I test drove a Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor last friday and the next day I test drove the Polestar 2 Long Range, both the Single and Dual Motor variants. Here's what I found:
    - Steering on the Polestar feels natural and progressive. With the Model 3 the steering kind of felt like I was driving a car in a videogame, like the steering wheel wasn't really connected to the road.
    - Accelerating in both the Polestar models was set up way more progressive, the Model 3 seems to nervous and fidgety with the acceleration.
    - One pedal drive on both is great and relaxing for in-town driving, I didn't need the brake pedal during the test rides. But on the Model 3 there was no option to alter the amount of regenerative braking so lifting your feet off the accelerator ment the car would brake quite significantly. On the Polestar you have the option to set it to a lighter option or even turn it off. On the lighter version it was the right amount of braking for me: it felt natural and I didn't even need to get used to it.
    - Suspension and damping seems better set up on the Polestar 2: over country roads and bumps in the highway the Polestar 2 was more of a comfortable ride than the Tesla Model 3
    - I love the drivers display right behind the steering wheel showing me the speed, battery percentage, navigation and more. I don't mind looking to the screen in the middle on the Model 3 for my speed and navigation but the drivers display on the Polestar 2 is more convenient and in my opinion very cool
    - Polestar 2 and Model 3 both have an electric tailgate but where the Model 3 only has a button to open it the Polestar 2 also has a foot sensor to open it with, can be useful
    - Polestar 2 had enough space for me as a driver, the left and right back passengers have plenty of leg room and can almost fully stretch out under the seats in front of them. But there is a hump in the floor since it has a transmission tunnel from sharing the XC40 platform where as the Model 3 has a completely flat floor. The Model 3 on the other hand seemed to have a bit of a lower roof right above the passengers than the Polestar 2. The Polestar 2 has a bit of a higher roof right above the passengers but the top side does slope inward a bit more so you could feel like you're sitting to close to that with your head. The back seats are closer to the floor in the Model 3 so your legs won't feel as comfortable as in the Polestar 2 where you do sit up a bit higher.
Going to test drive the Model Y this month too and then I'll have to make a decision for which one to buy: Polestar 2 or Model Y? My heart says Polestar 2..

First off, thank you for your thoughts, but, for me, coming from an 2016 Volvo v60 hybrid and test driving this model:
    1. Comfort:
    - my knee was rubbing against the V shaped center console right at the top of the side pocket - deal beaker :(. I had a gentlemen approach me as I was dropping off the car and he said he has the same problem in his Tesla Model 3 and confirmed that this model has this problem too as I've let him test the seating.
    - suspension really noisy over bumps
    2. Interior
    - small windows and windshield - first time entering the car it felt like a cave as there was no sunroof.
    - pour visibility in the back - I had a car several meters behind me at a traffic light and I could barely see the occupant's heads
    3. Driving assistance
    - traffic sign recognition is worse than my 2016 car - while using the pilot assist it will be on the old speed limit while the new one is clearly posted. Also when you change roads it stays on the old road speed limit.
The good parts, Kris said already so there is no need to repeat them.

The Model 3 does look great on paper but the primary reason I dismissed it is its styling, it doesn't matter what the price is, what the capabilities are if i don't like the styling of a car it's ruled out. Also I don't like the interior of the Model 3, I don't like its design, the materials or the fit & finish. Minor issues are it's a sedan, the hatchback version (the Y) is even uglier and more bulbous than the Model 3. And there seems to be a culture among Tesla owners that I just don't want to be associated with. Supercharger network is a big plus but others are improving and my EV need is primarily commuting.
So I have ordered a Polestar 2, with real leather. I'm expecting a high quality, quick, well made, hatchback EV, the Android based infotainment is a bonus.

It is the same reason Audi E-Tron sales are high in Norway but low everywhere else. Norway has low speed limits and lots of charging infrastructure.

I test drove one yesterday and just was not sold enough to buy one. Really like the looks and handling at least from the Performance package that my tester had is amazing around corners but awfully stiff over the bumps. Maybe most ev's are like this but at higher speeds it felt kind of empty. They also had a used Model Y Tesla and driving that made the Polestar seem so much better it almost pushed over the edge to buy. I would say that lousey counsel and the cramped seating was just too off putting to pull the trigger on something that cost that much. Would like to see what they can tweak in the near future because this is close to really good. Good video.

Think/Hope you are on your way to great things with your channel as you are reviewing like us car buyers do (surprising how many reviewers don't). For many of us it is not all about range/efficency/performance etc. If it was your Etron would not have been best selling car in Norway last year. Looking forward to seeing lots more reviews by you in future on all the new EV's that will be hitting the market and nice to see a channel that is not predominantly filled with "T" reviews. Why the 20" alloys rather than the 19"?

