I know from personal experience that the braided fishing line works great. I had to make a new bow string for my 65lb Mongolian Horse bow. They don't carry those strings on the shelf. I used higher weight fishing line and discovered that I had to use thicker serving string. I also noticed that when shooting the bow is quieter. I made my string during the supply issues after covid. The fishing line was on the shelf at Bass Pro Shops.
It appeared that the paracord was just strung as is.(I could be wrong)
I feel a more accurate test would be to gut the paracord and use the inner strands to make a bow string.
🤣🤣🤣I just posted the same thing - although longwinded. 👍👍👍 Your short explanation is better.
Now I'm curious about this as that would make it even cheaper...
Ditto ❤ though you'd have to run it like the others in a Flemish twist.
"Will it string?" - nice video! How about testing other types of fishing line like monofilament etc?
Lol, i aim for pan fish, idk how long the string would last ya with 4 pound mono. Might not be worth it. Its going to streach bad.
Mono will stretch massively. I'd think even more than Paracord. Depending on the weight of the braided line it may be even more comparable to D-97.
@@MadRS pretty much nailed it on the head there.
Best braided fishing line - 40 lb and use 8 of them 10 ?
Hoping this continues, curious to see the viability of different string materials.
I got a bunch of braided spider wire 100% spectra fishing line out of a clearance bin for cheap and I've used that for bow strings for a long time. The spider wire has very little stretch and has increased my arrow speeds significantly. When I run out of this stuff I'll start getting d97 for my bows.
What's "d97", JW?
The bright yellow fishing line looks cool with that bow! Another idea for Will it Bow(string) is the strands from the fiberglass tape you used to back some bows a while ago. Great video and interesting as always!
I use that exact color of fishing line for my personal bow strings, it looks even cooler in the sun and in person. The camera doesn’t quite capture the color you see with your own eye.
I'm pretty excited that the TH-cam rabbit hole led me to this channel. I've learned a whole lot and I'm looking forward to getting into bow hunting again! Not to mention, this channel offers great tips, extensive info, and the video production quality and editing is top notch. Great work and thank you!
You're killing it man. I love your videos. The editing and music work so seamlessly. You're very passionate and it shows!
I make all my own Bow strings out of 90lb. test braided fishing line 14 strands, or 12 strands if I use 100lb. test. I love the stuff, and get it dirt cheap from WISH! Costs me about $4 a string. I make contious loop strings & will never buy a string!
Thanks for this video, I think more people are starting to see that braided fishing line is a great alternative to use in making great bow strings!
J’attends toujours avec impatience tes nouvelles vidéos.
Thanks!
This reminds me I wanted to ask what you thought about silk bowstrings, I believe ancient Mongolians used silk, but I could be mistaken
It's worth a try, some silk is pretty strong.
You could do that, problem is, you need really good premium silk. Most silk is weaker than other natural string materials like linen. So to make a more stable bow string, you need more material, which means more weight, which means less performance. Im sure the Mongolians knew what they were doing and had the best silk possible, but im not sure it would be cost effective now. Thats just my take though.
@@almubarizunarchery4607 just use spider silk, you won't be disappointed unless you live in 'stralia. 😏👌
This is the comment I was looking for! Ancient Mongolians also use to ride on unicorns and eat cotton candy, but I could be mistaken.
What if you use the strands in the core of the paracord and braid that?
This was my question. What if you just used the Paracord core as a source of nylon? Because the stretch in Paracord comes from the woven sheathing combined with not-particularly-tightly-twisted core material.
really want to see this test
The core strands are very slippery. I've tried using them for other projects and I found them difficult to work with. Doesn't mean it won't work; could just mean I lack the skill to use it.
I tried the Flemish twist with just the core strands with no wax. The loops held very well. I would love to see this done by a pro who knows what they're doing
@@DM-sq3jm sicky substance or wax as he mentioned would do the job. The tie tight and melt in place.
This is really cool. I love the shade of yellow on the fishing line.
When I was 11 I made my a bow that was just a straight springy stick and the string was a 3 piece braid of waxed floss.
I shot it a ton over the summer and eventually the bow gave out but the floss didn't.
I would like to see how well floss performs when a professional makes a string from it.
I did something similar, shaved the bark off of a sapling, braided I think ten strands of monofilament fishing line, but I used a green stick it split and I got scared to pull it back haha, it’s actually in my profile picture
Nice. I may go down to the river and do that. But instead work it down and try to get it to last awhile.
