you need to put the portable monitor on the right. having the giant bezel between the screen and the macbook is hurting my eyes.

Depends on your dominant eye/ear. For instance the right is murder for me. But if it's on the left it's gold to me. With that being said, I would rotate 180 so the bezel is on the outside

I don’t think you failed on the setup(s)! Love the concept. I’m always a big fan of making the most of what you have. That’s why 3 years ago I went from my 15” laptop to a iPad Air because I knew for my on the go tasks all i needed was my ipad and a keyboard case. I think eventually I’ll pair it with a macbook pro but for now my desktop is my desktop and my travel setup is my travel setup.

Gadgets are funny problems: although beginning 12 years ago, I had 2 laptops, a Compaq 15 inches and my MacBook Pro 13 inches, and use both at same time was difficult.
Then, I had a Macbook + iPad mini, no dual monitor back then, but I made the great use from both of them, I needed the ipad mini to work in hospitals (reading and taking notes, sometimes also creating sideshows)
Then it was a bye bye to Macbook, and only iPad mini+ iPad 10.2 inches with a keyboard and pen, to use as tablet/basic computer with a second monitor connected by Universal Clipboard and Airdrop... still great, I still useful.
But now, due to the large amount of work it's an intel Macbook Pro with Touchbar + iPad 10.2 + iPhone PM: a wireless screen, iPhone Shortcuts, touchbar does its things being an limitless function keys and iPad means wireless to do discrete task screen while Macbook its at 70⁰ degrees stand.

I had nearly this exact setup when I was working out of an Airbnb for a month, minus the external monitor. Loved the ergonomics and felt nearly as productive.
Didn’t even think of having the iPad on the keyboard like that! That’s a great idea and I might be able to avoid carrying a second stand if I do that again.

One suggestion for your portable monitor that you're using in portrait orientation. Right angle cables are your friend!

1000x this. You can also get adapters that you can add on, and for my one portable display, I also have a 180 one so I can cable manage in the back more easily.

I love this concept, and not just for travel.
I need to work from home and have such a small desk fitting my laptop and a 15.6" usb display alongside it is a nightmare.
Raising the laptop and positioning a screen over the keys is brilliant!

  • @bradical1991

I love this concept, and have a similar setup myself. I always travel with my 14" M1 Pro and an 8th gen iPad for a second screen. I think the larger external monitor is just a little too much. The iPad and the Macbook combo is great as is, and if you kept the second stand you have the option between two side by side monitors or the stacked as you had. As a side note, the stacked monitor setup is insane for 3DS and DS emulation for...less productive days.

PS i'd highly recommend getting away from that SanDisk SDD Xtreme. I have two of those (different storage sizes) and all of which eventually lost my data due to corruption. I loved their size and slimness but i can promise you they are not reliable. esp if you're putting precious footage on there. There's tons of articles including The Verge mentioning the same thing to me. Promise im not out to tank SanDisk, but hopefully i can save ya some future headaches. I've already switched off of those to a Samsung SSD. cheers

After the outbreak of full-scale hostilities in my country, I had to move around the country for a while and get used to working without an ultrawide monitor. A little later, there was shelling of the country's energy infrastructure and I had to forget about using a large monitor and all sorts of electronic gadgets again. At this point, I began to adapt to working in the laptop-only format.
And you know what? I like it!
After that, I sold almost everything that wouldn't fit in my backpack, and what I still needed and didn't fit in, I replaced with similar but more compact gadgets.
For more than a year now, I've been working with just a 14-inch laptop and have no plans to return to a stationary setup.

Speaking from experience, my portable setup is just in a humble laptop bag, but if I did use a backpack, I would carry my portable monitor, which offers an additional charging port. I also recently picked up a battery bank that offers 65W of power, which in a no outlet environment, would resolve that issue.
That said... my Dell 5290 let's me use more than one external display and I refurbished it on the cheap (for work, I don't really need much, and I'd rather risk a cheaper laptop than risk the company provided one). I haven't tried low profile keyboards (the good ones), but I am curious.

I've tried this kind of setup before. Laptop and portable drawing tablet on the laptop keyboard. If there is anythigng to add on, it would be elevating the tablet a little bit to allow some heatflow from underneath the tablet. It could sting some heat when using the keyboard once the tablet is removed.

6:15 interesting solution that inspired me to play around with this for my home office that has a large monitor on the left, 14” MBP on the right, elevated, and now testing iPad Pro 12.9” on the keyboard. Note: Apple does NOT recommend leaving anything on the keyboard - paper, notebook, nuphy keyboard, nor iPad. I do believe they utilize the keyboard area with the spacing between keys for releasing heat from the laptop chassis. So, I’m looking into what I can do to elevate the iPad off of the keyboard and create an air gap for proper ventilation. So far I found tiny felt pads used for hanging picture frames on walls but looking for a better solution - not interested in overheating my brand new MBP.

