This companion is amazing and it used to be super cheap at Top Shelf’s website, I remember buying several copies and giving them as gifts. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in how comics are made and how graphic narratives are built.
William Gull was already a senior citzen when Jack was brutalizing those women. Alan Moore took this WG idea from a 70's book called Jack The Reaper-The Final Solution. Not 100% sure about that.
No he 100% took the idea of gull being jack the ripper from jack the ripper - the final solution. Alan moore himself multiple times has said he doesn't think gull actually did it and that by all accounts the real william gull was actually a pretty good person.

This is unrelated but have you never thought about doing Image United? The unfinished jam comic series by the Image founders?
Read the appendix story first at a friend’s house. Was amazed and had to get a copy of the Gn myself!
