1990 was Phil Jackson's first year as head coach and the Bulls spent the full year learning a new offense -- an offense meant to take the ball out of MJ's hands and utilize his teammates more. Although MJ's 1990 season numbers are mind-boggling, stats aren't everything. MJ in 1990 was a much better player than he was in 1988 despite the slight drop off in stats. And he was a substantially better player in 1990 than Lebron was in 2009 despite how close the numbers are.

    • @TayGee-mh8eo

He was a better leader. He was better at managing the game. He knew when to step on the gas. He knew how to stop the opposing team's runs. He knew better how to get his teammates involved. He was a better team defender. He was smarter. He was more mature. He knew how to find his spots on the court better. 1988 MJ was a tornado. He played at one speed (think Russell Westbrook but much better). In 1988, he produced more (better stats) but his teams weren't as good because his teammates were not as involved. MJ was much better in 1990 than he was in 1988.

  • @shabaazranney1418
    @shabaazranney1418 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

This is not even remotely close. I'm sorry, but Jordan was transcendent. I mean, come on, averaging 37 on absurd efficiency and then going on to average 43 ppg in the next round on 55% FG almost 40% from 3, in the 90s, alongside 7 assists and 7 rebounds? Lebron's never been capable of that, in any year. Jordan was another level of dominant, the highest that we've seen (perhaps Wilt was as well... we'll never know). Lebron is the best of his generation, like Kareem.
I'll never forget this stat. I saw it in 2016 so it probably needs to be updated, but at the time it was this ... 50 point playoff games since 1984. Jordan - 8. Rest of the league combined - 13. Kobe - 1. Lebron - 0 (He's had one since). People don't realize how hard it is to score against playoff defenses. Hell, look at what happens to James Harden every year, and he's one of the best scorers ever. Also worth noting is that Jordan had those assist number playing off ball shooting guard, not playing point like Lebron. Imagine Jordan's stats if he played point guard? The season that he did it for just part of the season, he averaged 32 8 and 8, closer to a triple double than Lebron ever has until 2 seasons ago when lebron put up worse stats at 25 10 and 8.

Is literally equal to prime Jordan's typical stats of 36, 6 and 6 in every playoff series for 8 years of his early career. Jordan is a far superior scorer. Top 10 playoff series averages of all time- Jordan has 7 of the top 10. Lebron doesn't appear once. 10 scoring titles to 1.... Scoring is not even close.

He did that for a team who was bottom 5 in the league in pace and in 2009 teams averages 8 less points per game than in 1990. People forget from the 70s to about 1993 the pace was actually about what it is right now, that's a great reason as to why we see the 80s have some of the most ridiculous stats ever (like I believe 9 of the 10 best ever assists per game seasons were in between 1980 and 1992, steals and blocks per game were at an all time high due to the pace and style of game)

@Zachary Ravel Two things though man, firstly 2009 was not as much a defensive era (as 1990) so comparing 2009 Magic to 1990 Pistons defensively in most cases you'll get laughed at. But in fairness Howard and that squad were good defensively for sure and yes compared to today that 2009 era was more defensive. Remember that 2009 series Magic were without their second best player and all-star against the Cavs, not the same team. Also the Magic double teamed Lebron around about 25% of the time he had the ball that series and Jordan was double teamed 75%+. - context matters bro, those series by comparison do favour MJ's argument in a big way

We here’s your first problem that’s 2010 Cavs
And even then you saw a significant decrease across the board. I mean how great are you teammates really in 09 if Bron has to lead the entire team in every category (yes even blocks since Ben Wallace and Big Z didn’t even hit 70 games) and your all star teammate made it via replacement.
Meanwhile Scottie got all star on his own merits, and you are lying if you really think Pippen, defensive stallworth Horace Grant, and good role players Paxon and Cartwright are less then Big Z, an old Ben Wallace, Delonte West.
Let’s not even get to the point of the 1990 Bulls apparently are overrated, by who? I don’t know anybody who says Jordan had an all time team in 1990. What? oh Scottie had a migraine and it meant Chicago could have won in game 7? That’s the extent to overrating the 1990 bulls? I mean if anything the 09 Cavs are overrated because this was a squad that was suppose to match tik for tak with the eventual 09 Lakers.

How disrespectful is that to his teammates. I get that they listen and get their info based off certain clowns like Shannon, Nick or whoever is on Klutch Sports' payroll. In reality he had a great supporting cast, better than MJ's '90 team as compared in this vid.

