      Great comment, and probably a sentiment shared by many many millions. Back then all we worried about was mutual nuclear annihilation, which turned out to be a hyped up threat. Now it seems that innocence is so rare it's all but gone.

      We all wanted to grow up and have better technology... But now we wish we were kids... One thing about the 80s that nobody mentions thats different from now would be that in the 80s if you were a broke kid(like I was) life really sucked... These days lower class kids can afford all types of shit, youtube, video games they're never bored... In the 80s if you were broke you get nothing, the most boring life you could imagine, if you couldn't afford cable and video games you were really fucked in the 80s, it was more expensive and hard to make money with such low minimum wage, things have become more socialistic now with more govmnt programs to help, free phones etc...

    I’m an American and I was on assignment in Sydney, Australia from 2000-2002. I caught Echo as the opening act for The Furs in a tiny bar that couldn’t have held more than 150 people. It was a very cool and intimate show. About 30 minutes after The Furs closed, both bands came out and had several drinks with those of us that remained. I got to chat with them. Psychologitron The 60s and 70s had amazing music to be sure. I think our generation had a healthy respect for the music of our parents, unlike more current generations that seem to be largely disconnected from / disinterested in tradition. In the 80s, a surprising diversity of genres blended together to create a fun atmosphere.

      Key word there... "Almost". There are a steady supply of NEW bands in recent years showcasing the 80's New Wave influences. Because IT IS indeed a "timeless" sound bands like Capital City, M83, Knox Hamilton, Crystal Castle's stunning "Not in Love" (featuring The Cure's Robert Smith) and Spandau Ballet-esque and unabashedly 80's NEW band St. Lucia "Walking on Broken Glass". There are plenty of 80's infused bands out there like Ok Go "Writings on the Wall", Coleman Hell "2 Heads", Joywave and of course everybody knows about The Killers and Neon Trees. While the greatest decade since the 50's may be over, I am thrilled to know that the 80's has branded itself on the these next gen bands. Suffice to say... the 80's will never die.

      yeah music essentialy started to die after the 80s some exeptions like the pale saints "insubstantial" any one who likes beautifull emotional music with that contrast of total euphoria and total despair will love that album its an absolute masterpeice they went downhill after that apart from the ep with kinki love on it . these days music total sucks i hate all of it apart from some of the new psychedelic bands like mars red sky esp arcadia.

    No offense to anyone but the 80s music for me wasn't about Michael Jackson, it was about The Cure, U2, The Police, R.E.M and many others like Echo and the Bunnymen raising the bar. Eternally grateful for the greats. And lest we forget that grunge was born in the mid 80s....Soundgarden, Motherlovebone, Screaming Trees, Green River, Mudhoney, Malfunkshun, Ten Minute Warning, The Living, Alice in Chains, and especially Nirvana....
    Others who made the 80's not suck: New Order, Dinosaur Jr, Jane's Addiction, Meat Puppets, Cowboy Junkies, Fishbone, The Melvins, Bad Brains, The Specials, The Stray Cats, The Dwarves, Yo La Tengo, The Adolescents, Uncle Tupelo, Run DMC, Billy Idol, Siouxsie Sioux, Sinead O'Connor, The Buzzcocks, Green Day, The Jayhawks, Metallica, Pantera, Primus, The Pogues, Sonic Youth, Sepultura, Suzanne Vega, Guns N Roses, The Pixies, Slayer, Terence Trent D'Arby, Anthrax, The Beastie Boys, Public Image LTD, Indigo Girls, 10000 Maniacs, Butthole Surfers, Social Distortion, Minutemen, Tracy Chapman, The Damned, Ministry, Big Audio Dynamite, Generation X, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Love and Rockets, Depeche Mode, Violent Femmes, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Smiths, David Lee Roth, INXS, Agent Orange, The Revolting Cocks, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, Flipper, The Fixx, DEVO, The Plunderers, The Fall, Oingo Boingo, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Dead Kennedys, Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Jesus and Mary Chain, Peter Tosh, Billy Bragg, Happy Mondays, Bootsy Collins, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Men at Work, Dead Can Dance, Modern English, The Housemartins, Digital Underground, The Romantics, After the Fire, Stone Roses, The Cars, Pat Benatar, Blondie, The Clash, Public Enemy, Barrington Levy, Sade, Eddie Grant, REO Speedwagon, Elvis Costello, LL Cool J, Travelling Wilburys, The Highwaymen, The Blake Babies, A-ha, Psychedelic Furs, Big Country, The Pretenders, The Lemonheads, Arrested Development, Black Uhuru, The Cult, Frank Zappa, Motorhead, J Geils Band, UB40, Bob Marley, Funboy 3, Eurythmics, Sting, David Bowie, Jim Carroll Band, Iggy Pop, Herbie Hancock, Crowded House, Joe Satriani, Madness, Queen, Megadeth, Human League, Van Halen (pre-Hagar), Tom Waits, Dire Straits, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adam Ant, Duran Duran, Grace Jones, ZZ Top, De La Soul, The Power Station, Zapp, George Clinton, The Thompson Twins, Whodini, The Gap Band, Ice T, Thomas Dolby, N.W.A, The Bangles, The Go-Go's, EPMD, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Squeeze, Buffalo Tom, Run DMC, Simple Minds, Simply Red, Eric B and Rakim, The Misfits, Steve Vai, The Grateful Dead, Tears for Fears, Prince, KRS-One, The Church, Black Flag, Robert Palmer, The Ramones and thousands of other artists across many genres helped make the 80's a formative decade that further developed the birth of new sounds coming out of the late 60's and 70's and began refining these elements not only in and of themselves but incorporating them across genres to keep them fresh and innovative.

