I use Avast with a free firewall built into it. Avast hasn't been perfect though and it flagged my game Guardians of the Galaxy as malware along with some other false flags. I am probably going to switch to Bitdefender free version. My other question is what firewall would you recommend we pair with Bitdefender free version?

Brian, all A/V programs will affect PC system performance. And, BD is absolutely no exception. Tom's Guide states in the "Against" column in their recent, comprehensive review "Heavy background system load", which was just published 24 days ago. And, as also mentioned here in other posts, it does generate a lot of false/positives. It is also not easy to completely uninstall, if you find that you do not like it. My problem with this is the fact that they betrayed and scammed their free users by saying "We're discontinuing the free version, but here's a discount". That is so unbelievably scummy. If they had plans to return the free version, they should have just said so instead of this bait & switch-like scam of "here's a discount if you want to stick with us... we just won't tell you the free version will be coming back".
I stopped using them when they originally got rid of the free version. I switched to Windows Defender and haven't looked back; sure, it's not QUITE as feature heavy as Kaspersky and Bitdefender but at least I have fewer privacy concerns with it and it doesn't really take up much of your system resources.

Would be keen to know how much memory is consumed , impact on CPU run time in diffent modes (Avast for example hogs an ENORMOUS amount of memory and often drowns the CPu(s) in mysterious backgound processes at a high priority level, especially at boot time). Strange how many of these AF programs have similar looking GUIs. Would also like to know user base size, Avast boasts over 400 Million users most of these reporting back on new viruses which MUST be a plus point.

Used the one they offered before, unfortunately Bitdefender offered a payed version at a reasonable price (when they ended unlimited free version) BUT, sorry to say, Bitdefender couldn't simply accept payment by bank transfer (!) and as other noticed they just ended the free version all of a sudden, WITHOUT informing of the (New) free 3 month trial! The conclusion must be: They made a too good working Free-Version BUT now they want us to pay for their Antivirus instead. Scans are heavy for a USB containing a lot of files. Bitdefender only protects Google Chrome, Firefox and Edge Chromium. For Brave or other browsers, you'd need to add Bitdefender TrafficLight, Malwarebytes Browser Guard or similar protective extension.

Actually Windows Defender is a top ranking antivirus nowadays. He's spouting old days rhetoric, but with Win 10 and 11 that's over. You're right in that Bit Defender is bloatly. I had the total security package on my previous PC, but a year ago I bought a new state of the art gaming pc and decided not to install it anymore because it could be quite an annoyance now and again and hard to find what was going on. Up to now I haven't looked back. Advantage is that Defender comes with the firewall, so you'd have to keep using it if you go for the free package. And Defender uses the built in protection in Windows which is also much better than previous, especially in Win 11.
In short: the only reason to switch to Bit Defender IS the bloatware, otherwise I wouldn't bother with stressing your pc with something that's already on there and doesn't add anything.

Brian would you recommend turn off some features of windows defender to go along with the free version of Bitdefender or turn off every feature of windows defender and go only with the free version of Bitdefender? If it is the first choice what features would you keep on?
Note: I want the best way to have the best security possible but i also want to leave some performance for games

In the free version you get hardly anything but basic antivirus protection. I just tried it.

There is nothing you can do, Bitdefender won't allow any other firewall other than Windows Firewall !!

But does it actually work? I'd like to know of anyone (unbiased) that has had an issue arise from malware, ransomware, or similar that has Bitdefender installed and has had the software catch the problem. What anyone product says what it does is can only be taken with a grain of salt, unless there is 100% undeniable, certifiable statements made from actual users of the product.

I'm going to be honest, the usual critical notifications I get from this AV is when the certificates from a webpage aren't trustable, when BD blocks malicious URLs conections or when I enter a phishing site, so I've never had a malware issue cuz BD blocks it beforehand, I've been using it for 6 years now

Question by 2025 when windows 10 support ends would it be safer to use a full suit antivirus? What are the risks of using windows 10 after expiry if you using a full antivirus package if any? Fantastic channel your voice is calming content is brilliantly put together keep up the good work.
