The red violin is a VERY GOOD movie. I understand why you’d avoid a violin movie but give this one a chance because it’s one of those high high level movies.
The reaction I heard from musicians after Whiplash was they never would have put up with that, especially jazz musicians. They all said they would have just walked out.
I really liked Rays take on this. There are people who would be like that as teachers and also the ones to take it as students. Definitely not in high end school of past twondecades, but before that? It was quite the reality. I got smacked on my finger quite a few times in the 90's by the piano teacher.
As far as jazz directors go, they do not typically “conduct” the group by providing rhythm past the first few beats. Jazz, like you are explaining of group cohesion, is very much based on listening to each other as opposed to watching a conductor. The rationale, I believe, is a good Jazz ensemble should be a well oiled machine not needing direction.
To be fair for "The Pianist" you said that the piano wasn't out of tune - but the piece the man was playing was Chopin Ballade in G minor and the final note did sound... well like an F#. So not only was the piano almost half-step out of tune, but the man probably played the correct notes as well :D
I recall seeing an interview with Adrien Brody where he stated he actually learned to play all of the music for The Pianist so they could film his actual hands playing with no double or cuts. That's why the audio syncs so perfectly, he is actually playing the piece (even though I think his playing wasn't used for the final audio).
What’s interesting is, for Whiplash, JK Simmons actually has a background in music, got a degree in music even and played guitar in coffee shops, & Miles Teller began drum lessons when he was 15 and still plays. They rlly casted that film rlly well
Funfact: the little kid in "the red violin" actually played the violin in the movie and became the solo violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of only 20 years. He now is a conductor and violinist working with very well known and high class orchestras in Europe :)
Yes, also the tuning on the Baroque instrument is tuned differently, instead of it tuned as 440, which is the Modern way of tuning, the Baroque Violin is tuned to 415. So yes. Anyways, great stuff!
For the red violin they used CGI to put Joshua bells left hand onto the scenes. He did the music and consulted for the movie. Beautiful original score. Highly recommend watching a really great movie :)
Fan fact about The Pianist Movie: Adrian Brody has almost starved himself TO DEATH while preparing for the role of Wladyslaw Szpilman. Great video as always ❤.
I'm a violin maker, and I was at an auction 5 or 6 years ago where one of the prop violins from The Red Violin was sold. It was totally playable as a 4-string baroque instrument. I think the movie originally had several props, some of which were playable, while others were not. I do recall that they were set up by J.A. Beare, so they would've been set up correctly. No way to tell how well they were ultimately used in the movie, though.
I love seeing Ray react to these movies. Please do another episode. Many thanks for Ray doing all these programs. They are the source of enery for my daily mundane life.🤩
@RayChenViolinist Love hearing you're take on Whiplash. Its easy to forget that it's a film that's designed to evoke an emotional response but yeah Fletcher is portrayed as the bad guy in the film looking for his Charlie Parker through, as you say questionable teaching methods. Me personally, I avoided music school but I did get a second degree after my first and play in volunteer groups and it's taught me to not care about making money from music and it's given me a neutral space I completely trust as someone who deals with general anxiety on occasion.
I think you should watch 'Impromptu' (1991) it's a great movie but it kinda of centres around George Sand's life but more importantly it features Chopin and Liszt as well, so I hope you'll give it a try.
when it comes to the scene from "the pianist", the reason he hit the G and not the F# even though it sounded like it was in F#, is because the original piece - ballade no'1 by Chopin, is in G minor, I don't know why they made it sound like F#, but the performance was right it seemed.
I’ve gotta say as a non- musician 👩🎤 but an actress for almost 40+ years, please WATCH The Red Violin 🎻 it is one of my FAVORITE movies of all time! And **spoiler 🚨 Alert** no they are NOT auditioning, they are possessed by the violin!! And now I MUST go and watch it right this minute. Bye 👋🏾
