- Kitefoiler J.J. Rice-an aspiring Olympic athlete for the nation of Tonga-has died in a free diving accident on June 15. His sister Lily Rice shared a few words on Facebook about her brother, “the last time I saw him he gave me a big hug and I wish I would’ve held on for longer.”

Another free diving tragedy. If we were meant to be under water without air, we wouldn't have/need scuba tanks.😢

Was he alone? If it was a shallow water blackout, was there not a spotter to get him to safety? Such an incredibly dangerous sport 😢😢
@@sargassum6190no, there were others with acting as his spotters. He was so prolific at free diving that it took a few minutes to realize he hadn't surfaced.
He was on the bottom, about 90-100 feet. A normal depth for him. But even though he was located almost immediately it took time to reach him and then to bring him to the surface.
At least one in the boat with JJ was a rescue diver. I'm familiar with this young man. He's taking this accident really hard. He was a good friend of JJ and his family.
While JJ was a free spirited young man he took precautions in the sports he enjoyed. Sadly this time those precautions weren't successful and he wasn't able to be revived.
Blacking out while free diving happens to everyone eventually. I wish people would never do this without spotters and weighted line. So sad.
