"If it's not looking the way you want it to, it's not you, it's your paper." THANK YOU!!!! I'm using Canson paper and find it dries SO fast, I can't do nice looking skies, it just dries before I'm done putting my colours in! I was so frustrated and thought landscapes were not for me. I'll try and find "affordable-ish" Arches paper for painting landscapes and keep my Canson paper for flowers! Thanks for your videos!! 🙏🏻

The Canson makes it look flat.......the arches just makes a simple painting pop... now I know why no matter what I do my paintings don’t look right.... I have always used the same paints as you plus Holbein for colours I could not find...
Thanks so much for making my life easier..... As I really was going to give up....

I would like to add that I have watched reviews of watercolor paper. Not one of them helped me the way this has. Every single thing you said is exactly what I experienced. The paper drying too quickly is the biggest problem. I tried using more water. That make it worse because the water pools on top and depending on the brand of paper the sizing lifts. If I work on smaller sizes it is a bit easier. By working hard and learning to compensate I made progress. Now I know it doesn't have to be so hard.

I started painting 3 months ago and am subscribed to 30 or 40 watercolor accounts, but they all fast-forward through the tutorials and my painting doesn't look like theirs. Or they'll mention briefly that cheaper paper and paints will have different results but don't explain how. This is the first video that explained blooms and how I can avoid them and how to work with cheaper paper and I am so glad I found your channel!

Hey Nicole Expensive materials are not always good but the right material does play a role in a painting, I paint on 100% cotton handmade paper with ordinary brushes and ordinary paints. I have used Canson I have used Lana I have used Arches but I get the same or better result on my handmade paper too and I don't own escoda or expensive brushes and I am a self taught artist. Yes you do need a mop brush for watercolor and a few round flat and a liner and a lager flat for washes that's about it, It is all about controlling your water on different kinds of paper, I have no fancy for brands and stuff, hope this helps #artistsatwork53

To all or any of the newbies here I just want to say if you are here to learn how to paint in watercolor Emma is Your girl she is a Great teacher and really takes the time to put out videos that are easy to learn. like she says about the paper it took me awhile as well. but just know that your in good hands because of her i really have stuck with it and have had so much fun painting and learning and have gotten to the point where i cant wait to watch her new videos because i know that i can do it now and thats the best part of it... is being able to paint
& feeling good about it . that just says a lot about her method of teaching . the stuff they make the paper with is called sizing but just like she is telling you about the paper( and other materials she talks about in her other videos) it may not be you it could be the paper once i switched over i finally figured out she was right all along . and as far as the other paper goes and as you grow in learning water color painting you will be able to decide what paper works for you. as Bob Ross always said Happy painting!

@Joyce Snodgrass growing up my father always called me Mr Snodgrass and I would go bonkers laughing like..., well a silly child. Why that made me laugh so much well it's a funny sounding name truth be told. Do not take this the wrong way it was all innocent youth. My father is from England so I can only gas that that name is also. My last name is Franck. Doesn't sound alot funny until you start thinking you're a big green monster and then you realize that the doctor's name was Frankenstein not the monster at which point you embrace the name and everybody leaves you alone.

I use Canson and Bee.. I do have two tablets of Arches but I'm scared to use them.. Yes they were gifts from my son but still I don't want to waste it on something that I can't paint. I am still learning.. I love the two comparisons and yes I can see the differences. Thanks for showing.. Also for newbies having them remove the tape by pulling at an angle away from the painting is less likely to tear the paper.. Thanks

LPT (life pro tip): I'm new to watercolors too and had a sorta 'wide selection' as a "covid furloughed girl since March 2020" exquisite gift package. I started on the Canson and a Swathmore (literally 3 weeks so I'm not too well-versed yet) but break in the Arches! Seriously! You learn to work with both, but the Arches if FAR more forgiving if you're using lots of water. You can set it down and go back in a day or two and do "thirsty brush" to "erase" most of the non-staining paints.
I like using several kinds. I even have that moleskin watercolor. You learn on the cheaper papers (basically, no cotton) how to "fake a layer look" which quite honestly is what I do with (don't you dare laugh!) 😂 my "faux" Copperplate calligraphy! (Now I won't use the super-expensive inks until I'm more accomplished because that IS a waste, and MESSY!) But I'm using tombows and having fun. Sometimes I laugh at my work "fun". But I found that some people really liked it and wanted to take my work off their hands! 😥 And I found I grew attached. This woman here had a "duck" I just did, and I had different paints (DS, Sennelier, some other kind) and I worked SO HARD on Duck that I started calling him "duck" and (covid time is lonely and I'm a "people person" so allow me that attachment to "duck")... and my friends WANTED it. One was babysitting a year old baby and the baby ran, and came back with a squeaky TOY DUCK! And now I'm keeping DUCK 😂 and Duck was on one of the "mid-range" papers. _Possibly on the back side_ cause I haven't yet figured out cold-pressed from hot-pressed and all that.
But really, please, dive in and use your arches. I didn't know price differences all that much, but really the arches pads go a LONG way if you mask it off. (My sister knew I needed a hobby; God blessed me with a wonderfully generous sister who loves art.) And don't be scared to "cheat", like whip out the white pen and fix something right on up! 🤗