      @KrisRifa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words and that you recognize what I'm trying to do different. I have stopped doing reviews in the traditional sense, and this series that I call "Don't buy X before watching this" has become the "review" I do. It is in a may ways a summation of the week or two I have with these cars. It's a culmination of what I actually think is important to know before going out and buying the actual car. I try to break it down into specific segments so if people want they can skip what they find irrelevant and watch what they care about. So I hope people keep watching them as they have since the first one I made in December 😊 As for the 20s rather than the 19s, I just think they look better and suit the car more. They have the same width tires, so I don't think you will loose much range either. And the ride being as good as it is, I don't think it will matter much.

I'm pretty sure that the 10% more efficient heatpump is not gonna give you 10% more range, but is 10% more efficient than the existing systems (can't remember what it's called). Considering that the heatpump/the 'old' heatpump uses up to 20% of the power withdrawn from the battery, the 10% increase in efficiency is calculated from the 20% of the total power consumption.
TLDR; I believe the heatpump is not gonna give you 10% more range, but more something along the lines of 2-4% increase in range.
I may be wrong tho, if anyone can educate me I'd love to learn.

Keep in mind peeps that Kris drives and Audi E-tron himself as a daily, comparing this to the Tesla 3 is based on that as well, sound and noise reduction is a biggy for him coming from the Audi. Tesla Bjørn for example never has complained about it seeing he has a tesla standpoint. Id say the benefits of a tesla fair outweigh the Polestar regardless of the better noise reduction but find out for yourself :)

Valid point, I am comparing the M3 to other cars that are much cheaper like the e-2008 and it still much noisier 😬 And Bjørn has actually mentioned the road noise an the lack of comfort in the M3. So much that he paid a lot of money to have his M3 sound insulated ☹️

Although the charge speed and efficiency comparisons of the Polestar with Tesla aren't huge it is the combination of the two along with with the Supercharger network which still make Tesla more attractive. Unless Polestar have something to compete with the upcoming 4680 battery and chassis castings they will always be playing catchup.
I do think that the Polestar centre console is a bit intrusive. Tesla still have to improve their panel tolerances and I would prefer a hatchback layout without having to go for the bigger size and greater expense of the Model Y.
The next couple of years will be interesting as the car manufacturers establish their product lines in the EV market.

Hello. Thank you for this review. One thing that stands out for me about tesla is the Sentry Mode for safety. I am driving the Polstar 2 now because my model 3 is in the shop. I was rear ended while parked in a shopping center. The car recorded the entire incident and alerted me that something happened. I had absolute proof for insurance claim. The Polstar is ok but 1) no Sentry Mode, 2) the view from the driver seat out of the front windshield is much more narrow from top to bottom, 3) I still have not figured out how to use the autopilot (poor interface), 3) if something happens while I am driving Or parked, I can’t record incidents (Sentry Mode)
I am happy there are more electric
Cars out there, but your choice to with an equally priced car with less range and less security features is absurd. Isn’t safety and security always #1 for anything we do?

    Hello,
    Very nice and detailed video.
I am really interested in buying a Polestar 2. I did a long test (2 days). I love the way it looks both outside and inside. I fully agree with you that it drives and rides very well. I find the single motor long range the best option for me. Not living in a country with much snow, the added safety of 4 wheels drive is not really needed. I prefer the added range.
As much as I have enjoyed driving the car, and liked the way I could use Google assistant, I have also been very frustrated by some things I could not do on this 2021-2022 car.
Even if it is possible to used Spotify to listen to music or stream the music via Bluetooth from the phone, I used to have my music on USB key or SD card (so I do not need to use the phone). I have tried to use both USB-C ports on the central console to connect a USB key but I could not access to the music stored there. Is it something I missed there or is there really no way to have music there? In t he later case, I find that quite bad.
What frustrated me the most was Google navigation when needing to have waypoints. Using waypoints is something I use a lot when visiting a region . I would have like to use it while testing the Polestar but could not.
What I do with the navigation app on my phone, is to select the final destination and then choose waypoint by navigation the map and selecting the waypoints with the finger when I find nice roads. These waypoints have no name or precise address since they are most of the time “in the middle of nowhere”. It was possible to select the final destination with the finger but not the waypoints.
I find this very frustrating. The only way I think of is to be able to prepare the itinerary on a phone / tablet / PC and then send it to the car. Without that I would still have to use an app on my phone while visiting regions which I find a pity with this car.
Do you have any thoughts about this?
Hope to have some feedback on this.
    Thanks.
    Phil.

