Rich, thank you for the tour on the underside of the beast, this is pure Gold to guy like me. Having done a lot of my own routine maintenance on previous autos for years ( my last gasser had over 500K on it when I gave it away) I really appreciate the design and ease of access to perform simple maintenance procedures. I am retired military (USCG) aircraft aircrew/maintenance mechanic so I can really appreciate a good design when I see one. In the Guard if we crapped out an engine away from homeplate the base would send us a new one and we came home when WE fixed it, we did it all. Love those disc brakes, eazy peazy, especially the fronts.
Watched this last night and I’m like “there’s no way these cars actually have bolts falling off...” Then this morning I take our Model 3 to get an eco hitch installed at a local shop and when I pick it up I ask the guy “hey, weird question, you notice any bolts missing back there?” and sure enough he goes, “glad you said something, almost forgot to tell you you’re missing two bolts at the back.” Wouldn’t have even considered it without this video Uncle Rich.
The radiator cover under the Frunk storage traps a ton of leaves and crap against the radiator. I didn’t even realize there was a radiator in there. My Model 3 is 3 years old and the cooling fan was running super loud like it’s going to explode, for hours and hours, even while parked in my garage for the past 6 weeks. I found a video talking about cleaning out the radiator. I get in there and pry back the cover to find the radiator was like 70% blocked with debris. I vacuumed it out the best I could and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to explode anymore. I also found that the coolant level was low, something you can’t even see without taking the Frunk Storage cover out.

Uncle Rich, thank you and Chad and The EG Crew. This is an awesome and comprehensive video as someone who is hoping to be a buyer of a new Model 3 soon.
This is the video we've all been waiting for. Hell, nobody knows what the maintenance routine is for a Tesla. Finally somebody actually walks you through the nuts and bolts of annual maintenance. Long overdue.... What the hell good is a car if you don't even have a clue as to how to fix it and maintain it ?
Rich. If you did a hard brake once a week or so would it keep the brakes healthier? I was told to do this on my Volt. Also were you chewing gum while recording?
Braking from time to time helps to prevent a rust film on the brake pads. You see this a lot on cars (of any type) that are not used for a long time, i.e. when being out for sale. So yes, some braking does indeed help to keep your brakes "healthier" and especially helps getting the full braking power when you need it. Also, it uses the brakes so little that you won't have to worry about exchanging it sooner.
Great video, apart from the fact there appears to be a golden retriever with a bag of toffees holding the camera. There aren't many things in this world that trigger me...
Thanks for making this video Rich. Nice work Chad. Would you recommend adding a touch of lubricant to the rear brake guide pins? Also when does the fluid need to be flushed? What is the typical cost to do a service like? Also, does Tesla care if this service was not done by a certified tech? I figure brakes , wipers and filter could be a DIY.
Wow this was a great video....i don't know if anyone has asked you what flavor gum you're chewing...but i would like to know..BECAUSE IT SOUNDS DELICIOUS !
One thing i like about tesla is u can release the rear parking brake for service thru the display unlike vw nightmarish power parking brake depending on audi or vw model
Great video Rich. Much appreciated for a Tesla owner in Canada. I’ve done the front brakes but I was curious about the rear brakes. Also, the battery swap was a great tip, because mine already failed and now I’m ready for the next failure.
Great video Rich!!! From what I understand the alignment specs are different for the Long Range and the Standard Range vehicles due to the weight differences. Can you please confirm? Thanks,
The weight should not matter. If there is a big difference in weight, the cars spring rates will be adjusted to compensate. This way both cars will have the same ride height. Same ride height means same alignment specs. Still, I'm curious what the official answer is.
All i know is when Tesla did my alignment they got it wrong twice. I had to take it back and go for a ride with the service person. Only when he realized that i has the smaller battery did they get the alignment corrected. Thanks for your reply!!!
I don’t think I’ve heard a mechanic ever say, “Got to check these bolts to make sure they aren’t missing or loose”, & “oh, look at that, it wasn’t even installed correctly”, for any other car with only 16k miles on it. Just boosts my confidence in Tesla so much.
This reminds me, I should align my wheels. I've been getting negative camber wear. Shops can't never get it perfect, they just tell me it's close enough. 😒
At 30k miles, my fronts show inside edge is worn twice as much as outside edge. I thought this was camber, but is it toe? Is this type of setup better for aggressive cornering?
Set up for cornering and wear your tyres extra on your dailies. Could be both, could be under inflation too compounding the problem, go see a hunter or 4 wheel alignment with caster and camber and total toe values
On my rear wheels, I have an SPC adjustable camber arm. In the front everything is OEM. My tires will last me about 2-3 years instead of 4-5 years with proper rotation and psi. From the factory, my Mazda came with a slight negative camber for better cornering. But wears out the tires on the inside faster.
Once in tow mode, as long as you don't close the door, the rear brakes do not reengage. At least in my experience but when playing with replacing pads you're gonna wanna be more careful so this advice of removing the cable is good.
If only all mechanics were like Chad - a man that takes pride in knowing stuff and pride in doing a good job. Bravo.

Can you buy different wiper blades (Goodyear, rainx, etc.) and still get the proper quick clip connect for the Model 3?
An unbelievable informative video, thank you Sir.
Electrified Garage🔥🔥🔥💃
One thing i like about tesla is u can release the rear parking brake for service thru the display unlike vw nightmarish power parking brake depending on audi or vw model
Uncle Rich how good is that gum your chewing lol??
Juicy Fruit is delicious yo
Great video Rich. To the guys in the shop, I think they are doing a great service job. Well done guys and clean shop as well.
Was the battery replacment necesary?
Not for a service, would’ve been customer request
I wait to replace my battery until it's dead!
Brilliant, good video. After the X please do same for the S.
TIL some of the maintenance items are quite DIY-able.
Outstanding video! One of the very best Tesla videos out there.
How about that oil filter in the rear, more info?
I guess it is for the gears the the motor
Probably not worth checking after only one year
Great video Rich. Much appreciated for a Tesla owner in Canada. I’ve done the front brakes but I was curious about the rear brakes. Also, the battery swap was a great tip, because mine already failed and now I’m ready for the next failure.

What about the oil filter???? When is that changed???
Every 3000 miles kappa
@@ninjamaster3453 What! No.
@@JasonWW2000 I'm sure he'd be alright going 5000 miles. Kappa
@@ninjamaster3453 Probably closer to 100,000 miles.
The early model S required oil change at 12k miles and then every 50k miles. The model 3's seem to go much further between recommended changes.
Thank you , good to know
Hey Rich, what flavor was that gum you were chewing? 🤭
Wow, better than a Haynes manual. Thank you so much.
Within spec there's a range. Perfect is harder to achieve, but not impossible, just make sure you look at camber castor and toe not just toe.
My 08 Silverado stil has perfect alignment after all these years
Tesla is bit disapointing
Thank you Rich.Regretfully I don’t have an alignment rig like that, but seems like I can do everything else. I’ve already done the cabin filters…
How much would all of that cost to have done?
@Ken Befound If it were a BMW dealer servicing this, this would be $1200 easily.
I have a feeling it was expensive. The alignment, battery and wiper blades was unnecessary in my opinion on a new car like that.
The 3 gives a warning when the 12v gets weak
Once in tow mode, as long as you don't close the door, the rear brakes do not reengage.
At least in my experience but when playing with replacing pads you're gonna wanna be more careful so this advice of removing the cable is good.
Love your videos but man don’t chew gum with you mic on geez bad look brotha only trying to help keep it up
Great Video, nice to be able to see what service on M3 is all about. Thanks