So I’ll have the Spring/ Bow.
Then get a second one that is shorter or longer? Not sure yet.
Do that crazy Double-Bow. And it should make it last longe r
Modern floss isn't the same, it's more of a waxy plastic sheet material, like a grocery bag pulled tight. It's not the same as the old stuff at all.
Love your stuff Kramer. Got me to upgrade my gear and I'm shooting 108 arrows a day during the week to get better....not getting better yet, but baby steps, right. Keep at it man. Love the channel.
Thanks so much! Could you send me an email with your address at support@shatterproofarchery.com ? I would like to send you some free gear. Keep up the great work!
Great Video! I did the same test with an endless loop string made of Dyneema fishing line and Fast Flight Plus. Both bowstring were equal in weight and the results came out quite the same. More stretch in fishing line and around 15 fps slower. BUT braided Dyneema fishing line makes great serving! It's like Halo serving but much cheaper and lasts the same. And it comes in serveral diameters, which makes proper nock fit easy.
Things with this channel just keep getting better.
Ha! I exclusively use that exact color and type of fishing line for my strings, it has pretty much the same physical properties as the bow string but I can go to the bass pro shop and buy a kilometer of the stuff and have it home within an hour.
I get my fishing line cheap from WISH I have more hits on my fishing line Bow string tutorial than any other video I have made of archery!
Bro, loved the video. The editing was flawless. I watched more for how bowstrings where made than anything. Keep up the awesome videos
I used polyester upholstery thread for a low-poundage set of bows for my kids. Ran it through beeswax and tied as a continuous flight bowstring and served with regular polyester thread.
I tried your method of making with a sinew waxed thread, I didn’t expect it to work so well
I settled on sinew a while back as it was the only thing that held up and plus its usually nice and pre-waxed
I used briaded spectra spider line at 60# test for a 55# recurve with amazing results in speed and accuracy. It was under $10 for 100 yards .
I liked the concept! The best part was watching you craft the strings, very relaxing to me! Keep up the great vids!!
I love your videos. My son (8) and I just started archery and we are having a blast.
My experience with paracord was the opposite of yours.
My tests showed no stretch at all. Leads me to wonder if different types have different properties. Keep up the good work,
Love your videos
indeed different paracord do have different properties ! depending what they are meant foro , that's why when you go buy paracord there is usually like 10 different spools , its not JUST diametre of the cord
Couple weeks late but the difference is real paracord is nylon. Nylon stretches quite a bit. It also comes in polyester which has almost no stretch. Nylon is better in almost every way except for price and if you want it to not stretch. The box store stuff is often polyester.
Have you thought about taking the strands out of the paracord and twisting it together that way?
^yes, please. I think we're all really curious to see how a Flemish twist will change the performance of the cord core, here's hoping it reduces the stretch.
If you're using good quality paracord, the inner strands are already twisted together.
Great video. I would be interested in seeing a video on the proper placement of arrow knocks on the string and you assessment of aiming methods. I tend to find string walking easier but as far as I can see you use natural aiming. What are the pros and cons?
I have used pre-waxed bank line for a string. Never new the proper braid until I come across you videos. The bank line worked great with a normal triple braid and wind for arrow knock area. Still going strong about 6 years later.
Ah. Mystery solved. I ordered a spool of "Dyneema bowstring material" from our local Amazon equivalent - it was cheap Chinese-made no brand stuff. I wasn't really planning to make bowstrings, I thought I'd be able to find a use for it for my other hobbies. What came was WAY TOO THIN for what I thought bowstring looked like - the cord diameter is about 0.5mm more or less. My answer came at 2:17. Looks like making actual bowstrings is complicated and would requires a number of fixtures and jigs. Who knows - I'm now seeing a bunch of ads for bows and arrows on the app, maybe this might be the start of something.
Thanks for sharing your experiments on different type of string..
Best regards from Malaysia
I had an idea for a "Will it Bow" episode. What if you took a bunch of plastic bottles and then melted them down. After melting them put the molten plastic into a mold and let it cool. Cut and Sand the plastic then glue to some type of hard wood to make a bow. I thought it would be cool to see if this idea works because you could add all kinds of cool designs into the molten plastic with different colors. Also if you wanted to you could add some small led lights into the mold before pouring the plastic into it for bow fishing or if you stay out to late and don't have a flashlight. Would have to implement a battery pack with a button or switch into the handle piece of the bow for that idea to work. Hope you like this idea, please let me know!