@@punyemas9783 no they didn’t, this 09 team (minus Lebron) was not even a stronger cast then the 11 Cavs team which added Antwan Jamison and THEY DIDNT WIN 20 GAMES.
They are professionals but that’s it. You can hold on to the stats but at the end of the day in the short future we saw how great those players were, they won 19 games when Lebron left
Oh but Big Z, and Shaq, and Mo who was traded and Delonte and hurt Varejao weren’t also there. Big Z and Shaq barely played the latter because of injury. They traded mo because they weren’t getting results and Varejao defense is going to get them more wins? Bottom line is those stats lose all value when just two years later they were one of the worst teams in nba history, and Bron got them 60 wins.

1990 is one the handful of MVP’s that MJ should’ve won. He led the league in PER/WS & WS/48 and other advanced stats. That year was actually a close race, not like today when someone loses by a large margin and his fanbase say he was “robbed” or that it was “close” when it wasn’t. Then you have MJ averaging 30 ppg for his career, and that’s after his second comeback where he “only” averaged 21 ppg with the Wizards at 38 and 39 years old.
I mean Lebron only has a career ppg of 27, and that’s with a ton of rules changes to make scoring EASIER. Even with those rules changes, he still can’t average what MJ did.

Lebron James is another poor man’s Michael Jordan. He’s been chasing Jordan his whole career and like all post Jordan era competitors, he falls woefully short. Jordan in 90 was on the ascension as an all around team leader and teammate. Instead of dominating teams individually (which is what he did in previous seasons), Jordan took a step forward in leading his teams on both ends of the floor. They won it all the following year on route to a 3peat. Lebron has only been a stat chaser. You can say he had a “weak” supporting cast all you want. That team was designed for Lebron James to flourish...stat wise. All the intangibles, leadership, clutch gear where he knows when it’s time for him to finish for his team is a role he has never taken by the horns🤣. There is no comparison between these two players. One painted a masterpiece on a blank canvas, the other has been trying to duplicate a savant using color by number methods.

They don't match up the same. And it is because of this I will never give modern players the non over how difficult the game was back then.

Jordan fanboys will say 90 Jordan and LeBron fanboys will say 09 LeBron. That being said, I tried to be as objective as I could in the below. Fair warning if you don't like to read long posts then don't read this, but don't complain that it's a novel as that only proves you have a short attention span.
In season both Jordan and LeBron played 39 minutes a game so per game comparison is fair as a per 36 or per 48 minutes would be the same. I know some like the per possessions thing (per 75 or per 100) but those are team possessions not individual possessions. Teams averaged almost 7 more possessions per 48 minutes in 1990 than they did in 2009. I know it attempts to account for pace, but taking a players' individual numbers and converting them to per team possessions seems flawed to me. I think going by per the time the player himself was out actually there and per his actual usage rate correlates more to the individual.
Now I'm not saying these tell the whole story but these are what the numbers that we have show:
90 Jordan season vs 09 LeBron season per game:
    PPG: Jordan +5.2
    APG: LeBron +0.9
    RPG: LeBron +0.7
    SPG: Jordan +1.1
    BPG: LeBron +0.5
TOV: Both had 3.0 turnovers, I wold minus whoever had more but equal here.
    TS% (incorporates FG + FT + 3PT): +1.5
    Overall (difference): Jordan +5.7
Wins: LeBron +10 or +11 (Jordan played 82 and LeBron played 81. I'm not sure if the Cavs won or lost the 1 game Bron missed but even if they won his missed game it would still be +10. LeBron was there for at minimum 65 wins vs Jordan there for all 55).
Both were selected by the coaches as first team all NBA and first team all defense. I don't really care what awards he media writers gave them. This is not a marketing agenda comparison.
90 Jordan playoffs vs 09 LeBron playoffs (Jordan played 42.1 mpg and LeBron played 41.4 mpg, extremely close but to objectively equalize I will do per the higher amount) so per 42.1 mins:
    PPG: Jordan +0.8
    APG: LeBron +0.6
    RPG: LeBron +2.1
    SPG: Jordan +1.2
    BPG: both at 0.9
    TOV: Jordan -0.8
    TS%: LeBron +2.6
    Overall (difference): LeBron +4.1
Wins: Both had 10 wins. LeBron won 2 in the conference finals, while Jordan won 3 in the conf finals, but Jordan only had to win 3 to get passed the first round vs 4 for LeBron in the same. So the losses will break the tie. Jordan lost 6, and LeBron lost 2. So LeBron 10-4 > Jordan 10-6. Conclusion: LeBron +0.8 in wins to losses ratio.
So stats for the year goes:
Jordan +1.6 season and playoff combined (Jordan 5.7 minus LeBron 4.1).
LeBron had more total wins and less loses. LeBron +10 wins season and playoff combined, and less losses 20 to Jordan's 33. Overall 75-20 vs 65-33. LeBron +1.9 in wins to losses ratio.
An extremely close comparison. So considering that Jordan had a better best teammate (Pippen) than LeBron did (Mo Williams) and Jordan had the better coach (Jackson > Brown). I have to give LeBron an edge because he lead his team to win more and lost less with worse support, and the stat gap is not large enough to push Jordan ahead. As far as competition goes I would need to see that LeBron had it easier vs his position matchups and vs opposing teams to move Jordan ahead. Jordan's team had the hardest foe for 1 series with the Bad Boys, but overall for that year I'm not seeing it as being harder for Jordan. Though I'm open to someone making a case for it.
I guess you could argue Jordan had more "skills" but those skills did not translate into more wins and the individual stats only a very small edge for him. "killer will" you can't prove this and we don't know what they really felt in their own mind. We only saw the emotions they displayed outwardly which don't prove who was better anyway.

