The fact that you probably have no chance of buying a house on a tradesman's wages due to sky high house prices probably takes away a lot of incentive for young folk to work etc I'd imagine. Obviously if you run a successful trade business like yourself different but I'd imagine that is a massive factor. Removes hope so they don't bother.

Firms haven’t increased wages for long time. What are painters getting these days on paye? £12-£13 per hour subbys around £15 agencies are paying £18-£21.

Great hearing from your dad, got to do more in the future, maybe about being on the job, some funny’s.
Todays kids leave school thinking they are going into a top wage job. An if it’s not a top wage job they are not interested in doing the job. The attitude is different now.
When I was a teen as soon as you turned 13 all school holidays were spend working on learning a trade. Weekends I spent learning from my dad every Saturday. These days your be lucky to get any 13 year old working learning a trade.
So when I left school I had the knowledge to fix and engine from my dad, paint and decorate from my cousins who taught me in the school holidays.
This type of thing would never happen now. Am I grateful for them teaching me, hell yes. Couldn’t thank them enough. Tho I’ve serve in the military, been a college lecturer in life.
I can also fix any engine or vehicle, and now do painting and decorating for a living. I hated it at the time as mate were out and about etc… But those mate are stick in jobs they hate. An I’m doing something I love and enjoy.
The government have messed everything up for the youth of today, parents don’t help the issue as well. An apprenticeship or going to work learning from tradesmen in school holidays should be forced for the youth of day.
But t the same time you can see why the youth doesn’t go into apprenticeships or learn from a tradesman. House prices, vehicle prices, the price of basically everything has gone up to the point that, if the youth are not on a top wage straightaway from leaving school the have no life. No enjoyment in life, there parents demand to much in paying towards the house they live in etc…
Time have changed but it’s not for the better.
An you see it when quoting for jobs, how many time have you heard it’s only a bit of paint etc… They don’t see the years of training and skill needed to make a wall or ceiling look perfect. Yet them customers will be the first to complain if it’s not perfect.
My brother a electrician his son is a young plumber (early 20’s) been to college, worked an apprenticeship now working for himself, he said people think because I’m young they can under charge me on price for a job. But I’ve been to college learnt passed courses, been an apprentice and learnt. Still learning every day. But customers think I’m half price of the job because I’m young.
This say one thing people don’t care or understand that it take years to be good or great in a trade. They only want the job done on the cheap. An the funny thing is they always know someone that does it cheaper than the tradesman that spent years learning.
Yet it is alway the real tradesman that has to fix what the cheapest person did completely wrong. An still the customer doesn’t want to pay the price the tradesman wants.

Well done Phil and greatest respect to your Dad (Doug) I’m pleased I did my indentures back in the seventies was a lot of good standards taught on the job and with clients it stood you in good stead for life. No disrespect to youngsters today there are many that are willing to learn even if they go through a shorter training program that’s progress.
Dad clearly deserves to pick and choose his hours, well deserved.

Great to here from an old tradesman like your dad.I started in 1981 and did an apprenticeship 3 years back then ,most people I work with now never trained properly.Worked with a lot of men from your dads generation at the beginning but sadly mostly gone now.The trade has changed a lot and I think people’s expectations of what can be done is unrealistic for the price they want to pay.Hope you make more videos with your dad there very interesting. Thanks!

yes spot on a lot of customers make it impossible to you job properly with what they want to pay theres always someone to come along thats cheaper cause they aren't pricing to do the job right just got to what you can now especially on exterior work also the internet doesn't help like cheackatrade etc got prices on there what people look at. who the hell are cheackatrade to decide how much a job should be they aren't going round to have look just printing some nonsense online

Thoroughly bloody enjoyed those 3 parts, great work Phil & Doug. It's actually really good to hear that your Dad generally thinks things have got better in the industry because so many of the older generations I speak to who are retired but occasionally swing a brush say its not as good as it used to be. Your business has succeeded because you both embraced change.
I didn't realise you both took the advanced craft after your 3 years, I was offered the extra 2 years but declined and did plastering, plumbing and carpentry instead (all beit adding another 5 years to my education!) I'd be interested to know how much you both use the graining, sign writing and marbling skills these days? All the best fellas. 👍

I did a fantasy Mable effect on a bath a couple of years ago

Dad does more graining if needed.
But it's having the ability to do it when the time arrives.

@ProfessionalPainterDecorator sounds great Phil, I'll give that a watch. I've often thought about going back to do the advanced (if they still do it) even though I'm now pushing 50, you're never too old to increase your skill set. I watched marbling being done on a hall floor once and I wished I'd gone on and done it!!

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator in all seriousness youngsters today are bombarded with social media so any channels about craft skills like yours are great for getting them interested in trades. Government needs to back up with funding for training initiatives and apprenticeships.