...'you could add some small led lights into the mold' -LEDs make everything better :-)
Love the idea! I will put it on the list
@@kramerammonsarchery Glad you like the idea if you need any help with the circuit, electrical engineering systems is my field of study.
I had a plastic bow from aliexpress with a material „p66“, all molten. It‘s very flexible but has barely any power, too little compression power. I would expect similar results for pur PET. But it could be laminated with something harder-it‘s just difficult to find a powerful glue for PET. Epoxy might have a chance. I thought for the compressionlayer to use crushed ceramic powder in epoxy
I wondered about this years ago, but have never tied my own. Guess it's a good time to learn.
Been watching for quite some time, loving the content, and waiting for more videos! Thank you Kramer for the wonderful content!
This video was a long time ago but I'm currently begining in the "archery world" and I now I think I'm your biggest fan. I love all your content. Maybe you'll see this coment, maybe not but if so, don't stop doing this content. I hope one day I can purchase and try one of your bows. ¡¡Best regards from Colombia!!
P.S: I'll definitively will buy your glove, it look amazing!
Who would have tought that?!? Thanks for the research Karmer, good Job!
Oh my soul I've missed your videos, my goodness I'm happy to see you again😂
Now you got me wanting to try your D-97 string!
wow great experiments I am a carpenter and I use what I had to make my Krammer inspired longbow and I used a string we call Jet line "used for straight-line building materials" so far so good but I have nothing to compare it to so I think its ok.
I have made some strings out of 80 pound drapery cord, and served the loops and Arrow Nock, worked pretty good as long as you pre stretched the cord ,all on elm self bows
my favorite alternative bow string material is spectra speargun cord. Just make it about an inch and a half shorter than you need it to be, tie two bowyer's knots on each end, then string your bow. It'll stretch to the correct length. You can control the brace height by adjustinng the loops. It's basically a braided spectra string
I use upolstery thread to make continuous loop strings. I treat the loom as a race track n do ONE FULL LAP for every pound of draw weight. One 1500 yard spool can get me 5-8 strings (depending on if mishaps happen) for my 56 inch 40 pound recurve. Plus the 1500 yard spool only cost less than $10 for two depending on where you get it from.
Love the content, gained a ton of knowledge in the last few days.
Traditional archery!! Love all your videos bro!!
Cool Video, you answered some questions I didn't even know I had!
Thank for answering my fishing line question.
Sir you just added to my emergency bag for hunting trips. Would have never thought of fishing line.
I spliced abowstring from dyneema zingit that flings rivercane arrows with much umph. I even spliced a piece in to thicken up the line for the ‘serving’ where the arrow seats, works great, very durable.
Just got my shatterproof archery quiver today and it's awesome. The craftsmanship is superb im super excited. Thanks again man!!!
Thanks so much! Enjoy!
Fantastic video content K! Keep it Going!👍
You can order like 500m off the braided fishing line off aliexpress for $15
Thanks for the vid I was trying to think of new way to better my bows
This is a good subject I honestly wondered this myself!
Would love some shatterproof gear!
I've used 12 strand flat braid before. Worked like a charm 👍🏼
Great video. You have given inspiration to make my own bow. Thanks
Put one of Kramers strings on my Oneida...excellent quality! I shoot it with bare fingers @ 70lbs with no pain or pinching at all...great company!
I am so glad you like it! Thank you so much!
Love your work bro.. started making my own bows from your inspirational videos🙂 made me curious to test what common trees in Africa will bow. Having lots of fun and frustration. 😅
Did anyone even notice the typo on the two parts where it says "Fishing lime"
at 6:45 I don't know about you, but if I can use limes to fish count me in, lime for fishing, beer and apparently archery lol
Great video!! I always wanted to know if these materials would work! Excellent job!
I would like to see some bow string experiments like:
Can you use a Piano string or any musical instrument string as a bow string?
Violins have a bows and these bows have strings too but made out of horse hair. So can you use a Violins bow's string as a bow string? (bow string made out of horse hair)
Just pressing on musical string is often enough to hurt fingers. I'd imagine itd be very painful
@@jasontoney4476 if you're playing a stringed instrument for a while it becomes almost painless. 😆
@@christiane-latte yeah, but that's still not as much stress as pulling a bowstring
Piano 'string' is actually wire and would be too stiff. I've tried most things but not the genuine cat-gut used for 'real' violin stings, etc. that might work. The cheaper violin/guitar strings are on the stiff side. I kind of recall reading that the Mongols or maybe Tartars used long horse tail hair for their strings.
