It’s great to be versatile because you might be in a situation where you can’t get your hands on a jig , ie if your out hunting on a trip somewhere , how ever at home a jig can make things just a bit easier to make what ever size string you want as well , I have one and I love it but Clays method is just as good and does the same thing at the end of the day. Jigs definitely have there place when needed. 👍
Clay, you just shortened the string making process by at least 3 fold. Your first step , like I use , is the best time saver , compared to using the jig process. Thanks for being who you are!!!

That was the first full explanation to sink in. I got it, thanks. I have made cordage from a variety of materials. No bowline though. I have a nice stand of hickory and Elm saplings. I am, with your inspiration, going to try my hand at green bow building. I make a lot of twisted canes and know how important it is to cure the poles before debarking. This will be good practice.
I really needed this. I've been working on a self-bow for myself, and I'm gonna be building some board-bows for my 5 and 3 yr old daughter, and not having commercially available strings for a 3 yr old with a 15" draw length has me wanting to pull my hair out, and then I figured, well, sh*t, I bet I could MAKE a string. Kay so after a dreadful two days of trying I was not only able to salvage the string from the first on that I thought was no good but turned around and made another, I truly was humbled by this experience, thankyou for this video, this knowledge will stay with me now, I had to break quite a few eggs, but I got two omelets out of it
Just made my first bow string by following this tutorial. It came out pretty well and works a charm! My work on the final weave after getting the length dialed in with the bowyer's knot leaves a bit to be desired, looking a little untidy, but the whole thing works fine and I'm very happy with my first attempt. Clay makes it look so easy, well let me tell you it's not that easy. He does explain the whole process very well, I just had to watch this video several times and do some trial-and-error attempts before I got it right. Well, at least I think I'm doing it correctly. Thank you for the information and for your excellent tutelage.
Watching this reminded me of one of those previous string making vids that you done, must be over a year ago now. In that instance you, like here, laid in the top loop and spliced in the lower one..except you applied the flemish twist over the entire length. Initially copied that example but adapted it to suit me. Although applying the flemish twist through the whole length uses more material and results in a heavier string, it offers a good robust string (I have one on one of my 55# bows made with B50 for a year now). The thing I do differently to you is that I use the conventional "rope splice" loops for both ends as I found it neater and easier to get the exact length..I then serve over the spliced area, just for belt and braces approach and it's tidy. When I made that string I used to use a wire clothes hanger bent around my door handle leading across the room to a small hobby vice on my desk!
Thanks Clay, I love it! This method takes out the headache of getting the reverse twist just right. I like to use one color for strings. So what I will do is color code the ends before weaving in the bottom loop. Not that its necessary but I over simplify things.
Keep up the good work, you simplify things that would be complicated with worse videography, your camera angles and lighting are great, you clearly explain what your doing effectively.

Hi Clay. I'm about to take some Rowan to make a stave with my son to make a simple selfbow and I had been thinking forward to stringmaking so this is really timely, thanks. Obviously there's craft and learning here but at least I understand all the steps involved in terms of weaving lines for integrity under extreme tension. I had wondered how this feat was achieved and I love the simple but effective tying innovations that have evolved to solve these problems. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome! I’m filing this away for down the road when I begin to make my own strings! I am hoping to one day get into self bows. I plan on cutting a few staves this spring and putting them up to season while I learn as much as I can with me factory made bow this year. Next year I hope to make my first bow. However I will attempt my first string this year. Thanks for the help and the inspiration.
The way you do this is so much more simple and practical than a lot of other methods I've seen here on TH-cam. A lot of them have a bunch of measuring and counting twists and just a bunch of extra stuff that made the process seem complicated to me. This video made it clear to me. Thanks for the great content!

Oh, and some arrows but I'll get to that later! I'm sure you'll have a chapter on that as well! Subscribed! (Once I got this one sorted out, I'll start on the 'yumi', the traditional Japanese bow they use for kyudo, Zen archery! It's almost 2 and a half meters long, with a short bottom limb and a long top limb. Made from laminated bamboo. Amazing what you can find on that flea market!)
