This is terrific. I'm new with GES and AE so, of course, what you've done is overwhelming. Thankfully, your step-by-step approach here will allow me to watch each of your moves so I can practice with this...applied to a project that's somewhat similar. Of course I'll be devotimg the next 2-3 months understanding what you did in less than 18 minutes. Thanks.
Thanks for a very detailed guide on this! A few things i stumbled upon: * If you render the video with 60p from Google Earth Studio the tracking points will get wacky in AE due to AE interpreting it as 30p, to fix this: " So all you needed to do was right-click the image sequence in the project panel, Interpret Footage, then set the frame rate to 60fps" Another thing i had a problem with was that it still didnt track correctly, this got fixed if i turned of 3D on the Shape layer and turned it on again, (i had to put the SVG file in correct position again after doing this) Thanks!
Echoing many of the comments already posted.... a really great tutorial on an essential process. In Illustrator, how do you deal with the "Join" function when it closes the path with a direct line between the start and ending points in addition to the mapped path created in MyMaps?
Spent a couple nights playing around with studio, and am now trying to use your tutorial. I have the route pasted into AE, but I can't seem to get it to fit. I've learned a lot, but think I'm going to have to figure out a plan B. May give it one more try another night... Thanks for the tutorial.
Watched 100 of videos and then I found this....this is what I exactly want ...Thank you so much for explaining it great and I'm going to subscribe for sure ...
I learnt so much about google studio which I probably should have known years ago, I work in news graphics so this is certainly going to speed up the bespoke map making and with more accurate results thank you so much for this tutorial.
Thanks for this video, the most useful I found on the subject! I didn't see the need to join the path in Illustrator, but I used Path/Simplify to reduce significantly the number of points. Also, I obtained acceptable 'close to 3D' results with mountains or hills by cutting the paths at strategic places in Illustrator and setting additional track points accordingly in Google Earth Studio where the path is cut (this helps zeroing anchor point to one end of the path). Then, fine tuning in After Effects with XYZ orientation and sometimes modifying individual points (but this later action will only work with limited camera movements). However, it's a time consuming process, and junctions are visible when joining several strokes of different width and color as in your example. So I'm stuck with using only one color stroke. I can't wait to see your solution with Blender + After Effects!
*ROUTE MOVING OUT OF SYNC - SOLVED* Firstly, thanks for this video, it was extremely helpful. The issue I had, was when I began to line/scale up the route to the map render, the line was going out of sync and alignment with the video. I was working in 25fps, and when importing the files into after effects there is a bug where it changes the frame rate to 30. You need to right click the file in the project, interpret footage and change to your desired frame rate
Thank you for the tutorial, it is very helpful. I have only one problem, I don't get the world coordinate system in AE when loading the scrip. Is there something I'm missing?
Excellent ! Congratulations ! I have the same issue than Fady : I follow the steps exactly many times, but once I get inside After Effects and make my shape layer 3D and parent it to my first track point, my path doesn't match the movement of the camera as in the tutorial. Please note in the overlay, I have only the "direction from Staple Center to Santa Monica" : I do not have the 2 single overlays "Santa Monica" & "Staple Center" because I used a GPX files from a device, but of course I add the 2 Track Points (Start & End). Any idea ?
I have found the solution. It is weird, but when I link the path to the video in the shape layer, it does not work the first time. I need to remove the link, and link it again to get it working. As it was weird; I tried several times, and sometimes it works at once, sometimes I need to make the link twice or three times.
Thank you really cool method. My only advice is do not try with very long paths, I've tried with some 100km long path and it is literally impossible to match the path on the map once in AE. So I will just reduce the km of my path and make smaller bits.
Good tutorial, but I can't repeat result. Trajectory of shape layer and JPG sequences are differ. I guess my problem is at 10:01 (parenting and linking), Could you explain this step in detail (why making a link with Stapler Center layer). There are two referent points in your tutorial: the first is Staple Center (Google Earth Studio Timecode 23:08), and the second is Santa Monica Pier (Google Earth Studio Timecode 23:24). But when you making a link with the first point, playhead of After Effects composition locates at 22:14). Why? May be it's a keystone of me failure? Thanks
Hi, I've developed new tools to import KML that are WAY easier... The video and free script are on our Tech channel. th-cam.com/video/g3uFrkKYPCg/w-d-xo.html
One thing to know. Adobe After Effects is used to render something called "tracking points" in the final video. Tracking points are usually something which is not part of the base layer such as text, etc. They track the overlying content correctly with the base layer. Most people do not even use tracking points. So the GES output content will import into Photoshop CC and other free video editors to render a high quality final .mp4 video. They just won't have extra layer tracking point content. I make mine with Photoshop. If I need text, I add it there on another layer. It doesn't track with the base layer but in most cases that is fine. You could even have that text move with Photoshop's built in animation key frame system if you wanted to. The point... Don't avoid GES because you think you need After Effects. That simply is not true. You do need some kind of a quality editor for final render however.
I must be doing something wrong - when I align my trackers, as soon as I move the footage on a couple of seconds to fine-tune, the route doesn't stay in place - would love to know what I'm doing incorrectly as this is perfect for a couple of projects
Thanks. Check out our other channel with updated videos. Here's how to create KML with Earth studio using a free script we developed: th-cam.com/video/g3uFrkKYPCg/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video! I would like to know if there is a similar way to achieve this effects but with an already existing video scene, not a 3d model. So I have a scene with my camera going across a street and showing parts of a square and I want to add a line that follows the path of the street and gets into the square. How could I achieve that? Any suggestions, tutorials, etc.? Thank you very much!!!!

