Slightly off topic: There us one setting in Windows Security that literally warns that if one uses this feature, it may harm one's computer. Chalk one up for MS
It may be that it might stop legitimate software that isnt coded to modern security standards. Things have moved on, old software hasnt. SEHOP/ALSR/DEP etc.
Zone Alarm has always had an excellent free consumer version of their antivirus/firewall app. I have had it installed on all my PC's for over a decade, and it has always looked after my PC perfectly well! (not a company employee - just a happy customer!)

I'm a technician since 1996, so I've been around the block a few times. I used to be a master at manually removing viruses from peoples computers because I figured out where they hid. Be careful with Kaspersky too. My Kaspersky subscription was due for renewal last July 2022. I wanted to cancel my subscription, but I can't find their cancel subscription link, button, whatever in my Kaspersky account. I had to contact the customer service just to cancel my subscription. By the time they replied, the auto-renewal has already kicked in. I was so pissed I deleted my Kaspersky account. I'm betting this has to do with politics seeping into their business. For those who are still using Kaspersky and are subscribed to their auto renewal policy, check if you can cancel your subscription. It's stated in their FAQ that it's in your Kaspersky license settings, account settings, I kinda forgot because it was already a long time. But when I checked where the cancel button or link was supposed to be, I couldn't find any. After watching this vid, I'm kinda leaning into the idea that Kaspersky has become predatory ever since their illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Hi Brian, I noticed after a recent Microsoft feature update that applications, including websites are loading in the background instead of the foreground. Are you aware of this and is there a setting I can change to revert back to foreground loading?
Tip You can buy licenses for various programs at retail outlets often cheaper than the online or renewal version. As a personal rule putting my credit card details in the hands of others is to be avoided like the plague. This is because I subscribed to a news service for one month as a trial thinking that I’d only get access for a month, but every month they debited my card and I spent an entire day getting my bank to block it as fraud as there was no way to cancel the subscription. The links to cancel all went to a broken page and no email was answered and the only phone number was a pay number where you were billed ten dollars a minute.
Unfortunately autorenewals are getting more and more common and often are pain in a$$ to terminate. But there are two easy ways to avoid it. 1) create virtual card, pay with it and then cancel card (after payment goes through). 2) Pay with Paypal then go to paypal automatic payment list and cancel it there. After that they cant bill you with autorenewal. Btw on Paypal almost every payment get on automatic payment list which means if there is another "subscription" payment it goes through. Maybe good idea to review list time from time and remove/deactivate sites you dont use regularly.
Semi-scummy (borderline predatory) practices are common practice these days. ESCPECIALLY with those we are "intended* to trust. Avast/McAfee/Norton et al... are NOT an exception. Predation & Fear mongering only serves to increase distrust ~very dodgy~ from those that NEED this *kind* of protection the most. ~This should NOT be the way~ !!!!!!!! thanks for sharing!
My Norton license is going to expire. I want to switch. I had thought of Kaspersky but I am finding that Google search isnlisting many guides about it being restricted in US. I don't want to spend so much for Norton again and get only 1 device protection. What to do?
Here is a counter-measure against these charge, use a virtual card to stop auto-renewals. Check with your bank or card issuer to find out how to set up a virtual card.
Thanks for your caution. I'm avoiding using my credit card for payment but most Security Softwares are online & dealing the same way. I prefer to buy them in store but not many options available. I'm stuck & confused, I don't know wether to use security software or just not at all or else, which to choose. I'd be greatful for any suggestions. 🙏🙏🙏
Ive been using Avast for almost 20 years , i have noticed that over last 5 years they have started with there pop adds , but i just close them and ignore them ,
I don't think TotalAV makes any driver updaters (but I could be wrong). However, generally, 3rd party driver updaters are shady software and generally unneeded.
Been using ESET since day one, that is def the one I recommend to friends when they ask me. I see you also use it too. I find it to be much less on resources then others as well.
So many antivirus programs block other antivirus programs that it's quite alarming, as you said, but web browsers do the same. It's a tug of war and we don't know whom to trust any longer ;-( What's the most secure (truly and honestly harmless) AV you use? THX
LAst week they found that AVG / Avast are doing strange things: selling your browser data to Google and others etc. They did that for years, and maybe still are....
btw bit defender was really letting me down with their attitude and i had to switch antivirus. They are very aggressively promoting their VPN software, even if you uninstall it, it magically re appears after some time. I let them know and they said it was some kind of bug that for many years they cannot fix. Well, how do you call a program that installs software without your permission with a goal to make money from you?? It's very unethical what they are doing and i consider their software as malware.
