This was a lifesaver! I edit video for a pretty big company and our upcoming show needed animated map graphics. I was approved for the Studio the same day and I followed your video to get me through it. Thanks man!
Wow, this is the ultimate guide to animated google maps routes. Finally I understand how it's done. I became your absolute fan! Cheers form Portugal :)
Looks really cool and not too complicated. I imagine if the route were created in segments each one could be made to appear in sequence. Still not an animated route per say, but the next best thing for now. The data points to do animation at 30 fps for a route becomes the challenge I would think for processing.
Very true, Mark! You can always export two videos, and leave the path off of one. Then bring both into After Effects and animate a simple mask to reveal the path. You can do this in Premiere Pro as well. 😎
Hey I was also wondering if there is a "zoomed out to zoomed in" option. I have a B&B in a small village and wanted to make a zoom in video so people can get a picture of where the location is in relation to other big cities. Do you have any videos that could help with this?
Do you know if there is a way of animating the route from the perspective of the "little orange man'? I'm trying to produce some custom route maps for motorcycle trips and would like to be able to see, before I take a specific route or road, what that road actually looks like so I can change the route before commiting it to a map. Think of this as watching a GoPro POV video of me riding down a road, but using the Google Earth/Maps without having to click on the direction arrows on that road. Often I've ridden roads and afterwards some has said "oh, you should have gone down this road instead of that road, its far more scenic", or words to that effect. I guess it must be a feature if you can physically click on each route in 'Street View' by draggin the little orange man to that road and it changes the view from a map to an image view - I just can't work out how to do it.
thank you very much for your video tutorial. Very usefull for me now. Anyway at the Render/ Save you can save the project in mp4 video format, so this is little update :)
Hi Boone, I've got a problem when I import my KML file into Google Earth they don't show up on the Google Earth map even though I see them on the timeline . I've added opacity keyframes too. Not quite sure what I've done wrong. Any suggestions? Update! I didn't type in my location to update the map. Thanks for the tutorials, they are super helpful
Pardon the ignorance as I'm just learning this... I've seen a video out there that allows you to do this but with essentially property boundary lines and we could then animate around that. How can I do this?
What if you're not traveling from tourist destination to tourist destination? What if you just want to travel along a road? Right clicking on a Google map (in this context, via mymaps/) does nothing, which means you can't get the coordinates for locations. Is there some other way to set a location without having to use a series of named waypoints?
Great question. You can use the Marker tool to drop a marker somewhere. And they you can set a route between several markers. Does that answer your question?
Hi Boone I need some help in creating a route map for my delivery job. Sometimes, I have more than 300 deliveries but I couldn’t find any video or tool which can help me route these many. Pls help. Thanks in advance.
Hi there, great video, I'm just wondering if it's possible to make a map (of the world) like this, but then when you click on each marker it could show you an mp4 video you upload or some text/video? I've conducted interviews with people from around the world from a project so I'd like to make a sort of interactive map where you click on each place and it shows you the interview, but not sure if this is possible. Many thanks in advance!
Very cool! I have a Bike Ride in TCX (MapMyRide format), so I converted to KML, imported into Earth Studio, but i I can´t create an animation properly, the Starting point and the Ending point is the exact same, is a "round" (almost a circle) round, so I can´t make Studio to use as beggining/End to create the animated map.. any tip?
Very cool. I hope I get accepted to use this. I actually work in the media industry and from previous experience, we would've had to have our "art department" work this animation and it would be (sometimes) painstaking work to get this done. I, personally, would just want to use this to animate our car club cruise route so that the Members would get an idea of how we do our drive. Thanks for giving the lessons!

@@BooneLovesVideo Thanks for responding. I'm not sure what the track point is, but the camera view itself will often drift in a different direction after deleting or moving keyframes around? If that makes more sense. Then it becomes difficult to wrangle the camera view back in after.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm not entirely sure about the waypoint names. Seems like something you'd have to add in a program like Adobe After Effects. And I'm not sure if iMovie can handle image sequences. You'd just have to give it a go and try.