I tried putting the iPad on the keys like this (I have a bigger laptop) and it pressed the keys and there’s no way to lock the keyboard like you said, unless you’re aware of something that I can’t find on google? Also, it got too hot! Maybe I need a case on the ipad to protect each device from heat.

My portable office in a bag: 12.9” iPad w/ Magic Keyboard and Pencil, iPad mini w/ Smart Cover Folio and Pencil, AT&T 5G hotspot device, Anker USB-C fast-charging power brick, Anker 7-in-1 USB-C hub, iPad 10.2” w/ Smart Keyboard if I need a third screen, and AirPods if I need to listen privately and.or need ANC. The only wires I have to deal with are the charge cables and that’s only if I run out of battery which is hardly.

While I like the concept I think this is only ideal for going somewhere that has a designated desk space. I think the ideal thing to have in every situation is something like the xreal AR glasses. As far as screen real estate goes it’s the “Swiss army knife” like thing to carry especially with how compact it is. It still allows you to use your MacBooks integrated keyboard and mouse while having multiple augmented reality screens placed ergonomically.

A question! What portable table do you use and what portable chair you recommend?
But seriously now, everything you are talking about assume that you have a table, and not just some table, but a good table, with comfortable height, clean surface, stable enough, large enough to place everything, and an adjustable chair to sit. In my experience, yes, you can expect the place you are staying at would have some kind of table and a chair. But more often than not, it will be just a plug to fill the space than a real working surface. That probably would depend on what class of accommodations you are paying for, but you still can't be sure.
From my experience, more than 90% of rented rooms would have a narrow table tuck to the wall somewhere, so your feet will hit that wall when you try to sit comfortably. If they have some other table, most of the time it will be a round one, and not very large. Cool for having a coffee, but unusable for any kind of work. Finally, again most of the time the table will be about 75+ cm high, which is too high for typing, and the chair will not be adjustable either.
The solution? I use my laptop while sitting on the sofa or bed. No external keyboard. No mouse, no additional displays, nothing that stick out of the laptop body, so you couldn't break it when moving to stand up or change your pose (and you'll need that, frequently). I may occasionally sit on a chair near the table, but that wouldn't be for more than one or two hours, otherwise my backbone starts to kill me.
The only other things I take with me is my ipad and wifi hotspot (I often use my mobile for this, although it has some drawbacks). All chargers and wires included of course.

Now they are called xreal, and they just released the xreal air 2 pro, which are much better even though the fov is lower.

I know this is just for fun and is a good video, but for others needing more space like this, learn to use and be comfortable with virtual desktops, spaces, or whatever they are called on your os. These are the additional desktops you get when you 3/4 finger swipe left right on a mac.. I'm a game dev and full stack engineer, so I'm not stranger to needing a lot of space, but I find most issues can be solved by training yourself instead of buying new things, this is one of those. I guarantee most of you watching this and needing more space will be stunned how far you can get by simply utilizing built in multi desktop functionality on your os. th-cam.com/video/y067glNHtuU/w-d-xo.html

That's too much messing around with all the items for me. You can easily switch between 'desktops' with a few finger swipe gesture on a touchpad rather than have always on displays. I would rather buy 16" macbook and sell that small one.

Apple is incredibly stupid with these limitations. I have an iPad Pro M2 but Im not buying laptops from them anymore... wouldnt it be enough just to have 2 displays from laptop and iPad? I cant imagine dragging a portable monitor along with a laptop and a 13" tablet 😅

I bought a folding stand, a huge iPad Pro, external keyboard and mouse for my 16” MacBook Pro.
I thought this will be awesome, I will use it all the time.
…it turns out, I don’t touch the iPad anymore. Now it’s just a lifted laptop with externals
The connection was WAYYYY too clunky.
Also, I had actually purchased the external monitor prior to the iPad and the resolution not be great made it not fun. Colors felt weird and looking between screens didn’t make me happy.
    So I gave up.

  • @DavidChandraP

if only we can reduce the screen to 1 so it's more portable and attached the keyboard to the screen so we can fold it..
    oh wait ...

Just because it says portable on a product doesn’t mean it’s actually portable. This is sooo much stuff, in what world is this portable?
Get rid of that huge external monitor and just use the iPad as a secondary screen. This will also take care all of that ugly af wiring. And one might actually have a chance of it being portable.
