A touch of Silver Age DC in there, too. Carter Hall/Hawkman (his Golden Age version a reincarnated Egyptian prince whose costume seems influenced by the falcon-headed Horus) was an archeologist, who was plagued by an assistant groupie who was always getting into trouble a la Lois Lane. "Gee, Horus, your pop is swell" is not Stan Lee dialogue, but she's standing in front of a Kirby Celestial-scale being who should have reduced her to a puddle of terror. I love the poignant reaction of Isis at the sight of her husband appearing. A wonderful comic.
A Hy Eisman shout out! Hy was my lettering teacher a million years ago when I went to the Kubert school. One of the nicest guys ever. Hy is apparently still kicking at 93!
When you guys started talking about lettering I just noticed and thought to myself, why dont they do speech bubbles on covers anymore? Almost every cover through the 80s had speech bubbles on the cover. But on the newer books I haven't seen it for years. I like the old way better...
1963 once again showing us a little bit of magic and making us wonder what could have been it wasn't for legal battles and big egos... Definetely would love to see more from that team Ed´s ads for Red Room are becoming incresingly scary. Soon they will be like... "It's 10 pm... Do you know where your children are??"
Love these & happy I have two complete sets! Didn't know there was some truth to the monkey ad - this video is the first time I'm learning you could once REALLY order squirrel monkeys through the mail!! 😲
Loved these when they came out, and still do. They are such pitch-perfect love letters to the foundations, their inspirations. Great call on the "outsider" artist look. Fletcher Hanks indeed! You guys need to do a dive into the Fletcher-verse.
I'd love to see several iterations of these characters, beyond initial concept of Image 1999. Like, what was Image 2003 or Image 2013? It'd be like peering into another universe where these books were ongoing. Someone like Horus here would definitely have had a Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic style relaunch, probably with a black lead. But all of this aside, I love these overviews of these books!!!
Fun with Egyptology time. Horus is a great great grand-child of Ra, rather than a child. Ra begat Shu, Tefnut, Hathor, Sekhmet, Bastet, Satet, Anhur and Ma'at with his consorts Hathor, Sekhmet, Bastet and Satet (yeah the same ones, his own children). Shu begat Geb and Nut with his consort (and sister) Tefnut.. Geb begat Osiris, Isis, Set, Nephthys and Heru-ur with his consorts Nut (sister) and Tefnut (mother) Osiris begat Horus, and in some accounts Anubis with his consort (and sister) Isis It's incest all the way down. Horus only has two great grand parents, two great great grandparents for that matter, though his great great grandmother is also his great grandmother. I don't even know how the first female offspring of Ra came to be, since the whole situation requires that Ra impregnated one or more of his female offspring to produce his other offspring. How did the first one come about ? If you were worrying about whether this continued on with Horus you need not have furrowed your brow. Horus begat Ihy with his consort Hathor. Yep, his great-great-great aunt (and also great grandmother, maybe?) Thankfully Wikipedia has little to say about Ihy, so I don't have to find out which blood relative Ihy begat with. I'm not looking it up elsewhere, because shit's fucked up enough already.
Clearly linked to Aliester Crowley more so though, let’s be factual here, the Horus concept outside of strictly Egyptian contexts stems directly from him and his order of the golden dawn nonsense, has no other similarities except that both imagined deities were reimagined by satanists…if you’re not with God you’re against Him.
Alan Moore's 1963 was my earliest introduction to Silver Age Marvel. Loved Horus so much, it and Yu-Gi-Oh! kind of endeared me to Egyptian mythology

These videos are really making me wish there was more 1963. Great stuff👍

I love how Affable Al casually tells you in one panel that Horus's is a product of incest. This was a common practice during the time of the Pharoahs.

Never read these and have loved your videos on these. Thanks for sharing these!
This is great. I think I have an ashcan copy of Horus along w/the whole series.

Fun stuff! They really nailed it. Labor of love!
My great aunt had a cappucin monkey that would fling poo at anyone near by
Great stuff.
I wonder if Jack Kirby ever saw those 1963 comics...
He did Phantom Force for Image so maybe he did. Imagine seeing the 1963 characters drawn by Kirby!

Yeah this one is neat. I thought the character was hawkman.
I gotta hunt this down. You guys got any info on big bang comics also?
8:27 surely that's Moon Knight in the 3rd panel?
I had this issue at some point.. maybe still do?
My birthday is in may. I think I know what I’m getting myself XD
Hey, Jimmy Snuka! I just your zine video and I loved it! I’m going to hit some up!
1963

This is my least favorite 1963 because the Thor-esque dialogue is sluggish. Still very enjoyable for the art and ideas presented
