Although I am a novice in all things archery, people ask me many questions. Jasper asked if I could show him how to make a bowstring. So I demonstrate the simplest method I know - a single loop Flemish twist. I use Dacron B (Amazon link below) to make my two-ply 16 strand bowstring to be fitted to an 86lb triple laminate longbow (with a bowyer's knot plus a stopper knot to avoid it slipping). I like to make my strings so that I can use them as tillering strings or use them on bows of similar weights and lengths so I make it a generous length cutting the strands 20 inches longer than the nock to nock length of the bow. I use a bowyer's knot to secure the string to one of the knocks, the loop sliding up the bow limb and slid over the other knock when braced. I complete the string and brace the bow, allowing the string stretch before serving. I do not serve the string - but if anyone would like me to demonstrate serving a bowstring then please leave a comment to that effect.
Typical bundle sizes for different bow weights when using Dacron B50.
20-30# - 8 strand
25-35# - 10 strand
35-45# - 12 strand
45-55# - 14 strand
55-80# - 16 strand
I demonstrate a very simple single loop Flemish twist that needs no jig; it has two-ply loop at one end, a twisted tail and the body of the string is simply waxed and twisted . But it is possible to refine this string by adding a second loop which is preferred for bows above 70/80lbs - Dacron is a slippy material and the bowyer's knot will slip on heavy bows - hence making a second loop which is more secure than a bowyer's knot. The loop ends can be tapered by using a jig that enables the strands in each bundle to be cut at different lengths giving a nice, even taper on the tail of the loop(s).

Hello! Yes, perfectly possible to make a good string without a jig. Of course a jig makes the taper from the loop very neat and even and if you want a double-looped string a jig definitely makes that task more straightforward. But if you are happy with a single loop, then making a string entirely in your hands is a good skill to have. Thanks for watching. Mick

And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.
So modest. Makes some of the best looking longbows and strings.

My bow is 5 foot from notch to notch so 5 foot is 60 inches and you’re supposed to add 20 inches so do I set my nails I’m going to use make my strands at 80 inches?

But seriously...I am finishing up a Meare Heath-style bow of hickory, and I have some Irish linen thread that I'll be using for a string. i will say this for you, your video production quality, on screen mannerisms, and articulation of information is at the very top standard for a you tube vid. Key information delivered without ums and ahs or stutters, and short and sweet sentences explaining what needs to be explained without deviating, slow demos, but fast enough to not get bored and slow enough to take in what your teaching, good positioning and lighting on all angles and some well placed transitions, that personal touch at the start of the video about documenting your fumbles as a novice was humbling, and of course, the finished product comes together perfectly at the end with a clear demo of the results, awesome.

Thanks for the video Mick, very informative. I have been a traditional bow hunter on and off up till about 10 years ago, where I strictly started traditional only. I am 50 now and wanted to take hunting to a new level. I just cut my first trees to let dry to try to make my first long bow. I have been researching everything I could to try to get the proper knowledge to take on this task. The string was my biggest concern. Your video has put my nerves at ease. Thanks Mick. I just finished my first flemish twist loop. Now that I can make one, I can teach others to as well. My shagbark hickory flat bow will have a proper string within the next couple hours. I'm not using dacron B-50. I'm using 20 lb. hemp twine. It's strong, cheap and readily available at Walmart.

@@MickGrewcock Thanks, brother. Now that it's strung up with a proper brace height, I can see that it needs a little tillering. One step at a time. Rome wasn't built in a day.
@@williammanning3174 Go steady William. Getting the tiller right when at brace height is key to success as you bend it further. Getting to brace is a significant milestone on the way to full draw. A braced bow that looks right has every chance of being successful; continuing to bend the bow after brace height but with problems visible is asking for trouble. So, as you say, Rome wasn't built in a day.
@@MickGrewcock Steady as she goes, Captain. I'm gently scraping away with my razor sharp knife. The 20 lb. hemp twine string worked great til my razor sharp knife touched it. Then it went "BOING" and the end with the flemish loop flew halfway across the garage! As such...I'm performing the tillering with some paracord. It will get there eventually. I cut that nice shagbark hickory tree down and I want it to have a new purpose. It was just standing there, stripping the carbon atoms from CO2 molecules....exhaling O2 molecules....it would be absolutely criminal to not make something beautiful from the wood it provided.

A serving tutorial would be awesome! Do you make yours by hand or do you use a serving tool? I've seen several tutorials on how to use the tool, but not how to do it by hand.

Had a tree fall in my back yard and a piece cut to make it easier to move was a perfect shape to make a short bow from so I am in the process of doing that! It’s going to purposely be pretty crude and rustic looking and it’s pretty small, more built to be used on horseback!