@@imagiscope Got it! But now my line will not line up for the life of me lol. It lines up perfectly in the beginning and then slowly drifts, no matter how much I adjust the size and position.
That's is a strange anomaly. Have you tried a different project (new render of different place)? Also, the maximum real world distance for the path is about 50km/30miles. Anything further than that you have the Earth's curvature calculations which aren't accounted for in the flat 3D plane. We are developing a tool to work with Blender that accomodate real 3D paths with our other 3D scripts for Blander
I have encountered a problem processing svg in AI. when joining the path, it always connects the start and end points (so it becomes a loop instead of a path). I am not very familiar with AI, so looking for some help here. Thanks

There is an explanation for this, but I tried to explain it when the slice returned. Can you help me with that?
It's most likely altitude of the plane that contains the path. If the render contains varying altitudes, the plane will only overlay 2D which can also result in undesirable results.

Ok, I had to export the project to get the kmz file, however, when I try to "join" the path in AE, it connects the two end points and fills it in as a box instead of a line. I tried everything. What gives?
Really interesting video, I've been looking for something like this for years! I have just one question, in reference to the comment at 12:30. Is it possible to create a 3D path in After Effects in order to tune its altitude to better fit the Google Earth map altitude? It would be really useful to create trekking maps, where mountains create huge altitude shifts. Can you also tell me how can I get access to Google Earth Studio?
Hello, I know it was 2 years ago this question.. hahaha but im wondering if by any chance did you found a solution to your query? Im presenting exactly the same issue, and would be great if there is a way to fix it.
Hello! I was attempting to make an animation of a route across a state (San Francisco to LA) but the KML file doesn't seem to line up correctly. What could be some of the issues? Thank you!
The plane that the KML information is on is flat - the earth is a globe and curved (😉). I suspect that the distance between LA and SF will be affected by the curvature of the earth and thus the distances will be off.
This really looks like a cumbersome process! Wouldn't it be easier in this case to just draw the path in AE? In 3D-Software like cinema 4d or 3d max or blender you can use splines, give them 3d on top and animate the splines - so easy :-) In my opinion there are still some bugs in the keyframing in GE Studio. I play with it for some time now and still have problems to let it look smooth. When you add keyframes, esp. camera targets everything can get crumbled up before. I know cam target overwrites cam angle and tilt - you have to think what to animate first and what to keyframe first ;-)
Man, i'm having a terrible time in google studio when placing the keyframes... I coudn't create a smooth video without getting mad with the handles....

I have managed to paste the path layout in after effects and I have aligned it with the start and end points; but then when playing back the sequence the path moves with the camera and becomes misaligned, how can I make the path stay fixed and not be distorted with the camera?
@@imagiscope Thanks! I've been trying all day long but there is something weird happening to my C4D 3D object when merged to the after effects exported scene (the x,y,z scale is not uniform and when I try to set it back to 1,1,1 it keep on taking its own numbers...) Thanks again!

@@imagiscope Yes, I have been playing with it. Although the beautiful mountain peaks of Kauai are in 3D, the buildings unfortunately are not. I'm just trying to simulate a driving route without making my viewers getting car sick. LOL. This is a lot harder than it looks.

Had a lot of difficulty with getting the 3D objects I put on the map to stop moving out of sync with the 3D file - it's taken weeks!!. If anyone wants to do really big zoom ins from outer space, I've found it's better to do that as a seperate google earth capture, then create a new capture for closer work.
This effect is exactly what I've been looking for! I'm having one problem, though: when I join the .svg line in Illustrator, it joins the beginning and end of the line by creating a new line between them. It shows up in AE as part of the kml route. I must be missing something. ?
Can I use Google Earth footage in transitions between scenes and still get monetization for the video? Google Earth cannot be used for commercial use, however it can be used under the fair use guidelines. I've been searching for this answer and cannot find a clear YES or NO question bout this. Do you know the answer?
As I understand it, you can basically use it with the Google Earth logo (attribution) for pretty much anything BUT commercials (ads), feature films, selling a video to a client that has GES footage and videos that are deemed inappropriate (common sense). Contact Google for special uses.
thank's!! this tutorial is amazing, but I have a huge problem because when the route across the mountains or hills, after effect lose the right position of the spline :(
Unfortunately, After Effects doesn't have a 3D spline/path (only plane based). We've been working with some 3D techniques in Blender and Cinema 4D and we'll publish the results when they are available.
Would it be possible to start by rendering out a brightly colored KML route on the GES output, and then key it in AE and make an alpha mask? Next, bringing in the path from Illustrator and lining it up so that it floats right above. And then kind of "projecting" the animated properties of the path straight onto the mask, acting as a placeholder. Maybe making the path slightly wider than the alpha, for the sake of sanity when adding it in. The alpha should cut any visible excess width anyway. I might not make any sense, and I don't know if something kind of similar to this would be possible, but I just really want the route to be flush against the ground, while also keeping full control over it's animation and shading, without having to go back and forth between AE and C4D. My weak ass laptop ain't playing games 🤣

