Is Max Verstappen UNDERRATED?!

  • Verstappen’s dominance of F1 since 2022 is unprecedented. His 75.9% win rate since the start of the new ground effect era is almost unbelievable. He pulled off a previously unimaginable season in 2023, winning all but three races and scoring more than double the points of his second placed teammate, Sergio Perez. However, for the past three seasons, we’ve been told that Red Bull have the best car by a long way and if any other half decent driver had been in that Red Bull seat since 2022, they would have done just as well as Max. Now I’m no Max Verstappen fan, but that narrative always surprised me. So today on don’t at me, I’m going to ask you the question, is Max Verstappen underrated? I’m George, this is F1 Reverse, and please don’t at me.

There are very objective metrics to judge Max's achievements. If you check the F1 stats, you'll see that the grid has never been closer, and still Max gets on top. When was the last season that a team that ended second in the constructors championship didn't win a race? Even when this team had a seven times world champion riding for them.
I've been following F1 since the mid seventies, and I've never seen a driver like Max!

Max had 28 wins before 2022. That is against Mercedes at their peak.

    For reference
Charles 6 wins in almost 7 years
Lando 1 win in almost 5 years
Carlos 4 wins in 9 years
Perez 6 wins in 12 years
Max had more wins in 2023 than the top 5 drivers combined over their entire careers. That takes some serious skill.

Only recently more non-Brits are invited as guest or co-host in media shows.
Max is also obsessed with improving himself, the car and the team. one example: the race start. A few seasons back this was a weakness. behind the scenes all have worked to make it a strong point for this driver/car combination.

@@HerveMaas Cheo is a well known quality, has always been well respected driver. He's had a lot of teammates, quite strong amongst them before Max. and his record, both in qualifying and races is not a secret as well. If Checo was a complete and utter meme, Red bull would've never signed him in 2020 to start with. And if you go back in time, and read on the internet what were, all casual fans, experts and aficionados asking red bull to do, it was basically to dump Albon and put a great driver Checo in his seat, who would run Max a lot closer.
Now of course a lot of clowns start changing history, making a total idi*ot who could never drive a car fast out of Checo, with only one Idea at back in their mind - to diminish Max and downplay what he is doing in that car. Though he was destroying all his previous teammates without single exception.
Max outqualified not only teammate Sainz by 0.8s on a dry track as a rookie in Austria 2015, but both Red bull drivers. Someone tell me it was the car as well!!!!

He was molly coddled by Ron Dennis from the beginning of his career. Make no mistake, he has talent, but there are very few instances where he pulled off an amazing win, against the odds.
You'll see plenty of videos of Senna, Schumacher, Raikonen, Hakinen & others doing so, but never Hamilton.
As for Max, he is fortunate to be in a great car, but with McLaren, Mercedes & Ferrari now, all being at the same level of performance & pace, he is still outperforming them. In my 57 years of following the sport, I have never seen another driver as consistently good as him.

Just look at the performance and the performance vs their teammates, that tells you to all you need to know on driver vs car.

Max is another class of Driver, the first of the prodigal drivers, probably one of a few.
When F1 started, it was mostly rich guys and then one or two actual race drivers, I'd call these guys Celebrity Drivers because while good at racing, they weren't treating it like they were a part of a sport team. Yes they were good, but do you really think they were preparing and training like they did today or even as far back as the 90's?
Then over time the sport gave way for more celebrity drivers and less rich dudes who want to drive. We moved into an era of celebrity drivers populating the field and then the profession drivers started popping up. You have people like Prost, Senna, Lauda who were great drivers and took the sport seriously. The treated it like they were athletes, until you get to Schumacher who was THE professional driver. He treated the sport like a career and was probably one of the few who can say that they had a career in F1 rather than a few year stint and won a Championship. Then we don't forget those who came after Schumacher too. Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton they are all Schumacher's in a post Schumacher era of F1.
Now we have Max the first of the prodigal drivers. These are going to be the children that are treated like science experiments by their parents. We may not get many of these guys, we may see only Max or we could see someone else who follows in Jos Verstappen's shit laden footsteps and whip their kid just the right amount to become another Prodigy. I bet we'll also hear stories about parents either abusing their child to extreme lengths to imitate Max's upbringing or the kids snap and end up taking out their anger on their parents. It's a scary thought really what Jos did to Max and how well it worked.
Then we look to the future. Would there be another tier to eclipse these Prodigals? Is it possible that in the future some rich asshole would make a designer baby that was genetically perfect for F1? Could children's childhoods move from spending a weekend at the track and getting interested in karting to growing up in a lab and practicing as soon as they're able? I know it sounds crazy, but there will always be a first for everything before there are laws limiting actions like these.

