Not an Oilers or Caps fan but Ekholm is a world class guy and this was a freak accident. Hope Oshie is okay.
No. It's not a freak accident. You can't just play the body on him. At no point has he had possession of the puck in this play. Bad hit, maybe just bad judgment, but you cannot make this hit.

@user-rk8jr9sq6b I'm sorry my 30 years of playing experience isn't enough for you to not be a keyboard judgmentalist on the internet. How many years you played hockey bud?. It's interference. You are entitled only to the space you occupy, not the lane your opponent throws a pick on. If there were a sudden change in direction by both players itd be different, but Ekholm actively chooses to check. Oshie never possessed the puck, and isn't expecting to be hit.
As I said in a comment below, probably not malicious, just bad judgment. But your intentions do not dictate whether or not you committed an infraction. The action does.
Ekholm is all class. He definitely doesn't want anyone to ever get hurt

Unfortunate to see this. Ekky is a top notch guy and this was clearly an accident.
It's important to remember right now that Oshie has had a history of multiple concussions. Once you've had a single concussion if you recieve another it will be worse due to the repeated movement of your brain in your skull. I hope he will be alright and recover soon.
I may be a Leafs fan but I'll admit it's extremely difficult to not like Oshie.
He's hiding multiple concussions because he has a bad habit of crossing the offensive blue line and not looking around lack of awareness

Could be a blessing in disguise for Washington. He's one of the veterans who need to be benched and if it is career ending then that's another 5m in cap hit off the books

Ekholm is a class act man, he's just one of those guys you can't dislike, regardless of what team he's on.
Kind of a weird play. Puck carrier crossed behind Oshie and lost the puck in Oshie's feet, which caused Oshie to glance down and not see Ekholm. Ekholm is crossing over and following his man and the puck and catches Oshie by accident. Oshie has a few concussions and his father died from a brain disease, probably best to maximize time with family.
That would suck so much for hockey as a whole, but he’s had a hell of a career - hope he’s ok

Even if it was my favorite player down, I couldn't see a problem with this hit. Not even a hit... more of a collision . Oshie was crossing in and Ekholm was actually trying to pick up the other guy behind him. This was just two guys pretty much bumping into each other with their heads down. Ekholm picked his head up, so he was prepared for the contact , Oshie wasn't.
T.J has always been one of those players you cannot dislike, even when playing against your team.
As a Penguins fan I concur.

The puck is literally touching 77's back left skate a split second before he's hit and when he hits the deck the puck is inches from his face shield. Ekholm is playing the puck. Oshie was trying to lay a casual pick with his head down and physics took over. Hope 77 was just winded and didn't injure his shoulder.
It may not look like it, but I think Ekholm was actually going for the player carrying the puck but Oshie came in between them. If you play it at normal speed, it definitely would seem more likely
That’s definitely what it looks like to anyone who doesn’t despise the Oilers. Eckholm has never been a dirty player, and doesn’t even throw unnecessary hits.
Definitely no intention of injuring, to me it looks like they both tried to crisscross and ran into each other and Oshie being in a vulnerable position not expecting it. Ek’s physical but not a dirty player, good on him for apologizing, hope Oshie’s okay though

I only see T.J and Matias collide with each other, that's it, if some of you guys are calling Embellishment on T.J or a four game suspension on Matias, it won't happen, its just a unfortunate accident, and Matias knows he does not want anybody injured.

Good no call from the refs, clearly an accident. Oshie is my favorite player so this sucks as he's always injured in the most ridiculous of ways.
Just because it was an "accident" and wasn't intentional doesn't change the fact that it was textbook interference. Is an accidental high stick not high sticking? Is that puck over the glass not a penalty because the player accidentally got too much under it while trying to chip it off the glass? Nope that's not how the game works, if everything was called based off of intention then every game would be 0-0 because the goalie intended on stopping that puck that got past him and into his net but yet nearly every puck shot near the goal would also count as a goal as 99% of the time the puck is shot with the intention of scoring a goal. That is textbook interference and an awful no call which likely significantly effected the storyline of the game

Caps have had really bad luck with players getting injured after they break a slump. Mantha, Kuzy and now Oshie.
Kuzy getting injured was kind of the catalyst for us to go on and win 5 on the bounce... Whilst I miss osh and hope he doesn't take too long out the lineup hopefully that fires the boys up to go on and start smashing teams again 🤞

Kinda high speed and also looks like he wasn't expecting a hit which can be devastating
After each concussion the next one take less force to do more damage
much faster than you think, and that collision with the ice was much more intense because it is unexpecting

