Simply put, there’s a lot to discuss before our movie starts. Watch and enjoy. Glad to see you and your wife both having a lovely sense of humor here. Overall for the high price, it really doesn’t look to wow anymore than the Audi or Acura MDX.
After months of watching any and every new car review related on TH-cam/Motorweek and reading it all on Jalopnik, Car and Driver, and Road and Track; I realize now that more emphasis really needs to be put into the long term year/mileage tests, not companies just loaning cars out to reviewers for 3 weeks when the car is brand new fresh from the factory.
Everyone raves about the Alfa Romeo sedan’s driving dynamics, sun visors, cupholders, the Stinger’s price, new Corolla hatchback’s styling, the Model3’s battery, or the Mazd3’s exterior look; however, nobody really ever talks about when the electronics all go to take a dump, the CVT or Automatic transmission commits suicide, or has to waste time over weeks getting dumb things like the steering column not being mounted correctly from the factory.

I also experienced the aggressive keep assist, I didn't signal fast enough before getting into the turn lane and it about yanked me into another car in the other lane. So yes very aggressive and would suggest it be turned off or offer levels like Hyundai does. The new Mercedes GLE is slightly smoother and not as aggressive.
Whachis Sorry you had the same experience we did. The X5’s lane keep assist was truly outrageous.
I like to save my gestures for my fellow drivers. I prefer knobs. No really, I love knobs.
Happy late Father's Day Micah! Great video, I feel like this car is quite the technological powerhouse (if a bit gimmicky), but I personally prefer the looks of the new GLE. I also dislike how BMW pinches you for every penny to get features you can find on far cheaper vehicles, granted you're paying more for the badge/quality than the actual features.

Micah you need to keep your eyes on the road to have them working. Don't forget the front cam in the instrument cluster reads your eyes.

Note to self, don't get an X5 lol I'm a techie guy, so all those mishaps would piss me off so much. Although, I'm hoping this was just a fluke and really wasn't all that bad. Great review! I've actually been thinking about getting into this gig myself.

Karayah Holly Since you said “vehicles” here’s the rundown. Honda CR-V for family duty. Yamaha FZ-09 for two-wheel commuting. Enstrom 280C because helicopters are amazing and my wife is VERY understanding. 😄

Jesse Schenendorf Yup. I would specifically avoid it due to the CVT. Give it a test drive though. You might feel differently.

$74K? There are much better alternatives for $30K less. The only reason for this vehicle is to make yourself feel more special than you really are.
tomny67 what are some of these other alternatives? I really like the new Kia telluride but it’s just too big. I also really like the Hyundai Santa Fe. But then I also really like the x5. It does drive several classes above these cars w it’s ultra quiet interior and cushy ride. But not sure if it’s worth 2x a fully loaded Santa Fe (after discounts).