I've been using AVG Internet Security and have tried out their AVG Tune Up and AVG Driver Updater. Well...the year is up and they want their renewal payment. AVG also nags you to buy their other products, which I'm getting tired of. I've been annoyed lately when their Web Shield tool wouldn't let me sign out of my Amazon account one day, claiming some sort of bad thing trying to happen, so...I turned that tool off so I could log out. Of course, I got some whining about having turned it off, though I left it off for a couple days. No scans ever found any issues. It wouldn't let me sign into Amazon (I had been using the same exact URL for years with no trouble before) or out of, until I shut down that tool and left it off for a while. I turned it back on just to see if it would happen again, though it hasn't...yet. So, maybe it was due to some update or something just getting hung up somewhere. AVG today blocked something that Corel Paintshop 2022 Pro needs, though I can't seem to find it listed anywhere (it was a pop-up notification AVG put up then did away with, so I didn't have time to find out what exactly they blocked -- I didn't have Paintshop running today). Strange. I also have Malwarebytes installed and it's been working fine, though...today it blocked a couple of AVG's files that it shouldn't have (as far as I know). Trying to add something to their "Allow" list is rather cumbersome and could be streamlined better. Being retired and living in Alaska where prices for things are higher than in the Lower 48, my funds only stretch so far, so I may hold off on renewing anything for a while and just stick with basics. I don't spend a lot of time on the Internet and don't go poking around on risky sites. I also get a bit upset every time AVG wipes out something for Firefox every week so that has to "update" (read: reinstall whatever AVG got rid of), and I also end up having to use 2FA to get back into several sites (2FA has it's own risks -- check out Rob Braxman's channel on that).
I currently have Norton , The renewal time has come, $130 that's is described as Norton Life Lock this is something I know nothing about , did not ask for it, I've been a Norton Anti virus user for over 10 years the cost has gone up , should I change and what do you recommend?
If something is free..... watch out. That being said I am using what my ISP provides for free... rebranded F-Secure. Along with the built-in MS Defender and licensed Malwarebytes... And around 25 lists of bad sites from the internet, downloaded on my router that blocks the family from getting to known bad sites along with an IDS + some education of the family and so far so good. But this stuff sounds like a shake-down...
I want an antivirus suite that: 1.) Stops every intrusion dead in it's tracks before "whatever" can cause any damage. 2.) When searching the web - I want it to let me know legitimate web sites with a marker. 3.) Ad Blocker, Pop Up Blocker. 4.) Isolation and encryption for financial transactions. 5.) Not a rip-off when it comes to price. 6.) Ease of use and Management. Meaning it doesn't become stupid when I go about my business and if there is a concern it shows a notification and does not just prevent functionality without notification - the most useless task in trouble shooting is wasting time figuring out your virus software is the problem. 7.) Minimal Use of computer resources. 8.) Is not an ad generating POC. So yeah - I use Kaspersky Total Security. For $180 ish I get two years worth of license on up to 5 computers. That's about $18 bucks a year per computer. I think for $80 you get the same thing for 3 computers. Been with them for a long time (decade or more). Great Video Thanks for taking the time.
Free Kaspersky for me. Very, very rarely rears its head to sell on for the full featured version. In fact it's so rare, I can't really remember if it even does!
I have serious doubts that it will actually protect better than windows defender. In my experience when they push that hard to get you to pay for it, usually it means that it is only barely better than intentionally downloading a virus.
When I rise to power it shall be illegal. Also, all operating systems will be REQUIRED to secure their stuff without a third party program being necessary. Internet security is too serious to be treated as a capitalistic revenue system.
There's far too much of this with many things, it's common for people to get caught out with a monthly renewal with many services offering free trials, even this should be made very clear in my opinion, not just in the small print, but trying to trick people into paying an overpriced annual renewal with the details deliberately hidden away definitely should be stopped.
Sir i installed an m2 kingston ssd 1tb,and iddle it gets to 56 degrees,do I need to worry and buy a heatsink or it would be fine, also if i need a heatsing should I peal the sticker off the ssd?
56 degrees on idle seems a little high to me so I'd buy a heatsink for it, most motherboards now come with preinstalled heatsinks, if yours doesn't I suggest buying one. And no, don't peel off the sticker from your SSD, as this will more than likely void your warranty.
Norton AV is becoming a pain in the neck too. I'm trying to move to another AV, and I don't know if I should use Windows Defender only. Any recommendations to replace Norton AV? Thanks for this video. 🤔
I installed it (paid my subscription), and almost imediately noticed a total slowdown of my PC. Excel and Outlook took so long to load I would give up and either walk away and come back in 10 minutes (yes you heard right... 10 minutes for Excel and Outlook to load). The other annoying thing was constant ads wanting you to upgrade and throw more money their way even though I just spent and arm and a leg on their yearly sub. As soon as I completely removed TotalBS, errh I mean TotalAV, Excel and Outlook would load up instantly!!!!
i have the same problem with AVG antivirus as well.i am already their premium account but they still try to dig money out of me with avg VPN, driver updater and more bull crap like that
I think the windows defender is good enough for regular work unless you go into dodgy sites or youre a total beginner. I have been using Kaspersky since 2015 when I first got a PC and was a beginner. It was a windows 8 system. I upgraded my system last month to windows 11. I am still using Kaspersky. So, stick to one antivirus you have used before or just use defender.
defender is shit, every malware detected by it doesn't pose any real threat, the real malware causi g harm is always tested on defender first so it becomes literally useless to anyone with bad intents.