@@timbayliss7720 I recently heard somewhere that the mongols used silk, but I've also heard horse tail hair so idk what to believe
Im new to archery just bought some cheap gear to start out with and excited to see where i end up someday
You always have great information. Thank You
Great vid as always, I love your breakdowns
I’m sure most string-like materials would be viable as bowstring material, probably not as good as the dedicated stuff but it should work.
I've made bow strings (Flemish and endless) from just about every type of thin thread, just to see how they work, and found the following. Anything nylon is a waste of time for anything other than the very lightest of bows, it stretches too much, this includes mono fishing line which is also stiff. Linen is really good if you can get it! Cotton not very strong. See what Kramer says about braided but I do use it for finger serving.
Great for going fishing for the big ones. Great for tight lining for catfish.
I found this video searching for something I maybe had laying around at home, or that I could pick up at the local wal-mart to use as bowstring material for some hollow limb kid's bows I'm making for my grandkids. Obviously I want something safe and cheap (they're going to be HARD on these bows, I'm sure...being aged 3 to 6)...but real performance would be nice.
I can't say I'm any closer to finding what I'm looking for, but I enjoy your videos anyway so no loss here, lol. Thanks for doing the test and sharing your results!
So...2wks of research and I've found that there's a billion kinds of fishing line that you could have used. The general consensus seems to be that Power Pro is the best. I'm curious what would have happened had you used the name brand in a similar strength (say 80lb test), vs an off brand 40lb line.
Oh, they make it in camo too lol. Pretty cool.
Another great video, thanks Kramer
Crazy cool! Nice experiment.
'm gonna guess bow string works best, to include braided Dacron, Dynema, and other "super braid" "fishing line" of course, which are already used for bow strings, anyway. No difference in the Dacron or Dynema used for bow trings or fishing lines. Nylon Monofiliment fishing line would stretch too much. Parcord is a bit large in diameter for modern bows
Not all fishing lines are the same, like I prefer to use Spyder wire fishing line but they have several different types of lines from soft and flexible to very rigid lines for deep trolling, and I've entertained the thought of using the Spyder wire fishing line to make a new compound bow string, as the one I have is many years old and almost never used, so with that said thank you for the video I did find it very interesting and informative
Right at the beginning I was thinking "you need to be trying braid, not mono or fluoro," but you were def ahead of me. I'm impressed the 9# braid somewhat paralleled d97 - I thought it would be too light. I wonder if a higher weight braid would end up matching the d97 in every category - would make sense if actually same material. Also, your approach did, in fact, have a decent scientific approach to it - kudos!
Lots of people use Power Pro or Spiderwire braid for their strings. The general consensus from what I've seen is 60-80lb test is the best choice. Cool thing is it IS less expensive in general...mostly because it goes on sale a lot more often at places like Wal Mart (every season), plus...well, you can get it any day of the week in tons of colors at places like Wal Mart lol.
I would like to see the inner strands of the paracord made into a bow string
I know this is an old video, but for the paracord a better test might be to pull out the inner strands and use those to make a bow string, either discarding the outer shell or testing that separately.
First off, I just received my first Shatterproof bow strings. I haven't shot an arrow from either yet, but they look amazing! This weekend I am building a PVC pipe bow with my 6yo nephew and I will put your string through its paces (two separate events, he's not getting his little hands on my brand new bow string).
In any case! I don't think the comparison with paracord is fair because the other two are specifically made to not stretch under tension, where paracord is not. I think the real question is: can you make a functional bow string from a length of paracord? Instead of: does a length of paracord, fresh off the spool, work as a functional string?
I would suggest using the mill spec stuff (maybe you already are). Just because for once mill spec is actually much better than the regular variety. Just ditch the mantle (sheath or whatever that's called in English) and use the strands inside:
Use a three strand braid on the paracord strands (the fishing line comes braided and as such has a considerable head start) and then you make a 16 or 20 strand bowstring out of those three strand braids (still with me here?), that's when I think the comparison starts to be fair.
You still need less feet with the paracord version vs the fishing line from a "initial feet off the spool" perspective and though it is a lot more work, it still represents a cheap option people can do at home.
Also, how would a string (choose your poison) behave if you braid the entire bow string, rather than twisting it?