      @talia6229 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I get it, I was holding off using better quality paper because I thought my talent didn't deserve it. But I was told by someone last year - "just do it!" And it honestly has made painting more successful and enjoyable. I still use the cheaper stuff for swatching/colour charts so not wasted. I think if you can make your way through a pad of cheaper paper, you've stuck to the practice and deserve to whip out the Arches! 💖

I would like to echo what Wilma Taranda has written down. I am new and very discouraged of my watercolouring skills. I leave messages for them to tell me what paper they are using, cotton rag or cellulose. They do not respond. But as I watch you do both paintings and the need for them to dry and how much work you need to work with cellulose which is not a bad thing now that I watch your video. I have purchased more expensive watercolour but have not used it until MY skills get better. I now know it's not me it's my paper. Thank You for sharing this tutorial and the difference of Rag Cotton and Cellulose. God Bless and have a great career

Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial and I ordered your brushes and I can hardly wait to get them

I absolutely love your water coloring tutorials. I'm teaching myself during quarantine and have to say I'm getting pretty good, for a novice! Your comments regarding paper are critical for success. I've been using cheap Premiere by Nicole and it warps and pills terribly. I bought some of your recommended expensive paper but don't want to use it until I'm more confident. Maybe Canson is better than Nicole, I hope so for others just starting out. Also, I found that I mostly use my 3 primary colors of Windsor and Newton in the tube. Amazing how many colors you can mix from just that three. I also have a 36 pan and a 14 pan of metallic but, if I had known then what I know now, I would have saved my money. I would still buy the metallic as they are simply gorgeous. Thank you so much for your tutelage.

You do such a nice job of compensating for the Canson paper's shortcomings for landscapes, but I do love the blends you get with the Arches. I've been using a Windor and Newton spiral bound pad lately and love it, even more than Arches. It took me a few videos, but I'm really liking the new wood desk too.

Hi there Emma, thanks for a great beginner tutorial as always. I have been painting regularly in watercolours for nearly a year now so although still very much a beginner I have learned a lot already by watching tutorials such as this one and painting most days, trying out different techniques and materials as I go. As you mentioned in your video I have found that the quality of paper can make a massive difference to the quality of your result. I too started using cheap paper and wondered why I couldn’t get the pigments to disperse and blend properly. It was very frustrating to begin with and I had assumed it was me doing it all wrong. I have since purchased Arches and can confirm the difference is phenomenal, however so is the price tag unfortunately. I just wanted to suggest that as an in between quality paper I now use Bockingford as my go-to watercolour paper. Although it is not 100% cotton I find the quality to be very good and is streets ahead of Canson etc. At roughly half the price of Arches I thought it might be a good place to start as I know things are difficult enough for a beginner without crappy paper making it worse. Just a wee suggestion for anyone reading this who is feeling stuck in a rut with their paper 😊xx

I use the cheaper paper for a lot of my beginner work, but certain tutorials seem to turn out so much better on 100% cotton! I've been stretching my cotton paper by cutting it in half or quarters (and even doing some 3"x3" projects). Next I'm going to try some store brand 100% cotton sheets and see if it might be a nice in-between because even as a beginner, I notice such a difference on the Arches!

Thank you for a wonderful tutorial! This is my first water colour painting and I’m pretty happy with it, loads more to learn and master. Omg, I didn’t realise how difficult trees are 😬 If only I could add a photo

thank u so much. This beginner has a touch of confidence . I need to get the paints now. I have watercolour pencils, Canson paper and a ton of brushes from somewhere. Now I know what kinds of paints to purchase.

Thank you for using both Arches and Canson. Seeing the process on each quality of paper was really appreciated

🧑🏻‍🎨Quick tip....when pulling the tape off from around your painting, pull the tape away from the painting slowly.
This should prevent tearing into the painting. 😊

Thanks for this video! I have been struggling with my paintings not looking the way I think they should and have finally decided to make the leap and buy some more expensive paper. Seeing then side by side really shows the difference paper can make!

I’ve been trying out different brands of paper and switching from Canson to 100% cotton was a big challenge. The water and paint move differently. I appreciate the techniques you can achieve on arches (I think it’s my favorite now) but i still like using Canson for fun/practice. Love this video showing both papers.

Lovely! I admit I'm "adjusting" halfway through because I "saw" Golan Heights over Sea of Galilee around 16:00 and instead of sticking in foreground mountains, I kept the "lake" 😇🤦‍♀️ and ...LOVELY! Was like a religious experience! I'm quite fond of watercolors now (3 weeks or so after my "Christmas blessings" of "here's a lot of watercolor stuff for covid-furloughed girl") and LOVING it! ❤️️😊 I suck at flowers because I don't know flowers that well (I'm learning from you!), but I did your duck, and I'm KEEPING Duck. I'm going to figure out how one mats and frames these - a few friends wanted me to give them Duck! I'm attached so I'm keeping it to hang up somewhere. If I can have fun and paint your duck, everyone should take a break and just try this one. *Adorbs!* Emma's Duck from last year: th-cam.com/video/Umz2vUqPGiE/w-d-xo.html

Wow!! Great tutorial. I am new to water color and love it. I have been struggling all the things you pointed out on the cheaper paper. I thought it was me. Now I know it is the paper. This is a great help to me. I have a lot of the cheap paper and will continue to use it as a novice. Going forward I now know it is worth investing in the better paper for final versions.

I use canson alot for practice and arches if I feel I have it down. I just keep buying arches for stock piling whenever I order supplies.
