- In this video we show how to change out a deck belt on a Craftsman DYT4000 with a 42” deck. This will also work for Husqvarna and similar tractors with the same decks from the mid 2000’s era.

Thankyou for your help . Really appreciate that. I found out by mistake, after ya get everything back togather wrap clutch pully first, then you pull the right side pully it moves as you pull and it’s waay easier. Just to let ya know for next time 😊 If your driving it’s the pully that is by right foot. That one should be last. You saved me a lot of money Jason ! Thanks again😊

This video popped up while scrolling. I’ve been trying to get my neighbor to buy a wheel horse! You can have the deck on and off in 5 minutes without tools. But he keeps bringing me craftsman’s! Last one he brought me I undid the front so just the front flopped down. I think that was on his cub cadet. Another thing I’ve noticed is the brakes that stop the pulleys on his are shot and it allows the belt to loosen more than normal. The result is sometimes the belt hops off if you disengage it quickly.
This is the first Craftsman I’ve owned. My dad gave it to me in January this year. It was basically wasted. The engine was in bad shape because the cam decompression piece came off and made the engine stop abruptly. According to my dad he bought it from a guy for $500 in great condition. He used it to brush hog his property in north FL, 5 acres of tall weeds, grass and brush. He said it was doing pretty good but shut down and backfired one good time. It would not restart and he just parked it. Anyway I went through it and replaced the cam. Cleaned all the pieces out of the motor. One of the caps that sits on the valve stem where the rocker arm pushes had come off and was in the crank case too. I guess when the engine jammed up the valve probably did some weird thing and that happened. I could see the marks and dents inside the crank case where the pieces had jammed up between the case and cam gear. It’s a wonder the case didn’t crack. Anyway besides the motor, the deck was missing a couple pins and one of the lift rods for the deck was broken. That was about 3/8” steel rod too. The blades under the deck are supposed to be 20” I think. Each one was maybe 12” long at best, twisted up and just wore off. Dad said he may have hit a few stumps. I went through everything, got all the missing parts from eBay. Oh yeah, the muffler had blown apart I guess from that one last “good backfire” 😅. I opened it up, re welded the baffles in and welded it all back up again. It got a new starter too. Once I was done with it the thing was basically a new tractor again. I wish I’d have filmed it but I hadn’t started making TH-cam videos yet. I think I did a couple shorts of my 5 year old son with a magnet finding the broken pieces in the block. But yeah that’s how I did it with this tractor. It’s easier to remove the deck completely and replace the belt for me than try to lay on the ground. I haven’t had any problems with the spindles yet and it hasn’t thrown a belt. My son just didn’t listen when I told him to clean all the debris off the deck every time he mows. I think a stick got in between the belt and pulley that’s why it shredded.
@@Tennesseemountainhomestead Those newer Briggs engines are known for cam issues. That’s quite a rescue! It’s kinda funny how something can look so good and be so beat up!
I bet you your spring was above the belt and while it running and the blades going the belt was rubbing on the spring it happened to me on my gray mower before i put in a longer bolt with two nuts on it just to help keep the spring in place on the engagement pulley.
So that just reminded me im gonna have to setup this 38 inch old deck like that or I'll have that problem again if i don't
I like those ones engines their easy to work on then once set right and kept clean after using they last for years

You're missing the idler return spring, part number 169022. Pulls opposite the tensioner spring. That said, mine was missing BOTH those springs and still worked, amazingly...
Thanks! My dad gave us this mower in pretty rough shape over a year ago. I did a bunch of work to it and had to replace missing/ broken parts I found on eBay. I didn’t know there was a spring missing, but I’ll definitely check it out! Thanks again!