Elon Musk has a company under his belt, which develops a human machine interface. Its called Neuralink. They had their first humans trials in putting a microchip the head of a disabled person, to move prosthetics with the mind.
Some eccentric madman might actually implant such a chip into the head of a newborn, and feed it with all the information about a certain topic. Make it learn while sleeping. Simulate things inside the mind.
This is not only for racing, its for everything. New Albert Einstein? New Michael Jordan? New Tom Brady? Hybrid humans are the future, with technology that is directly connected to human bodies.

I wonder if this video changes after the race in Austria today where we saw the real Max Verstappen show up ?
As was said by someone else, Max is okay when he has the car to do the job for him but when he has to do the job himself, he can't deal with it and has to resort to dirty tactics.
The man clearly has trouble dealing with direct competition. In this particular case, he unnecessarily cost himself a win, considering the penalty that was coming Landos' way, but he may just have destroyed a good friendship.
    Way to go Max.

You know, Im a Sergio fan for life, have been since his GP2 days. It has always been ups and down for me as an F1 fan. Checo is my #1 driver and Charles is my #2. so this season is looking bad for me LOL. I was surprised Sergio got a contract renewal to be honest. But now that you mention his deficit is half what it was last season, i guess it makes more sense. It is crazy how Sergio is suffering so much AGAIN though. and annoying quite honestly. Every race i see his deltas slowly dropping no matter who is ahead of him. I think his time should have been up at the end of the season with RB. I don't like seeing him struggle like this. Really, that car has never suited Sergio, and so he is slow because he doesn thave the confidence to send it, when he does, it usually ends badly anyway. Id like to see him go to Merc or Aston. those cars suit his style 100 times better.

I think Max is good because he has this ability to look at the whole picture. He finely crafts his driving skill on the Sim. He practices relentlessly. He was trained to handle wet weather which really improves driver skill to another level. Because his father trained him on every aspect of the car by forcing him to assemble his own cart he is able to give proper feedback and get Red bull to build a car that will achieve the victories. Michael Schumacher was able to do this. Build a team around him. While Hamilton is a skillful driver, I don’t think he has the ability to really talk with the designers and engineers to make the car that is needed to win races the way Max can. Of course it helps to have a skilled race engineer like GP, amazing pit crew and an extremely well organized team. And while Adrian Newey is very good, I believe he also needs Max’s feedback to design the perfect car. Sergio has none of these skills.

When people say, "it's the car", I think it's shorthand for all the things outside of the driver's control. Pit stop performance, strategy, teammate, etc.
I think Bottas was a more competitive teammate than Checo (not necessarily in pure skill, but Checo's tire whisperer style didn't gel as well with the car developed towards Max's preferences) and nobody can say that Red Bull hasn't been perfect in terms of strategy and pit stops.
I'd rate Max today in the same league as peak Hamilton, peak Schumacher, peak Senna, etc, so not underrated, but perhaps the narrative around him has him under-appreciated

    • @Selendeki
      @Selendeki 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

Surprisingly the things you mentioned are factors that the driver has a significant influence over, and I think in Max's case, even control. I think a big reason why the RB team is so motivated and works as hard as they do is because of Max's uncompromising drive and motivation to win. I'd wager that inspires them to put in the extra effort, which might be missing in other championship contender teams. At the end of the day, these are factors we can only speculate about. But I do say these things based on interviews I've seen of team principals and Adrian Newey.

I was always against Max, what happened in Abu Dhabi blah blah blah. But with his success has grown his humility and his humour. He is by far the most talented driver, the gap between him and his team mate is absurd, despite all the "excuses" he could use for slip ups or bad races or quali's he just takes care of business over and over again. He's the fastest over one lap, then the fastest over 50 laps, then goes home and is the fastest on the sim too! As a car nut I love everything to do with cars and F1, it's literally in my blood. Max is surrounded by assholes like his Dad and Horndog. But he has shown to be a fierce competitor, a loving step father and an amazing champion. Exceptional growth.

I think Max is under appreciated due to the quality of the competition and Red bull raising the bar for other teams to catch in terms of the car. I feel the truest test of a legendary driver are seen in the examples of Schumacher going to Farrari (who were under performing at the time) and winning there also, thus negating any criticisms that it was all the car. I'd love to see Max test himself this way.
P.S. I also love Piastri and think that a little more expience is going to make him a real contender. He already pushes Lando to greater achievements. Without a doublt, the greateset pairing of drivers in the field at this time.