I would honestly give wilt the edge he led his teams to way more wins than Bill Russell would have if he had wilts roster and wilt was snubbed from multiple MVPS due to the fact he was seen as the bad guy as back then the players were the ones voting for mvps, defensively both wily and Russell are arguably the best defenders of all time with Bill Russell averaged 7.7 blocks and 4 steals in all recorded block games and wilt chamberlain averaging 8.8 blocks and 4 steals but it's pretty clear wilt is the better shot blocker and of course offensively wilt is much better and is a better volume scorer than Bill Russell and wilt just has a more advanced skill set with the mid range jumper, post fade and the various dipper moves. Of course Bill Russell did have the better roster and got the better of wilt everytime they played as Bill Russell would keep wilts scoring 14 points below what he usually put up as Bill Russell again is one of the greatest if not the greatest defender in NBA history depending on how u see it.

Pippen? i can name 12 guys who were better than Pippen during Bulls run. one of them is Clyde Drexler. have you ever heard of Hakeem Olajuwon? how about two guys who were far and away better than Pippen *on the SAME team* - Penny Hardaway and Shaq. Bulls would have traded Pippen and a bunchload of draft picks for either one but it was impossible because Orlando would never do it. are you saying Pippen is better than Isiah Thomas? Pippen is not even better than Dominique. or Barkley. or Malone. or Payton. but hes equal to Shawn Kemp who the Bulls almost straight up traded for. would Bulls have gotten Payton straight up for Pippen? no. the Bulls would have to add bench players like a 3 point shooter Kerr or Hodges and draft picks to get him. have you heard of Ewing? David Robinson? Dikembe? you are dreaming if you think Pippen is better than any of them. just how "valuable" is Pippen when for 2 Bulls championship runs he didnt play well enough all season to make the All Star team. you would THINK a Top Ten player would at least be an All Star like DWade, Bosh, Love, Irving, and Anthony Davis were when they played with LeBron. yet you insist they were useless and over the hill
do you want to know the epitome of over the hill? *Rodman* a 37 year old Rodman who never made the All Star team all 3 years and was gotten on the cheap for a backup center. did you THINK it was a 22 year old Bad Boys Rodman who played with the Bulls instead of an over the hill 37 year old Rodman? i dont know. maybe you believe in time machines and Rodman teleported into the future to help the Bulls. by 1998 Rodman was so disinterested in playing basketball Phil had to bench him for part of the season and start Kukoc (who also NEVER made All Star team his ENTIRE career) do you think these two are a lot of help? Rodman averaged a whopping 8 rebounds per game in 1998. not much help
give Jordan all the help LeBron has had throughout his career and its guaranteed Jordan ends up with 10 rings. if he can win 6 rings with only one other All Star on his team, he will win more than 6 with 7 All Stars
give LeBron only Pippen for his entire career he winds up with zero rings. who us going to take the last shot. they are both not clutch and mentally weak when the game is on the line
its funny how you try to say LeBrons team mates were old and past thier prime while not mention they were Top 10 players in the league
and in the next sentence try to say a washed up Rodman and unreliable Pippen were superstars in thier prime
you DO know 1998 Bulls are STILL "the OLDEST NBA team to ever win a championship", right. they made Dirks 2011 team look like spring chickens

You can’t compare these guys. It’s all fantasy. They are the best players of their era. Can’t that be enough.

@@seanjuice9495 it’s all speculation. The game has changed so much. They never got to play each other. I prefer Jordan, but that’s just a personal preference.