Love the videos! Always appreciate the insight and it's nice to get some historical considerations as well with the instrumentation. Just friendly critique, I'm wondering if the number of splices/cuts/zoom ins could be reduced in the editing. I know it's to emphasize the dialogue that's being shared but sometimes I think it would actually help if there's a little less, as to allow you to really focus in on what's being said (eg. 1:55-2:10 or so kinda stuck out to me).
I loved whiplash, highly recommend!! Its super painful to watch because of the abuse and it seems illegal and unrealistic to me of this time and where they live but i really dont know anything about it! But that solo in the end, so awesome!!! Great movie.
I really enjoyed Tonic; it's genuinely impressive. However, after about 30 minutes of use, my phone became quite hot and eventually slow. Unfortunately, I had to uninstall it. :( Hope you can look into this issue. Keep up the good work!
Ray, can you watch Tar (Todd Field)? You can see conductor and violinist actors there. Great new film about music and people! I love this kind of videos very much, intresting to watch and notice something. Thank you for for the good mood :D
Wonder if you could react to the guitar duel in the film Crossroads, the climax being (a variation on) Paganini's Caprice #5. I love the fusion between classical, blues and shredding rock guitar.
You have to react to The Red Violin full movie! And giving us your reaction as an audience and as a violinist. I think that would make very interesting video 🧡
speaking about the movie "Whiplash".....I have had a few teachers JUST LIKE THAT A$$hole and yet...while I couldn't stand them, they are the reason why I became a better musician
Jazz band you just kind of count them off, then get the hell out of the way. You might do cues at important parts or at the end of a solo, though. Whiplash really annoys me because it felt like it glorified bad teachers. (I've had orchestra directors who yell, and it's not a fun environment to be in.) Ironically, though, it seems like the orchestra conductors are the yellers. The jazz seminars I've had were always run like you were a professional, and treated as such. (Which was a huge culture shift to deal with when you're 18.)
Yeah, this didn't really feel right to me, either. I haven't seen the movie, but I feel the writers were more interested in making drama than realism (which isn't a bad thing from a story telling perspective). In my experience, a jazz musician who can't keep up with the group skill-wise will just be replaced. I got into my high school jazz band because the original guy couldn't cut it, but I've seen professional bands do the same.
As a teacher (not music) I’d say Whiplash is a great movie about the worst kind of teacher! The cardinal rule is that a teacher should never, never sabotage a student or injure him physically or psychically! Even for a stern master, the relationship must be one of trust. The trust cannot be abused.😳
Brother ray Chen...the human psyche is out of control, it's hard to focus on one thing. When we fantasize about flying, or having superpowers, it's a form of escape. But what's wrong with that? If escaping gives you superpowers, isn't it worth it? Violin is discipline, but life isn't discipline, life is a fantasy, an escape, daydreams, imagination, that's the first step to developing your inner superpowers!
Whiplash is great to watch once but it is very cringy so I cannot watch it again. As a conductor, I could not be that abusive but I can understand frustration with those who rush or drag.
I watched the first 10-15mins of whiplash years ago as I was recommended the movie by some musician friends, couldn't watch beyond that because it felt so frustrating. Like the guy's a dick. I want positive things in my life, not negative, and I really don't care how "realistic" it is. Just my two cents
Выпускник американской консерватории, скрипач, должен гуглить, чтобы узнать как выглядит вила да гамба или виоль д'амур??? Это многое говорит об уровне образования. Или это игра на камеру??
The red violin is a VERY GOOD movie. I understand why you’d avoid a violin movie but give this one a chance because it’s one of those high high level movies.
Not
For young children
All violin music played by Josh Bell on the recovered "Red Strad" (inspiration for film)
I liked it a lot and rewatched a few times.
@@oakhurstaxe6392Wait, Joshua Bell? The same guy who has a violin VST based off him? Now I'm interested.
The reaction I heard from musicians after Whiplash was they never would have put up with that, especially jazz musicians. They all said they would have just walked out.