      But Michael Jackson was a big part of the 80's music scene too. Michael Jackson! Come on. You have to respect his part in it. Michael, Prince, Madonna...and the many other music artist, such as the music artist you mentioned.

    • @danielp.6083
      @danielp.6083 3 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      @@alfreddreamer9097 All due respect but (yes I agree that Prince was a genius and I had him in mind when I made my statement) Michael Jackson and Madonna were not musicians in my eyes--they were performers first and foremost, singers yes but their music was mostly made for them by others. At best they may have written some of their own lyrics or come to their producers with ideas. If you look at the Thriller album for example, that album was 70% Quincy Jones and songwriting legend Rod Temperton and a few other writers. Jackson brought the basic outilnes for Billie Jean and Beat it and Startin' Something and QJ did all the work. Add in cameos like Eddie Van Halen and a duet with McCartney and there ya go. QJ did the same thing with Off the Wall (1979),
      Most of that album is him too, with only 3 songs "written" by Jackson. And in my eyes, Jackson fell apart after Thriller. All his albums thereafter were just "Bad" and pretty sad. Madonna at least wrote the lyrics to most of her songs and though she was incredibly popular in the 80s and 90s, popularity and pure talent are way different. I don't think your average MUSICIAN has a great deal of respect for her these days unless you're Cardi B or Beyoncé or at best Lady Gaga. So to sum it up, MJ and Madonna are caricatures of 80s pop, overblown throwaway jingles and filler. They and hairbands gave the 80s a "Bad" name. Especially Jackson, that sick little Peter Pan. Good riddance.

      Yeah life in common was so much better. i always complained when my grandfather of father talked about how things were better when they were young,
      but now i'm saying the same thing and its true, because everything was better back in the days, and we see this europe going down the toilet bit by bit every day,
      so it doesn't get better but worse instead. We are just modern slaves, so we aren't that better of than people who lived in the medieval ages.
      Work and pay taxes or die under a bridge, and there's no other option. Well, we could move to canada in one of those plces where a happy few live on their own
      and have nothing to do with goverments or paying taxes, but hen you hae to hunt your own food and stuf, but that ain't the life i want, so i better keep

    One of the greatest bands from a great decade. I was born in 1953, LOVED the 60's, HATED the 70's, and then all of a sudden there was great music again! Damn shame NONE of this stuff got played on American radio!

      What did you not like about the 70s ???

    • @ailurophile17
      @ailurophile17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@StanwoodSpartans Pretty much 9/10th's of the stuff that has mistakenly been referred to as "classic rock" (biggest misnomer ever!) for the last 50 years or so. Bombastic arena bands of all shapes, sizes and varieties, "sensitive" singer=songwriters (with the exception of Joni, Van, and Nick Drake), country-rock, Barry Manilow, Olivia Newton John, disco, heavy metal wanking and misogyny (with the exception of the first bunch of Blue Oyster Cult records that were more high powered garage band rock than the "pointless guitar solos" h/m party all night variety of moronic excess). But what I LIKED about the 70's never even got a chance to be heard, particularly in the USA: Flamin' Groovies; Artful Dodger; Fairport Convention; Big Star; Blue Ash; New York Dolls; Brinsley Schwarz; Ducks Deluxe; Daddy Cool; Linda Lewis; Richard Thompson; Sandy Denny' Steeleye Span; and then the NY scene that gave birth to Blondie, the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, and Talking Heads....more on request.

    • @ailurophile17
      @ailurophile17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jayflynn2701 Didn't listen to ANY stations at all after around 1969 or so since I pretty much couldn't stand ANY of the "hits" in the post-"Sgt. Pepper" world of spurious socio-significance and was just waiting for something, anything, to rid the world of 70's "classic rock" which I consider to be the biggest misnomer in history. Hey, you might have heard some "new wave" in NYC or Cleveland or SF, but it damn sure wasn't being played in western NC where I was living!

    Tenho 57 anos. Vi o concerto ao vivo em Lisboa em 1982 no pavilhão do restelo.ainda tenho o bilhete como recordação. Eram apenas eles no palco sem nenhuma sofisticação e as músicas tocadas na perfeição simplesmente. Nos 80's praticamente todas as músicas eram obras de arte. Todos os dias surgia uma musica nova. Sentíamos um enorme entusiasmo e alegria de viver. Só tenho muito boas recordações desse tempo. Fui um felizardo por ter 15 anos em 1980.

    They would play this song at the end of a dance set at Nell's in NYC in the 80's. They would slow things down so people could rest but I would still be dancing. I have a dance background and I would take over the floor whenever they would play this song. Thank you for the memories Echo & the Bunnymen.