...and for me back in the day - it didn't stop anything and my god was it a memory eating monster.
Unchecky for the win!
Thanks Brian, I have just been through over a 30 minute chat getting my account stopped, what a joke... I have cancelled my credit card just in case as I don't trust them at all. Thanks again I'm one that got caught BIG time!
Great work Brian on your very helpful pc channel👍😉 been following you for many many years 🤗💞as they say if it's too good to be true it probably isn't, and there's no such thing as a free ride!👎😞
Thanks for sharing.
Which setting is that, please? 🙏
Can't remember/moved back to Bitdefender(paid) @@natlee5051
You run eset too.
That's what I use , great protection.
I was a user of Norton for many years until they went with no upfront trial.
Zone Alarm has always had an excellent free consumer version of their antivirus/firewall app. I have had it installed on all my PC's for over a decade, and it has always looked after my PC perfectly well! (not a company employee - just a happy customer!)
Most companies tell you upfront that it's a trial period. They don't say free and then inform you that it's a trial period.
There is a company named Gen Digital. There products are Norton, Avast, LifeLock, Avira, AVG, ReputationDefender and CCleaner. I used to use Avast and it was great, but once Gen Digital aquired the they turned into a totally obnoxious upselling tactics. IMO their marketing tactics are unethical.
I'm sticking with basic Kaspersky & Hitman Pro Alert, I haven't had a problem for years.
Will you make a video on Hitman Pro Alert please?
Defender is one of the best anti virus software there is. It used to be a joke but that's no longer the case. I have it backed op with Malwarebytes and it has never found any malware that Defender didn't catch
Do you have a separate 3rd party firewall?
@@annother3350 No
defender is literally useless nowadays, every malware developer tests for it, if it doesn't pass defender they don't even release the malware.
@@fss1704 I work in IT support and most gangs have dumped using malware for getting money. It's too costly and time consuming. It's easier to have a call centre and get people to install Teamviewer! You say Defender is useless but 10 years ago I was cleaning up 5 or 6 machines a week before Defender was standard. Now I get maybe 2 machines a year if that. Adware maybe, not 'malware'. I add on Unchecky and the machines stay clean. As I mentioned Teamviewer is the most malicious thing out there.
@@jabezhane Some of the technology site's that rate antivirus and malware products put Defender on the top 10 lists.
A good informative video, and I notice you don't comment on trustpilot.....well we all have our own opinions about trustpilot, but anyway a good video and well presented.
A prime example of moral bankruptcy. Thanks for the great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Keeping educated on the latest and not going to the risky side for 30 years. No issues. My windows a/v thinks I'm boring and have no work for it.
That's sad. It means you missed the 15 years that the internet was the wild west.
I'm a technician since 1996, so I've been around the block a few times. I used to be a master at manually removing viruses from peoples computers because I figured out where they hid. Since the introduction of built in Windows virus protection I, and all my client base, my whole household, have never used anything else. Guess what? No viruses.
You figure it out.
no detected virus, that's even worse, now you trust stuff that's basically the first thing anyone making virus tests and you think you have no virus. if it doesn't passes defender you're shit and probably isn't doing malware, i use another antivirus and if it doesn't pass defender and passes another antivirus i assume that it isn't a virus, never being wrong, but i catched a lot of shit defender didn't get that would definetly being harm.
so we are 2 with the same opinion.... toke my master degree in 2001 in IT... and since Windows defender was released... no antivirus at all on my personal computers...
My computer did get hacked through using Windows defender & caused an entire freeze & Blue Kiss of death screen.
I researched it, very difficult, until on Microsoft's website stated they cause it.
I'm too concerned about using my computer, because got hacked.
I've sourced many Antivirus & firewall security but too confusing & too many contractual invasions etc etc & I just don't know what to choose anymore, but I don't trust Microsoft Defender anymore.
Any suggestions, please?
🙏🙏🙏
Trouble with windows defender its poor with ransomware it found the ransomware ok but to late it had done the damage
Tip
You can buy licenses for various programs at retail outlets often cheaper than the online or renewal version.
Hey Brian do we really need any antivirus beside Windows defender?
Yes you do
The default security program doesn't do enough for me to protect the system or update on the regular
@@prodigys9823 Thanks for telling me ❤️
Unfortunately autorenewals are getting more and more common and often are pain in a$$ to terminate.