So many questions! So little time to make videos! ;-)
I'm actually very interested in this, I've been wondering on this particular subject for awhile now. But the only difference is I also included regular braided nylon. Didn't really have a way to accurately test these tho.
I want more material like this my guy.
I am going to try 3mm OD, 12 strand braided D97 (sailing) rope on my crossbow (as it has high strength & excellent wear characteristics, not an issue with bows). But the spliced nock loop method means there is no need for wrapping or a centre (I'm British so no 'center' here!) serving. It's supposedly lighter than a normal xbow string. Would that work on a normal bow?!
That is honestly really surprising. I bet with a higher pound test fishing line you could get faster results. I know some of the 80 and 100# stuff I have is ridiculously strong!
Next I want to see if you can make floss work. I think we can assume it won’t but it would be interesting to see if you can make it happen.
I've been using synthetic sinew with some pretty satisfactory results. You gotta be careful tho, some types are pretty weak.
Would you ever consider shooting Olympic style recurve?
Nice. Is the fishing line more resilient to moisture?
Peace, can not wait to see your next videos, just discovered your site.
Comment added for the drawing. Love the idea of testing handy materials for the bowstring, I'm mulling over ideas on an afternoon with my 7 year old grandson and how he and I can together make a "kids" bow and make a few arrows from stuff I already have, or reliably find on the shelf in any hardware store, and be ready to try it out the same afternoon. It has to be a really low draw weight for the little one, AND flu flu type short range arrows, injury reducing tips, I don't want him to be able to accidentally put one through the neighbor's window. Kramer any ideas? perhaps make a video about this?
I know im late to the party, but i just used some artificial sinew (polyester) i found on amazon that said it was 70 lb test. I found 7 ribbons made the perfect diameter for my nocks (after serving) and them being waxed made making flemish twist bowstrings alot easier. I have one on my 45 lb sinoart 58" recurve and another on my american archery fox 55lb compound bow, and so far so good with no stretch or frays ^^
Guess a long winded way of saying id love to see how polyester artificial sinew stacks up too!
Paracord has thinner strings in the a sleave. It is not in a flemish twist either, I would like to see if a it changes if you removed the strings and gave is a flemish twist.... Maybe a hybrid of two or even tree different material.
I've made a Flemish Twist bow string from the internal strands of paracord. They are still nylon, so it is still more stretchy, thus slower than my proper Dacron string. It would work fairly well in a pinch, but not really worth it, even in a survival situation you're better off spending the energy on proper shelter, warmth and foraging etc.
I love your videos and tutorials they are very helpfull!!
With the 550 cord, pulling the core strings out, wetting the hull & then thinning it out might take some of the stretch out. To "thin it", hold one end & twist it while drawing it between something, like pinched fingers (that can be done while pulling out the core strings).
Also. . . Dental floss. . . It's pre-waxed, at least, haha!
I never would have guessed that fishing line would perform so well
Have you ever thought about using #36 bankline for a bow string ? I'm a beginner at bow making and was just wondering if it would make a good string. I live in Conway Arkansas and understand that you are from Arkansas too.
On the paracord take out the center strings and discard the outer layer. It will work better
I enjoy your videos, and they make me think, "what if I tried to make bows?". Really good content.
Before I watch this vid , my moneys on the dynaflight . & there’s also kite surfing string that DYNEEMA & I found it on Amazon with a 3/8s or less diameter rated at 1000 pounds . You can get it in any color & it gos down to smaller diameters too & up in poundage also . This stuff is tough .
I think paracord might make a better string of you gut it and braid it. The inside strands of paracord are not braided. This might be intentional as it may be the stretch is needed as a "shock absorber" when opening your chute. Fishing line is excellent under tension, but if give it a snap under slack and it breaks way easier. Just a thought.
I agree. I think it should be possible to clamp one end of the paracord and twist the interior fibres. Great video.
Cool video but only one thing you should have had the fishing line the same wait as the bow string as you would have problem found the speeds would have been much closer.
Great video as always, I can’t get d97 locally so maybe I should look through the fishing section next time
Cool vid you answered my question . Thank you .
Will it bow fishing pole!
I think the only significant difference betwean the fishing line and the bowstring material is that fishing line is typicaly coated with teflon or something similar. If you think about it a fishingline and a bowstring have some very similar requirements so you would expect them to be made from the same type of material.
Awesome information Thank you
I have used polypropylene paracord instead of nylon paracord. It stretches much less even though it isn't quite as strong.
