One of the CRAZIEST Bows I've ever built! Mollegabet Self Bow

  • This week we're breaking out a little woodworking skill in one of the craziest bows I've ever built. The Mollegabet bow originated in Europe and features narrow limb tips supported by a deeper limb cross section. The deep narrow sections act as levers similar to the siyahs on Asiatic bows. It's a very unique primitive bow design which allows you to do all sorts of interesting things with the static limb tips. For this self bow, I'm doing a little wood carving to create snakes on the belly side of the bow. I had no idea how the carvings would turn out but I was presently surprised. Overall this wooden bow shoots pretty well although the longer limbs to add a little more hand shock than I'm used to.
I get a lot of requests for more detailed bow building videos vs the ASMR style I've been posting recently. Check out the link below for a more detailed version. I'm also giving this bow away over on my Patreon site (to a patreon member) so if you want more details, head over to the link below to check it out.

Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

Beautiful from tip to tip, I would love to win this work of art. Don't know if I would shoot it though, I have a 32"draw length. What is the length and draw weight of this bow?

I love the way you cut down mass on the levers, the snake design is impressive to say the least. lever tips are tricky like that, because you don’t want them to bend but at the same time you don’t want so much mass that it slows the bow down. I made that mistake about 1000 times before I realized what was happening haha. You just went above and beyond with this one.

I have always strongly disliked the design of mollegabet, until now! Wow clay! I LOVE THIS!! bravo! I just found out you were on alone, followed you for a year, used your board bow tutorial to start my bowyers journey, and now I have made 6 successful bows, any more to come. Yours were the first videos that inspired me

Also, we live a little over an hour away from 3Rivers Archery in Ashley, IN. To be in there in person, observing their inventory up close, can be overwhelming in terms of Bow Building options (which is a good thing). While it may not be the cheapest route for a personal build, you certainly get what you pay for in terms of quality. Small world.

    Hello Clay.
I love your videos, both your bow making ones, your hunting videos and your field tips etc.
I’m from Denmark, and the bow you’re making is an ancient, Danish stone age bow found at a place called Møllegabet near the island of Funen (Fyn).
It’s C14 dated to be from approximately 5,100-5,200 BC, so an old one ;)
The pronunciation, however hard for an English speaking person, would be something like “MOlle-GA-bet” with emphasis on the 1st and 3rd syllables :) the Ø is pronounced much like Google Translate pronounces the German Ö and a little like you would pronounce the “mer” in merge or the “mur” in murmur :)
    Hope that helps :)
And I hope you have a great Elk Camp this year. I’m looking forward to the video :D

Oh, and if you haven’t already made them or seen them, check out the Holmegaard bows. Being from around 7,000 BC, they’re the oldest bows ever unearthed and were found in the Holmegaard Bog just outside the town where I grew up :)

When fire hardening bows, I find that it helps to ensure that the outer limbs/tips get the same degree of treatment as the rest of the bow. It makes them lighter outright, but it also makes them stiffer; you can thin or narrow them even more to reduce mass and increase arrow speed. Just something I've been trying, adds about 4-5fps. Enough to be worth another 2$ of coals the ends of the pit, eh?
