Tatiana has said she had no formal training. She learned to growl by going outside and screaming at cars. Probably not the most healthy approach but it worked for her.

Was going to post this myself, halfway through video during the "we forget how to make some sounds because we only practice our speaking voice" analysis. I feel one of the important facts here is that she recognized flaws and began improving her craft. Talent and self discovery.

@@Smido83 That’s a really musically ignorant statement. Multiple voice parts is just normal composition, not “digital shenanigans.” She sings all the parts herself and it’s not like they’re juiced up with autotune or a bunch of studio effects.

"She was too stunned to speak" ... Believe me, 9 out of 10 of us, especially when it comes to reactions to this song, are here for these very moments. And even if the big surprise moment may have been missing compared to others, these 9 out of 10 certainly had fun in the end. I at least did enjoy it, as I have in the past with other videos from you. :)
I don't know if I've said it before, but I'm far away from being a singer and know zero to nothing about the subject, but I like listening to your explanations. Your friendly, easy-going style and probably also your experiences from the theatre make you come across as very likeable, not too strict, yet very informative. I really like that and therefore "thank you" that you still decided to listen to this song in full length and share your video with us. :)

I trained as a classical trumpet player in my youth and I'm far beyond my teenage angst and anger, but I appreciate talent and skill. The time signature changes, musician skill and vocal techniques of this song are a pleasant change from the run of the mill pop hits of today.
Jinjer is a Ukrainian band who was forced to relocate to a different part of Ukraine back when Russian-backed separatists broke their home region away from Ukraine in 2014. The male members were initially required to stay in Ukraine in case of a draft when Russia invaded this year (they're out and on tour now). Their song "Home Back" was written about the 2014 experience, but it's sadly still very relevant and worth a listen and/or reaction.
As always, great reaction. Thank you.

@@JenniferGlatzhofer "Home Back" official music video is a powerful piece of art in itself which very much compliments the heavy lyrical subject matter of the song. As someone with a musical theater background, I think you'd appreciate this video even if the music isn't quite up your alley. There's plenty to chew on vocally, as well. Be forewarned that much of the song is quite technical & quite heavy progressive metal, with an amazing switch of genre right in the middle, which I suspect you'd quite enjoy.

Watching these reactions is my hobby!! There are 2 points in this song that I closely watch and "judge" the reactor. First is the obvious, the first scream/growl, the reactors are so shocked & stunned. Second is at the end when Tatiana instantly switches from the scream/growl to her belting clean voice, which for me is the highlight of Tatiana's performance, so the reactor's response is whether they get a like.

Hi Jennifer, I just discovered this on my recommended videos and I love your reaction and review. It’s always entertaining seeing first time reactions to Jinjer and Tatiana’s vocals. 😄 Elizabeth Zharoff of The Charismatic Voice channel did a great interview with Jinjer’s vocalist, Tatiana Schmalyuk, in which she described how she taught herself how to do the scream/growl vocals, first by screaming outside on the outskirts of her town (in Eastern Ukraine) and then by screaming in her pillow so she wouldn’t disturb anyone. I’ve been a musician since I was a young child, but I was never into metal music with scream/growl vocals until I heard Jinjer and another female fronted metal core band, Spiritbox, several months ago and now I’m a huge fan of both bands due to their interesting songwriting, excellent musicianship and the fantastic vocals of Tatiana and Courtney from Spiritbox. They both have the ability to instantly transition back and forth from beautiful clean singing to some of the best scream/growl vocals I’ve heard. I would highly recommend checking out the official video for Jinjer’s song Wallflower. It’s a very well written song with a cool vibe and 80-90% of the song has beautiful clean vocals from Tatiana.

Tati is basically self-taught. Rumor has it that she used to go out and learned to do her growl over traffic noise. Her inspiration comes from a female artist named Otep who pretty much pioneered female vocal distortions. If you'd like, check out her music. I would recommend the song "Blood Pigs". Otep and her band frequently take song structure and throw it out the window

Great reaction. The band is fantastic, and Taiana is a vocal goddess. She had a few vocal lessons and started singing when she was 8. When she was 15 of 16 a friend played her Otep and it was the first time she heard a female singer growl. She was determined to learn it and worked on it for years while singing in bands. She is such a master of her voice now she can switch word to word. As some others had mentioned below you need to hear her live. Next try "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019. You'll really enjoy it!

Tati uses MOSTLY false fold scream in this song, but she also hits some fry screams as well.
Most singers choose one or the other, especially because the volume levels can be quite different.
She is truly magnificent to be able to do both styles so well and keep them both fairly close in volume.

I hate fry screaming lol, soo rough on the throat and soo unhealthy to do. I can false fold scream for hours but fry screaming will kill me in 20 minutes, I don't know how bands who only fry scream can get through an entire show. not to mention they're literally putting a time limit on the band by ruining their vocal chords lol

They are an amazing band, and you will not be disappointed listening/reacting to their other videos/songs. Enjoy! She was turned on to this vocal approach by other female singers that could already vocalize this way- and then LOTS of trial and error/practice!

This song might as well be tailor made for reaction channels, with both the music and clean vocals lulling you into a state of calm at the start, before slapping you in the face with the switch.
A few more switches to get used to it, then in the final verse she switches so quickly and adds so much more power to it that it leaves you a little stunned.
It really is the perfect introduction to Tatiana, which is probably why it's such a popular request.