Polestar 2 (pilot pack + long range dual motor) so without the Plus pack (was becoming out of budget with that for my company car), that's actually what i have ordered. In Space color of course. It is a no brainer for me really.
Tried also Tesla Model 3 but the insane glare on the screen (which on top of that is impossible to read with polarized sunglasses unlike other cars because those have bigger fonts), the lack of screen behind the driving wheel, the font size on the screen being too small, screen position with no possibility to orientate it towards driver, the interface is too clumsy and icons too small to push while driving, lack of Apple CarPlay, the lack of confort compared to P2, the drive shifter on the wheel, the way it looks so ugly inside and outside... Made me take the P2. What's the point having a long range and faster charging if you have all the above annoyances.
And it's not like they are just 1 or 2.
I actually don't understand how the TM3 can sell so well which such huge flaws.
It looks like people buy them "on paper". very ackward

    Hi Kris,
Great review. The Polestar is on my shortlist. Same goes for the V60 T5.
My main reason to select a car is the quality of the audio system.
Volvo has the Bowers & Wilkins optional set in the V60. Polestar has the Harman Kardon standard.

Getting a long range Polestar 2 plus package. But i recently came to understand there is actually no blind spot detectors, something even the Dacia Stepway i looked at had! 65’000 USD (620’000 SEK) and this car lacks some really basic stuff. Really annoys me to be honest. Wish it was a Tesla. I really feel it would be better to have one extra cheaper upgrade with some really basic tech like this, steering heat warmer and wireless charger. Something like that.

    • @farodopi5170
      @farodopi5170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Blind spot is on the pilot pack. You picked the wrong pack.
I ordered it with the opposite pack.
I could leave without plus pack which includes glass roof, upgraded sound and upgraded seats material. But not the pilot that included the active cruise control fog lights and 360 camera.
I agree it’s a pain but at least you can choose.
Tesla is imposing the full options thing so you end up with dozen of things you don’t need.
By the way here with comparable specs Tesla is more expensive by 8000€. Strange it’s not the case out there

  • @keithshayle123
    @keithshayle123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Very good and informative video! I have watched a lot of TH-cam content on the Polestar 2, and perhaps with the light Nappa leather interior it would certainly help, but I can't help feeling this is trying to be a purely functional car as opposed to a luxury car. I'm wondering whether this is intentional to appeal to the environmentalists, as Volvo can do the luxury 'thing' very well. Also given the amount of press given to the next Polestar the 3, which completely freed from the Volvo XC40 underpinnings,' will be the car to show the real design language of the brand and be a true stab at a luxury EV. However with reference to the '2' my observations are only made from videos, which mostly show the dark interior, and actually seeing and sitting in the car may well dispell my concerns.

    • @KrisRifa
      @KrisRifa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Glad you like the video 😊
As you may have seen in this and other videos I've done on the P2 I'n not in love with the interior, and that may also be because they have only given me interiors with fabric seats that are dark. If you watch my Volvo content, especially the XC90's I owned I loved those interiors. Much of the reason is because of the light colored leather in my cars. I've requested a Polestar 2 with the light colored leather, but they have failed to deliver. I have sat in one though, and It is very nice place to sit 😊

Constructive criticism: While watching this video, I paused it several times because of incessant background bird tweeting sounds. At first I thought some birds were having a fight on my balcony. Then I thought there must be some birds tweeting near the reviewer. Then I realised there is a barely audible background track of a stupid whistling tune. It really took my focus away from the review and I wish it wasn't there at all. You do you but when editing your video, in segments where you are talking the sound has to be clear and without distracting noises.

Just being honest, you sounded like Polestar offered you something to make this video, especially after watching your original review. Would you really "deal with" the seat being uncomfortable in a $60,000 car that should be fun to drive? Just to review the negatives and positives vs a Tesla Model 3....Negatives....about $10,000 more expensive, less of a warranty on the battery by 20,000 miles, historically more expensive to fix (in the US), not comfortable and crammed in the seats and surrounded by the non functional console, not as efficient, much less range, longer time to charge, and not very good at updating software. On the other hand, the Positives are we get a $7,500 tax credit in the states, it is much nicer looking car compared to the model 3, I love the double displays on the dash as well as the android system and voice control, but that is about it. If they were the same price I might go for it, but paying more for something that seems inferior? I appreciate the review though. Thank you for taking the time and giving your opinion.

"The TM3 is better on paper", but we don't care about the specifics! What counts is the feeling and the taste of each one, especially when you only drive big German cars!
Indeed, the conclusion was written from the start.
But we can understand your opinion on your bases and your tastes.
Favouring the models of energy consuming cars that are getting heavier and heavier, and therefore less efficient is a choice of influencer !
For Volvo/Geely's axis of improvement on efficiency, they will improve for sure, but where will TESLA be at that time?
TESLA model 3's margin of progress to reach it is great: but this product, designed in 2017, was not in this strategy: the Model S plaid? new quality orientation!