HELP!! Having 2 issues: the path does not follow the video and when I select the 3d option, the line disapears.
Follow this video: th-cam.com/video/g3uFrkKYPCg/w-d-xo.html
When i zero out the position of the shape layer, the line is disappearing. What i am doing wrong?
Hi, from Vietnam I cannot use Gg Earth Studio. Can you help !
Wow. Many thanks for sharing!
can we overlay kml file like this in a drone video ?
I have managed to paste the path layout in after effects and I have aligned it with the start and end points; but then when playing back the sequence the path moves with the camera and becomes misaligned, how can I make the path stay fixed and not be distorted with the camera?
facing the same issue. any luck?
when joining the ilustrator path, the end of the route joins with the begining, it's a mess.. i don't know what am i doing wrong.
help.
dont joint, its not necessary
Great tutorial! I’m wondering if it’s possible to do the Ilustrator part in Photoshop instead. Thanks
I'd suspect, not. The path will need to be a vector. You may be able to do it in other vector programs.
Hi! Is it possible to import 3D object created in Cinema 4D into After Effects without any costy plug in? Thanks
Yes. Here's the video: th-cam.com/video/F4uHEeO1PyE/w-d-xo.html
@@imagiscope Thanks! I've been trying all day long but there is something weird happening to my C4D 3D object when merged to the after effects exported scene (the x,y,z scale is not uniform and when I try to set it back to 1,1,1 it keep on taking its own numbers...) Thanks again!
@@challengerapp3953 while it's possible to use C4D, I found it difficult to integrate fully. That's why I focused my efforts on Blender.
Thank you so much! Saved the day!
I'm still waiting to get access to the Studio, does the gps information link the same way from an exported video of google maps pro?
have you got any answer yet?
@@rosettamx5080 No, I got authorized for google studio and just followed the tutorial. I received the certification within 8 hours
Hello, how do you add the icon/label in top of the Stapples staduim? the one animated

Thanks for sharing.
How can I do it in a mountain area with relief? Stroke does not conform to relief
Thank you
When we import our assets into AE, we are working in a "flat" environment. AE doesn't recognize elevations.
Coming soon - 3D kml routes done in Blender (with elevation)
Can someone please tell me how I can display country border within GES and use them in an animation? I know I have to download KML but hours of research didnt even provide me with a proper website where to download them? Anyone a tip how to solve this?
I am unable to understand the way u did the maping in adobe after effects
Thanks for the great tutorial! The newer version (current) when i switch off all the overlays, it only render me black screen, i guess i did something wrong here
My camera does not give me the 3D view of Kauai (Princeville to be specific). How did you get your camera to be at ground level
Not all regions of the world have been produced in 3D. It's going to take some time. Camera altitude can be manually set
@@imagiscope Yes, I have been playing with it. Although the beautiful mountain peaks of Kauai are in 3D, the buildings unfortunately are not. I'm just trying to simulate a driving route without making my viewers getting car sick. LOL. This is a lot harder than it looks.

Your so detailed ! SUBBED
What did you do to get the files to stop moving out of sync? I am trying to create a map from Texas to Tulsa
Very very good. Thank you!
This effect is exactly what I've been looking for! I'm having one problem, though: when I join the .svg line in Illustrator, it joins the beginning and end of the line by creating a new line between them. It shows up in AE as part of the kml route. I must be missing something. ?
Hello Rick, I have the same problem. Did you figure it out?
@@t-producciones5138 Not yet. I'm hoping the GE Studio/Blender solution works for me. Waiting with bated breath...:)
same problem here, it seems to work fine without joining them tho
Can I ask why does my Trackpoint move on After Effects when it should be stationary?
It's probably the camera moving. Try with default camera settings.
Nice bro, does this work with KMZ files or do they have to be KML ?
Just KML. A KMZ is just a zip file with KML file(s) inside. You can change extension to .zip and the extract the KML file contained within.
thank's!! this tutorial is amazing, but I have a huge problem because when the route across the mountains or hills, after effect lose the right position of the spline :(
Unfortunately, After Effects doesn't have a 3D spline/path (only plane based).
It works! Thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot .. how wonderful you are
Can you provide this type of customized video to a client for a fee?
I've been looking for this for a week and watched it within one hour of uploading so you read my mind. Great tutorial, how can you wave a flag overlaying a country while panning?