I got smacked on my finger quite a few times in the 90's by the piano teacher.
People say that but in reality. Cases of abuse happen because people fall in line
Eh, I don’t know about that - of course that’s what you’d think, but people end up in abusive situations all the time.
I mean in the story, it goes obviously further than even the harshest teachers, as (SPOILER AHEAD) we learn that he led one of his pupils to suicide.
As far as jazz directors go, they do not typically “conduct” the group by providing rhythm past the first few beats. Ray, if you haven't seen The Red Violin, see it! Fanstastic movie. Joshua Bell did the violin solos. Unforgettable.
Bell even made a cameo in that movie as an orchestra player next to the concertmaster.

Hi Ray, the editing is going better and better, :) and the content is as good as always! Thanks!!
I agree! Maybe Editor San is helping him…
Adrien Brody (The Pianist) was actually the one playing the piano in that scene. No body double required.
Funfact: the little kid in "the red violin" actually played the violin in the movie and became the solo violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of only 20 years. He now is a conductor and violinist working with very well known and high class orchestras in Europe :)
"less than a minute until i finish this piece" *sacrilegiously plays flight of the bumblebee*🐝
If you can play it slowly, then you play it sacrilegously!
At least Ray played it accurately
My favorite bit from the first clip is somehow the modern plastic music stands being in some sort of ancient monastery.
also the bows are modern lol
Also the Whiplash scene is very real.. he is like ensemble instructors from Berklee College of music but on 100octane
Yes, also the tuning on the Baroque instrument is tuned differently, instead of it tuned as 440, which is the Modern way of tuning, the Baroque Violin is tuned to 415. So yes. Anyways, great stuff!
the young Kasper in the Red violin was played by the young Christoph Koncz whos also a violinist now
Humanity thanks you for doing another one of those reaction videos, Ray!
yeah... though i kinda wanna see something new 😅

Tar has some of the deepest musical commentaries in cinema. Perhaps the most realistic movie about classical interpretation.
Ray I joined Tonic! I need to practice more so thank you for motivation!!!
I really enjoyed this installment.
Ray's good explanations made the movie more interesting to watch.👍🏻✨👑🎻🌞😻

Hi Ray! Hi Everyone!
Toscha Seidel in Melody for Three, Heifetz in Carnegie Hall and in They Shall Have Music….oldies in this line
"WHERE THEY RUSHING THO??" Loved that jajajaja 😂
Great to see Hank again:-D
I really enjoyed Tonic; it's genuinely impressive. However, after about 30 minutes of use, my phone became quite hot and eventually slow. Unfortunately, I had to uninstall it. :( Hope you can look into this issue. Keep up the good work!
The Performance on the ballade no 1 played the right key in the video but the Audio was wrong. Last Note is a g
anyone else noticed that at 2:56 that the first search is viola gang 😂
Ray, can you watch Tar (Todd Field)? You can see conductor and violinist actors there. Great new film about music and people! I love this kind of videos very much, intresting to watch and notice something. Thank you for for the good mood :D
Mh, Hank has so much influence over Ray, that Ray changed his shirt color to match up with Hank the moment his frenemy arrived.
Have you ever reviewed the playing in the movie Master and Commander?
I really enjoy your videos.
Wonder if you could react to the guitar duel in the film Crossroads, the climax being (a variation on) Paganini's Caprice #5. I love the fusion between classical, blues and shredding rock guitar.
Yes!!!! There are several scenes from crossroads he should react to. I'm thinking the classical/blues mixing in the beginning of the movie
You have to react to The Red Violin full movie! And giving us your reaction as an audience and as a violinist. I think that would make very interesting video 🧡
Loving these videos! I would absolutely love to see you check out the Master and Commander scenes with Russel Crowe and Paul Bettany!
I have a question for my fellow violinist, I'm curious in which at point should I replace my bow or bow hair?
8:48 A VIOLA CONCERTO IN THE BACKGROUND?? Does that mean there's a Ray Chen 1 mil subscriber viola concerto coming?
Omg you have a tonic Sticker 😃😃
Where can I get one? Is this some special from you? Or can „normal“ unsers bye one?
Love your comments on whiplash and micromgt vs flow - that dude has anger issues too, all that russian perhaps
wondering if you ever commented regarding lestat violn scene from the queen of the damned movie
In jazz the director doesn't show all the beats
At this point I really wanna see the movie that gets a 0 or 1/10 from Ray.
I just wanna stick Hank in my pocket and protect him at all costs ugh ❤
Watch the Red Violin. Then you'll know why the players keep switching out. It's a great movie.
The violin is a Barocqe violin tuned to 435 Hz
Ray가 입은 티셔츠 어디서 살 수 있어요?
Love the comments but not the emoji additions (I'm feeling grumpy today lol.)
Where did Hank go?

I'm wondering why Raty and TwoSet haven't tackled the movie Tár yet. Is it because it's too perfect, musically-speaking?
Did John Eliot Gardiner get inspired by Whiplash? 😉
I didn't know Hank's studio was in Tonic.😂

So can we call Mozart as a jazz musician since he can improvise any piece to like another piece with the same piece 😂
I have anxiety watching scenes from Whiplash, it really scarred my soul on every watching.
For the pianist movie, I think that there might be 2 situations, well 3: the piano is made before 1800, not tuned properly, and sus
Wait did he really react to Amadeus again? The exact same scene?