  • @Fenthule

As a person who has mastered the kinds of vocals Tati does in this song, it absolutely does feel like two different techniques. And ironically, it's singing cleans that hurts my throat over time more than the growls do lol. I'll give you a basic tutorial of how to try and get that growl in a healthy manor. Make sure to keep your throat soft by drinking water often when practicing.
step 1) exasperate like you've just sunk into the couch after a long day. That rumble in the back of your throat is what you're after.
step 2) try and sustain that reverberation by pushing air out through your diaphragm. This part is where you can hurt yourself if you're engaging your main vocal chords. If it starts to get uncomfortable or hurt, stop and rest. I wouldn't push sessions past 10 minutes at first.
step 3) once you can sustain the basic growl for a bit you just need to learn how to modulate it's pitch, which is a combo of vowel control, air pressure, added vocal fry (that's how she says DEATH)
and little bit of muscle control in the back of the throat.
bonus fun fact, if you can learn to do this technique well it's also pretty much the same technique used for subharmonics which is how I can hit E1's on occasion lol

They were actually playing tonight in Derbyshire, Bloodstock Open Air, their only date in the UK this year. Next year they will tour in the UK a full month in march.
They have plenty of catchy songs to discover that you might even like, 'better' than Pisces, which is mostly chosen as a first introduction to the group because there is such a change during that it takes the listener off guard. For instance "Perennial (live at wacken)", "I Speak Astronomy", "Judgement & Punishment", "Vortex", "Wallflower".

Loved it! You were right to hold off until now, so you’re really established as a knowledgeable reactor. This isn’t your wheelhouse, so we know not to expect you to explain that demon voice, but you can talk with some authority about what is happening with her voice as a whole.
And yeah, that demon thing is kind of terrifying. I’ve gone on to listen to some of their other music, but honestly I just am not into metal. I really like this song, distortions and all-love the constantly evolving time signatures (that drummer is a beast-I guess this video was made to introduce him, as he was their newest member at the time). Tati has a beautiful voice, nice range, great belt, love that kind of husky timbre, but honestly it’s the crazy distortions that make her so unique. Basically everybody in this group is extraordinary, even if I’m not that into their chosen style of music.
Anyway, I’m glad you did eventually come around to this-loved your insights!

Jen, you should know that your impersonations of Tati's growled inflections and little aspirate nuances are everything! While I doubt there's another Jinjer reaction in your immediate future, I highly recommend that you find 5 minutes to check out Perennial live at Wacken just to see how fast she can flip-flip from growl to belt and back again in a proper live setting. While she's jumping around lol. Basically what we are seeing here is nothing in comparison. Many thanks!

Again, I thought I had commented but, what a great reaction to my favorite Jinjer song! I only wish Tati would sing this song as in this session. It is such a classic and shock. • @Kipperbob

Take a look at how low bass singers get subharmonics, it'll give you a better idea of where this vocal style comes from. You can learn to use the false fold for a low growl and the singing voice will engage similtaniously with the not a 5th above to create a power chord. That's why it sounds so powerful.

As you listen more you will also appreciate the band talent around her - then you hear the way they mesh together so well - then you realize they are fantastic and why haven't you listened sooner. They shine in live performances - check out Perennial live at Whacken to see her stage presence and realize 30-40 minutes into a set she can still do all the ranges she has. Jinjer really is something different out there in the metal world today. 🤘

It is always troubling to me whenever a reactor feels the need to apologize for not liking this or that. I find it impossible that with all the genres of music and all the different bands within those genres making different sounds that somebody would like it all. But sadly that is what we, your audience demand. "Play my song and like it damnit" For whatever it's worth I always applaud you guys who are willing to step away from your comfort zone and experience something new, like it or not. 👏👏👏

... yeah, Jinjer and Tatiana are doing different things; wonderful, wonderful things, but different things :)
also, yah! another reactor who understands that Tati's belt is an entirely different (3rd) voice
    yeah, it's all epic

  • @joeparker9516

Tati is a beast! The thing that amazes me is how clear her annunciation is when she does the growls in this particular song. My initial thought was DEMONIC activity, but after watching a few other reactors I understand the mechanics of how this is affected better. Kudos to Julia Nilon for part of that. Jenn, you are and will always be one of my top 5 reactors. I believe every woman needs to develop this talent, if nothing else you can imagine the effectiveness in handling children or a spouse. Enjoy the mental image.... Love you and your channel, Jenn.

I am actually quite new to harsh vocals myself. But the best way to try it yourself...without hurting yourself, is to make a long 'O' with your mouth, but slowly clear your throat to make the sound. You can play around with that feel and make all sorts of new sounds, they say not to try to add words yet, as you will likely use your true folds and hurt something. :)
If you get really adventurous I would check out one of Lorna Shore's one take performances. I'd say "And I Return to Nothingness" on the Channel "The Will Ramos." The reason I like the one takes is you get to watch him up close, "singing" live, so you get to see all the facial and mouth movements you love to see, but with new sounds behind them.

Though not a live performance, I would suggest listening to their track I Speak Astronomy. It's quite progressive musically, there is a higher ratio of clean vocals to growls and you can hear Tatiana doing some epic high belts at the end (note: there is a false end to the song).

This was my first time watching you, great reaction and explanations! Since you are trained in musical theater I’d highly recommend watching Iron Maiden doing Hallowed be thy Name live in 83 I think. That was when Bruce Dickinson was at the height of his “human air raid” powers. His approach reminds me a lot of musical theater. Ooh, the performance of Scared of the Dark in Brazil could be right out of a Broadway production, check that out too. He’s older in that but still great.
