    Mineral spirits with scrubby pad or 0000 steel wool works good for wax removal. Clean with degreaser afterward.

    Hey, that's a good thought to use acetone to clean wood. I use it in my workshop all the time for cleaning metal parts. I need to remove the wax that was used to seal a not-so-old 15 gallon whiskey barrel. Once the oak and the steel hoops are stripped, I can add a faux patina to the outside surfaces. This barrel will no longer be used to hold liquids, so wax is no longer needed. Thanks for your video!

    I just picked up a Tennessee Cedar armoire, sitting with a free sign down the street from my house. Someone didn't love on it very well, as it is dinged up, chipped, and scratched. Unfortunately, I don't know the first thing about refinishing wood furniture. I am hell bent on bringing my new piece of furniture back to the condition it deserves. I can see it is going to require more intervention than just a fresh sheet of sandpaper. I am hoping I can binge watch your videos in hopes of learning the method and techniques I would need to utilize in order to bring new life into the cedar armoire. Any comments or suggestions are greatly welcomed and appreciated. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us through your videos.

      If you want to keep the wood, try what I showed in the video and if it looks good, wax it and you are done. If that does not work, next I would try Restor-a- Finish by Howard's. It is a wipe on product that is quite amazing. It comes in several colors to match different woods. I use Howard's wax and it after the Restor A Finish as recommended and I love it. If your piece is really rough, apply Restor a Finish with 1000 grit steel wool. I have made the most beat up pieces look amazing with Howard's Feed and Wax. The combination of the video and the Howard's products should work. Side note: I am not however in any way a wood expert and would not advise experimenting on pricey antiques although I personally do. I don't want anyone to ruin their stuff but I think you will make this Armoire sparkle!

      I have the mac daddy of all paint tricks coming up in a video you may appreciate. I got hold of some 100 year old church doors and I am making them look like they came out Spain with layers of color, crackle and distressing. It is probably my favorite project of all time and I can't wait to post it and see the results.

    Use gloves always with acetone. It never too late to start. It’s not a question of if it will kill you, it’s when.

    Very helpful video! I thought I’d tried everything on my wax and good built up wooden chairs. Thank you so much. I was wondering, do you have to clean with micro fiber cloth and a magic eraser first or was that just for the video?

    Try feed and wax. Its orange oil and beeswax. It works great. If the piece is really dry I use lemon oil first. You can find it on the top shelf at home depot above the stains for wood. This is for after cleaning.

    Mr clean cleaning sponges are useless on a job like this. I didn’t try acetone. I did use Awsome yellow cleaning fluid obtained from $ store. That worked great. Then I oiled. I have to cane the chair I am working on. It will get a couple more oil coats before the cane arrives.

    Is acetone the same as nail polish remover ?

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nail polish remover contains acetone and a few other ingredients.

    Xylene or toluene (Xylol of Toluol) actually do better than acetone in dissolving wax.

    • @lseeber01
      @lseeber01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toluene will fry a few brain cells in the process tho unless in a really well ventilated area. Take it from a wild child of the 60s/70s.
