    If you are a user of furniture polish, you might want to re-think things. Furniture polish is a 'catch all' product which really doesn't effect much, aside from a streaky and hazy finish over time. Instead, here are the right ways to care for wood furniture! I've even included a DIY furniture polish recipe for you.
    Aside from mayo, I can't stand milk or Jell-O. What food aversions do you have?
    Enjoy!

    Hi Melissa - I do a fair amount of working with wood, and I think I would prefer that you replace the olive oil with simple mineral oil. Cheaper, no odor and no chance of the oil going rancid over time. If you want to clean a cutting board, or something that comes in contact with food, I would suggest monthly treatments of high quality mineral oil.... typically found in the laxative section of the store.

      That's a great suggestion, Ed Draper - thanks for sharing!

      like which kind of oil exactly?

    • @eddraper
      @eddraper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      At our drug store it's just called Mineral oil laxative. As you can drink it, it's really pure. Just pour on a tablespoon or so on each side and rub it in all over. Your wood will love it and it'll look great.

    • @SimpLeeBeth
      @SimpLeeBeth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Walnut oil is a "no." Nut oils are very susceptible to going rancid quite easily. Stick with mineral oil!

    Olive oil will spoil over time. Cold pressed walnut oil is what master woodworkers use on handmade wood items. Food safe for use on cutting boards, spoons, bowls, ect. I highly recommend not using olive oil! It will seep into the grain of unfinished wood and spoil.

    I'm old school so I would clean off years of wax and all that other stuff with, you ready, mineral spirits. It may be toxic but it's also effective. Its been my experience that it cleans really well and doesn't harm the original finish. I used it on my 45 yo kitchen cabinets and then a coat of Johnson's paste wax and they look great. My solid maple bureau from about 1960 renewed. Solid maple instead of glorified cardboard, made in Vermont.

    Great video! How do you clean white spots, stains, splatters on black legs of wood chairs. Not sure what they are from, but over time I tend to get them and cant get rid of them. What to use when your black furniture is dirty? Yours looks very clean so I can see how a simple wipe would clean them. Also how do you clean/what's the best way to clean hard to reach crevices on chair corners and their slatted backs?

    • @jenniferschmitzer299
      @jenniferschmitzer299 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      crevices? get your vacuum, put the crevice tool on the hose, get an artist type paint brush or larger one and use it to brush the dust out. the brush gets into the nooks and crannies and the vacuum directs and sucks the dirt/dust away so its not being spread into the surrounding area. ive done this heaps of times. im currently cleaning an old louvre pine pantry cupboard i bought yesterday at a garage sale for $15 that looked quite gross with caked dirt, dust, old greasy hand marks near the door handle and food stains, never been oiled or cared for and generally unloved. i thought for that price and the size and shelving and my lack of budget i didnt mind. ive just did the paint brush and vacuum trick, ive also just scrubbed it down with watered down oxy cleaner to remove the stains (which worked) and also hydrated it a bit. im about to steam the cleaner off it and give it a bit of wood oil love after that. even if its not perfect, its a darn sight better than yesterday when i hauled it onto the back of my truck lol.

    I was just slightly confused for this cleaning solution. I used the 1 part distilled white vinegar and 3 parts mineral spirits. The mineral spirits are JASCO odorless mineral spirits from the hardware store. Obviously this formulation is probably not safe for kitchen cleaning/Food prep
    Did I make a good effective general purpose cleaner for current woodworking projects of mine and for shop cleanup, specifically wood desks, cubby’s and work benches.
    My concern is using mineral spirits from a hardware store instead olive oil like you directed. Please tell me your opinion.
    I’m self taught and any help you could give would be very appreciated and generous.

    Our wood kitchen table bas a finish on it that when you use any type of cloth to clean it and try and buff it your finger leaves marks right through any cloth you use .
    I've tried many products to remove the real fine scratch marks but as soon as you run your fingers over the wood it makes more marks

    Hi Melissa! Quick question, why do you do three parts Olive oil instead of two parts? I was making it for the first time and I was worried that it was toooo much oil. I did 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar and 3/4 of extra olive oil.

    Hello from Australia. I watched one of your videos and think you might be able to help me. (Sorry but I don't have the patience to look through all your videos for a possible answer.) I have one question/dilemma. The first time I entertained with my new cube coffee tables, a little girl spilled some soda pop, possibly lemonade (7 Up). I of course wiped it up immediately with a damp cloth but I think the fizzy component removed some of the shine. If I am able to post a photo, you can see one side of the top is a different colour and actually does not feel smooth like the rest. What can be done to restore the look and feel to the finish?

    Hi. Would eatable grade mineral oil be better than olive, mayonnaise or vegetable oil in your cleaning solution? Mineral oil will not go rancid. I have used it on cutting boards for 45 years. Although I haven’t used it to clean wood furniture. I’ll give it a try in your vinegar and water solution. Thanks for your ideas.

    I have spots on my hutch which I think were caused by my cleaning lady using too much white vinegar in her water and then not getting her rag wrung out dry enough. Is there anything I can do to correct this?

      Hadeel Elhamouly Hi Hadeel, I would suggest using carpet shampoo. Give it a go and see if it helps.

    it's a tie between haggis and water. Melissa, do you like Miracle Whip? I feel ya on the mayo, but everyone in the world loves "Mayonaise" by the Smashing Pumpkins.