Thanks for the great video and research you have done this video
I down loaded this AV, and when i kept getting the pop ups like you were getting , i uninstalled it, and felt much better for doing it
Try avast
I remember seeing this software on a video called how mush malware can you get from fake download buttons
I remember scanning my laptop with malware bytes and totalav would always pop up, once I deleted it no other detections popped up
Thanks for the info Brian!
Thanks for warning us! Love from Bangladesh🇧🇩
What to do?
Free Avast also uses scare tactic popup ads to try and get you to upgrade to a paid version, but at least they give you a free version that works.
Thank you. This is very helpful.
I personally use norton ,and have done for years ,i have not had any issues as of yet

Norton products have declined in effectiveness in my opinion and prior usages of the software
Here is a counter-measure against these charge, use a virtual card to stop auto-renewals. Check with your bank or card issuer to find out how to set up a virtual card.
Thanks for sharing this!
My pleasure!
Sounds to me like a new form of ransom ware! Well done for calling them out
I’ve been in this line of work for over forty years. Major advice: Be VERY careful sharing your credit card number. Auto-renewal will kill you!

Ive been using Avast for almost 20 years , i have noticed that over last 5 years they have started with there pop adds , but i just close them and ignore them ,
🙂 that totalav program looks very similar to that software that helps you to find and install missing or updated Drivers? Is it the same company?
I don't think TotalAV makes any driver updaters (but I could be wrong). However, generally, 3rd party driver updaters are shady software and generally unneeded.
Been using ESET since day one, that is def the one I recommend to friends when they ask me. I see you also use it too. I find it to be much less on resources then others as well.
35 million have have downloaded it. What they don't say 35 million have uninstalled it.
Maybe some companies try to limit competition be tagging others software as problematic....try testing several companies to see who they target...
So many antivirus programs block other antivirus programs that it's quite alarming, as you said, but web browsers do the same. It's a tug of war and we don't know whom to trust any longer ;-( What's the most secure (truly and honestly harmless) AV you use? THX
From my own experience Negative reveiws can give you pretty good insight on the product. Positive reveiws may not have all the information needed.
I hate ads which tell you "download x for free" and have no details about how you are downloading a free TRIAL, not a free program.
Thank you for your professional opinions. What about Trend Micro? Is it reliable? for both desktop and android mobile?
I currently have Norton , The renewal time has come, $130 that's is described as Norton Life Lock this is something I know nothing about , did not ask for it, I've been a Norton Anti virus user for over 10 years the cost has gone up , should I change and what do you recommend?
Great video as usual
If something is free..... watch out. That being said I am using what my ISP provides for free... rebranded F-Secure. Along with the built-in MS Defender and licensed Malwarebytes... And around 25 lists of bad sites from the internet, downloaded on my router that blocks the family from getting to known bad sites along with an IDS + some education of the family and so far so good. But this stuff sounds like a shake-down...
Oh yes, may sometimes get one free from your bank too
It's more than a shake down. It's borderline malware. If it doesn't let you uninstall, it's no different than some fake AV from the Win7 era.
I want an antivirus suite that:
1.) Stops every intrusion dead in it's tracks before "whatever" can cause any damage.
Saying something's free only to have it be a trial is a dick move.
Free Kaspersky for me. Very, very rarely rears its head to sell on for the full featured version. In fact it's so rare, I can't really remember if it even does!
Kaspersky is one of the best AV
@@Britec09 I think is the best for removing threats/terminating but not scanning

@@DevilbyMoonlight I've been using Kaspersky Premium for 7 months, and it is very good.
@@DevilbyMoonlight What AV do you use?
I love Kaspersky. The free version has a LOT of protection and you don't get harassed with ads!
Years of experience has taught me Nod32, Quad9 for DNS in router and also for all devices and Ublock origin add blocker on all browsers.
Not that I was considering replacing bitdefender, but still good to know.
Ive installed it and ran a scan and im stressing out i havent payed or made and account am i safe ive reseted my pc
Why do people seek other options than windows defender, i don't understand. It's installed by default & is updated regularly.
Kaspersky
UBlock filter blocks download as riskware as well.
I don't click dodgy links and don't visit dodgy sites - I have found windows defender to be adequate -
I installed it (paid my subscription), and almost imediately noticed a total slowdown of my PC.

Norton is doing the same way. when i purchase the anti virus program. i waited for two weeks after it expired before uninstall it.
I use for many years Bitdefender Ultimate Security, and their password manager, works very well and is lightweight. On my systems, which still includes core2quad CPUs, i7, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X. And 2 Linux machines. It's also integrated in my NAS. I'm satisfied with Bitdefender, i can use it on 10 machines, included 2 iOS devices.
