Some people may think lighting lighters at concerts back then was "dorky"...
imagine being a teenager in the 1980s and seeing Journey live, hearing Steve Perry singing, "Faithfully" with thousands of lighters lit up across the arena.
That was a sight to see...
I saw Journey in Chicago when I was 17 and that was a concert memory that I will never, ever forget.

Journey is definitely one of the great American bands that reached their peak of success during the early 80's. "Faithfully" is one of their best songs. When I think of the great lead singers of rock bands, Steve Perry of Journey is one of the first names that comes to mind. Incredible singer. My favorite power ballad from them that I recommend you try is "Open Arms". For something more rocking and up-tempo from Journey I recommend you try is "Don't Stop Believing"

I am a base player and i travelled doing 300 shows in a year. rarely was home. Fact is i was a roady setting things up for the band but because the base player had a drug problem i actually played in about 80 shows. I only did it one year because if i did it more i would of been divorced and i would never want that for my two daughters. I toured with a nameless band from jan 1989 and did the final show new years eve of 1989. I loved touring but i didnt want to lose my little family. great memories overall though

Fun fact: Neil played guitar for Carlos Santana around age 15!! “Only The Young” (my favorite song!), “Feeling That Way/Anytime”, “Lights”, “Wheel In The Sky”, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, “Stone In Love”, “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’”, “Be Good To Yourself”, “When You Love A Woman” are a couple of their hits!! 🤟🤟🤟

    Good evening, ladies....
I was a huge Journey fan back in college, so much so that my roomie and others on my hall hid my albums for awhile! LOL
I was happy to see that towards the end of your reaction how poignant you were in recognizing how this song can not only be about touring musicians (even though it's obviously written and performed by touring musicians.) Having served in the Army for 23 years with several deployments and am now working security at an overseas embassy I've experienced some of the parallels with this song's lyrics. Sometimes one can get choked up listening to this. You hit it right on the head that not only for those at home, but those who are away also sometimes feel a level of loneliness that can only be remedied by returning home.
    This, I know from experience.
    Great reaction, ladies. Thank you!

    • @generationgapreacts
      @generationgapreacts  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you Michael! Yes, so many people can relate to the song's message of being away from loved ones for an extended period of time. We deeply appreciate you and your service, and continued work overseas. Mom is an Army Brat and understands the struggles of watching her dad leave for deployment and wondering if she'd ever see him again.

Mr. Steve Perry tragically left music for many years leaving the excellent musicians of Journey without a lead singer. Steve's voice and singing is impossible to recreate. The musicians from Journey tried for years to replace Steve. He didn't marry until late in life he just lost his desire for singing. His return in recent years was after the loss of his wife, a wonderful woman he married even knowing she had a terminal disease. Mrs. Perry urged her husband to find his voice and he did after his grieving for her and it is a fantastic album without his old band.
Thank You for reacting and enjoying Steve Perry and Journey.

We would stay out in the parking lot and get our happy on and go in late just to Miss Journey . Then they changed singers and the Infinity album came out and and they were huge !! This sublime song from Journey echoes the feeling from a Nobel Laureate in poetry with the following lines of "life's journey."
With the drawing of this Love and the voice of this Calling
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
    Through the unknown, unremembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
    Is that which was the beginning;
At the source of the longest river
The voice of the hidden waterfall
And the children in the apple-tree
Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half-heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea.
    Quick now, here, now, always--
    A condition of complete simplicity
    (Costing not less than everything)
And all shall be well and
All manner of thing shall be well
When the tongues of flames are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.
The Little Gidding is the last of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets. For a good biographical site on Eliot and some analysis of his poetry, go to the Academy of American Poet's website.

Iron Maiden found a simple solution for touring. Since they had their own 757 then 747-400, they simply brought their spouses and kids with them! This way they could keep their touring schedule and spend time with family in between shows. Not sure why other bands had separation issues like this.

Glad this made it to TH-cam!. I’m being lazy and copying and pasting my comment on this video from Patreon: Thank you for reacting to this incredible song! It is my favorite Journey song. Everything from Steve Perry's powerful voice to the keyboards to the guitar to the lyrics. Great song! Many years ago, I used to play one of their songs on the piano from the Infinity album. I can't remember if it was Anytime or The Winds of March. I really liked both songs. This album came out in 1977. I played it around that time period. I am very rusty on the piano and keyboard. I played the guitar as a second instrument. I should really get back into it. My mother's side of the family is saturated with musical talent from my mother to my grandfather to my great grandfather and so on. My grandfather, Jake Hart, had a group called Jake Hart and friends. They mostly played in his home state of North Carolina.

Didn't matter, this one is timeless and ingrained in your soul. Beautiful. I agree with some of the other posts that Steve Perry has one of the greatest and most recognizable voices in rock history. Neal Schon was a guitarist for Santana. He and Greg Rolie quit Santana. They founded Journey. Santana, Journey and I were born in San Francisco. I grew up listening to both bands.
Faithfully was written by Jonathan Cain. He is on piano and synth. This was released in 1983.
Drums by Steve Smith. 🥁 Same year, 1983. Faithfully song sounds like Heaven. Written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. BA needed a drummer to record Heaven. His drummer Mickey Curry was not available because he was required by a prior contract to play with another musician. Steve Smith happened to be in town, New York. Thus, Heaven sounds like Faithfully.
Steve Perry was the lead singer.
The lead singer now is Arnel Pineda. Neal Schon discovered AP on the Internet!
In 1984, the late Prince called Jonathan Cain to have him listen to Purple Rain because he thought it sounded like Faithfully and didn’t want to step on any toes. JC said Purple Rain was inspired by Faithfully but not copied. JC gave a big thumbs up! 👍RIP Prince.
Suggested videos: 1 Journey performs Open Arms live. 2 Steve Perry sings Foolish Heart 3 Bryan Adams sings Heaven.

The keyboardist Jonathan Cain wrote the entire song for his then wife. Unfortunately, they ended up divorcing sometime in late 80's.

Watching this video makes me wonder if bassist Ross Valory told Steve Perry what Deep Purple's legendary keyboard player Jon Lord (RIP) told then new arrival and future Whitesnake superstar David Coverdale: "Only one person in Deep Purple is allowed to have a moustache, and that person is me!"

If anyone is wondering why they can't see a live stream, it may be that you need to use a VPN and access Gap's channel from OUTSIDE of North America. e.g. Can't get Momma Gap's Birthday stream in Canada or the USA; go to Germany and it 'magically' pops up. This may also be true for more than just live streams.

Steve Perry experienced burnout... He just could not do it anymore. He's human like all of us. But.. Journey gave us alot of great music during the early 70's and 80's...
