People forget how good the pre-Byrne Superman books could be at times, even though Curt Swan was not as dynamic as in his younger days. But the Super-books had Alan Moore stories like this one and the tremendous Marv Wolfman-Gil Kane run on Action Comics, plus the all-star talent on Superman # 400, which even had Steranko coming out of retirement to do a memorable story. In fact, DC had successfully already done a soft reboot before Byrne was ever hired, but it didn't sell because too many readers failed to give it a look. They missed out on some quality stuff!
I love the Justice League cartoon adaptation of this story. It's not difficult to see why this is one of the greatest Superman stories ever told- crazy emotional.

It's very interesting to look at this book in the aftermath of the coverage Ed & Tom did on the Death of Superman comic. I feel like the fight between Superman and Mongol in this book is so much better staged than the bloated, static fight with Doomsday. It just feels more epic and the stakes feel more real.
Hey, how about a commentary on that Captain Britain run by Moore and Davis? It would be great. I mean, there's a lot there that's worth a look. To mention only one thing: it is yet another fine example of Moore's abilitiy to tell a structured, compelling serialized story even as each individual chapter offers a limited page count.
That run is fantastic! People who only know about cheery Alan Davis need to check out his work here because it can be deeply disturbing. Probably one of the greatest Marvel stories ever and I mean that without hyperbole. I think the only reason it doesn't get talked about in the higher echelon as much is because, like most UK work, it's often OOP and simply not known to most readers.

That seems to be a singular example of Moore in early days trying to write a straightforward Marvel Comic. You can see the influence of Claremont's X-men. It definitely is worth an examination.

Some that jump to mind are Maxwell the cat, D.R. & Quinch, the Leviticus chapter in Outrageous Tales from the Old Testament, The Riddle of the Recalcitrant Refuse from Doc Stearn... Mr. Monster #3, Violator and Violator vs. Badrock, The Hasty Smear of My Smile in Hate #30 and the Jack B. Quick, First American and Splash Brannigan pieces from Tomorrow Stories.
This comic in particular is very well done.The story for it is just really good. I wonder if that type of story was done before that comics release? I was never was interested in the old mainstream comics but this one is good.
Would be cool to see coverage of an issue or two of the America's Best Comics stuff. There's a short story in issue 2 of Tomorrow Stories that will blow your mind.

The Supreme books, and the accompanying "Awesome Universe" would be interesting as discussion material, because it shows how Moore thought about constructing a line of knockoff books that had a better understanding of the source material than its custodians. As an extension on the Superman/Wonder Woman dynamic, I hope you'll consider the challenge of Moore's Twilight of the Superheroes story, which was perhaps too twisted for DC to pull the trigger on, though they did strip mine it of ideas for some lesser comics. It only exists as a proposal, easily accessible on the internet, but perhaps you could generate some visuals of your own. Moore paints a pretty vivid picture for you to be inspired by.
His Eddie Campbell collaborations - From Hell, Birth Caul or Disease of Language. Also some of his obscure stuff that isn't super expensive/rare like Light of thy Countenance & the BoJeffries Saga.

I've cited this story as why Robin is a viable character and not completely a silly throwback to a more quaint time. He exists to be the spoiler in Batman stories, the one you disregard and find out to your chagrin (if you're the villain) that you underestimated him. Batman has trained young adolescents (ruthless and morally ambiguous in their own right due to their stage in brain development) in hardcore urban warfare with an emphasis on using the environment to their advantage. If you only concentrate on the big scary guy dressed in dark colors, the kid you think is a nuisance will screw you up before you realize what's happened. Moore demonstrated this perfectly in this story.

Weird, when you talk about great tandems, I also thought about Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, despite only having read All Star Superman.