If you watch the ice level angle from behind ekholm. You can see that he wasent even looking at oshie, oshie and mcmicheal crossed and tj kinda skated right into the hit Ekholm was trying to lay on mcmicheal

Ekholm wasn't expecting Oshie to cross. Just an accidental collision. Looks like Oshie damaged himself on this one. That sucks. Both great players. Hopefully he's back soon.
Couldn't really make that hit a less dangerous way, but if we make that kind of hit illegal ( which we've made it harder already) then players have free reign to skate across the middle of the ice uncontested with their heads down

Holy smokes Ekholm couldn’t have seen him coming he was dead focused on the play… that’s such an unfortunate hit.
Even the usual tropes don't work here. Oshie had his head up, maybe too late to do anything but he saw the hit coming and it was like hitting a wall. Both Ekholm and Oshie are players player so to speak, great team guys, great for the fans and the game. Hope to see Oshie recover.

That is incredibly bad luck, I've never seen a blind hit laid out like that and it also being a complete accident.

The only possible call is interference on Oshie.
"Receiving hit" in the title is a stretch, that was a collision. The commentator needs to find a new job because he has no idea what he is talking about. "There was no puck around Oshie, it should definitely be a penalty." Come on, man. They skated into each other, if you aren't paying attention, find a new job.
That being said, I was glad to see Oshie stand up after the accident, never good to see a play like that go down that hard. Hope he recovers soon!
Ekky is built like an ice box. That was not intentional by any means but damn what a hit.
I know everyone is saying it already but damn really hit me seeing it happen to Oshie, the contrast of him being mic'd up for warmups full of energy compared to him having to leave early :/
Oshie is beloved in DC. Plays so hard. His body just can't take the punishment anymore. Both he and Backstrom should retire after this season.

At 1:37 "there was no puck around Oshie". It just bothers me when announcers outright LIE like that. (The puck was right at Oshie's feet.)

Ekholm got caught up chasing the puck carrier with no clue he was being picked up by a teammate. Unfortunate situation. Obviously unintended. A little more awareness and that contact doesn't happen. Nice of Ekholm to address Oshie.
For those people crying interference: the puck was passed right near Oshie's skates. He was eligible to be checked.
I hope Oshie is ok and he does have a big concussion history. But that's not interference.

It looks like Oshie ran into Eckholm because his eyes were on the puck. Eckholm didnt see Oshie because his eyes were on the puck carrier. Eckholm finished the check because reflexes.

Встряхнуть . А Овечкин всегда с разгона таранил игроков с большой скорость и приэтом его по ходу распирала гордость вот по этому я желаю ему такого-же . А если его бортанут или применят силовой прием он всегда старается отомстить обязательно ударит с зади клюшкой или толкнет и этому масса примеров . Я не собираю на него досье , нафиг он мне нужен но во многих случаях именно так он и поступал .
Caps fan here fair hit by ekholm head positioning was unfortunate. Got a little crossed, with mcmicheal. Hope osh comes back healthy and stronger. You could tell the caps looked demoralised after that one.

It looked like Oshie was running a pick play, hoping to screen the puck carrier from the defenceman to give him space and possibly try to drive the d-man back. I think he misjudged the time and space between D and puck carrier so instead of pushing back the D he instead gets flattened by a player already reaching to get the puck.
Concussion and Alzheimers are very serious. His dad had it unfortunately. The health and long term effects are not worth it. Hope he realizes it before it’s too late.

Accidents happen things are going so fast out there that sometimes people are going to run into each other hard. Though it is a penalty accident or not, not sure if anything was called
Oshie knew exactly what he was doing, exactly where elkolm was and where the puck carrier was. Oshie was runnning a pick, this was a set play for zone entry.

Two guys just run into each other sometimes. Risk of the game. Look at Shanahan and Knuble for an extreme example.

No that's textbook interference because the goalie no longer has the puck. Just because the puck carrier swung behind Oshie doesn't mean a guy can blow Oshie up, that's textbook interference
@@chrismac5560 actually, according to the rule book. Rule 625 A(3) interference states: "An attacking player who no longer has possession or control of the puck initiates contact with the defending player in an effort to obstruct their ability to play the puck or an opponent."
So, technically, you're right. Oshie deserved a minor for interference

Caps fan. Total accident. Appreciate Ek for sticking around and how he handled it. That being said. Man. I love Osh so much. But his cap hit, at his age with his injury history. I’m looking at Dylan Strome leading the team in goals, Protas and Connor have both been good on this west coast trip. First year head coach and this teams doing a lot better than I expected 25% through the season. Might be time to hang up and move on from some familiar faces we in DC have come to know and love.
i dont want to blame oshie and he is a great player, but what did he expect entering the zone like this with his head down?
