Brian Herbert is like the antithesis of Christopher Tolkien, however, it should be noted that Christopher Tolkien never co-authored under his father's name, but rather edited his father's unfinished works starting with The Silmarillion in 1977, four years after his father's death, hence why he's credited as editor on Tolkien's posthumously published works.

To put it mildly: Brian Herbert is complete shit. No time nor money is ever worth it for the tripe that he's happily dolled out over the years. I literally launched the book that I read by him out of the window. He may be related to Frank but a writer, a story teller he is not. The quality that Frank managed to achieve in his DUNE novels is simply incomparable to his son's output. Also, Frank's other novels are nowhere near the level of sophistication that he managed to achieve with his DUNE novels; I think that it's worth keeping in mind that even accomplished commercial writers don't attain any level of success nor acclaim all that often, and in Frank's case, the man struggled for many years with it and developed it over time. As such, he devoted a great deal to it, and in doing so has crafted a novel - a story that will be with us for some time I feel. Ignore Brian's output and stick to Frank's original novels is my advice.
I agree! Frank Herbert's original books, and "The Dune Encyclopedia" are the only ones worth reading. The ones by Brian & Kevin read like children's books, or bad fan-fiction compared to Frank's writing, imo.
Great video. I‘ve never read the BH KJA novels. From what I hear they are not terrible, just so much less interesting and deep than Frank Herbert‘s work. I also dislike this endless milking of Dune especially under the pretense of working from Frank Herbert‘s notes. I do ‚t think that‘s actually that true, although I don’t mind the fact that new Dune books Are bei g written. Just be honest about it.😊
The Brian books aren't meant to be compared to the original dune books. They're just more dune. Brain never claimed or implied to be as good as his dad. As someone with daddy issues myself, let the man feel close to his dad by making dune.
Oh also, for people wondering which books they should read, which is something this video doesn't address clearly: Don't go beyond Emperor... save yourself a lot of headaches and heartbreak. Emperor provides a good enough ending to the saga as it is.... I would recommend stopping with Heretics, but unfortunately it leaves too many plot points dangling for the sequel(s). In a perfect world, the relevant parts of Heretics would be included as a sort of epilogue to Emperor, but there you go...
7:32 The book....."The Road To Dune" explains the friendship Frank Herbert had with Bill Ransom. Also when Bev passed away in Hawaii.... How much organization she did for her husband. Frank donated a lot of his paperwork and illustrations to a University after he would pass. Frank wanted one of his kids to keep writing a long with him. Brian started working with his dad at some point. Many more facts in the book that i think all fans of Dune should pick up. (Did you even read this book???)
I wouldn’t compare Brian to Christopher Tolkien so much as I would compare him to David Day. Both David and Brian are clearly fans of their respected series but also don’t have any objections to publishing their own interpretation and passing it off as canon. Both make tons of books using the author’s name and recognition to sell copies, all in fancy formats with cool artwork, but lack the ability to say anything really profound about these series in their writing beyond surface level observations and understandings of the story
Lord of the rings , author died after starting new series , Dune author died before finishing Wheel of time , same thing A song of ice and fire .... I guess george kinda forgot he's writing
You refer to a planned film of Dune Messiah and then say the "rest" of the novels may not be adapted and never have before. Did you forget about Children of Dune that was produced for Sci-Fi channel? Were you just referring to the final three books?
I sort of understand the hatred, but you gotta look at it also from the point of view that 1) it's his inheritance, and while it might seem scummy and whatnot (and sure, it is), on the other hand, why wouldn't he cash in like so many other children cash in with their parents' work. And 2) and this is the most important point: Brian and Kevin obviously have a fanbase, because if no one had bought their first couple of Dune books, no one would've published more... the fact that there are soooooooo many BH/KJA books means that people are buying them, so I think the blame falls a lot more on those consumers, if at all, because there's nothing wrong with liking something others don't. So again, I kinda get it, but I think people should reign in the hatred a bit... no, he's not tarnishing his father's legacy... Frank's books are still there and intact and they'll forever remain so.
Does anyone where to even get the actual og more gruesome book, I’ve seen some ppl talk about how the newer releases are more pg, and with some comparing I did of the text fonts and features it does look a bit different from the one shown in 3:06, I just want to read the gruesome one to know the actual full story. Thanks
... I'm a moron, because I like Brian and Kevin J. Anderson books. It should be noted, that people always bash Brian Herbert for those books....But forget tha Kevin J. Anderson is also contributor to those series. I wonder why?...maybe it's easier to bash Brian's work than an already established writter like KJA....Repeat, I like all those books also.
@@transquelaag haven't read any of it. All I know is I need more Leto in my life. And if the prequel stuff is willing to give me more Leto then I'm willing to accept it.
People can feel anyway they want, that's how the world works, but I really enjoy Brain Hebert's Dune books. He's going off his father notes about where he had planed on taking the series if he hadn't died. Is Brain as good a writer as his dad, of course not and I think he would been the first to say it, but the books are good as far as I'm concerned. He's writing style is different then his fathers (similar to GOT or a Soap opera with multiple storylines going on at the same time. Which is a writing style I like.) Most of all and while I do like Star Wars, I'm not a huge fan, there's no deny that George Lucas and the other people that have been behind it's ongoing development over the last 40+ years, that I think most people would agree that the Star Wars universe is the best envelope and flushed out over any other book series, but I also believe with the Dune series books that Brien/Kevin has written put the Dune universe a close second and with that fact that Denis has also got permission from the Frank Herbert estate to do other projects people need to understand whether you like it or not everything Brain/Kevin has/and are writing in the Dune universe is cannon, and I wouldn't be surprised if Denis and Brain after Part 2 is released put out an updated Dune Encyclopedia that also will be cannon. I hope they do.
I'm late but the distaste for Brian's work seems to be coming from a pretty ill place, and I think people aren't giving him the chance he deserves. While his writing style is not the same as his father's he's still able to convey his narratives very well and I really find his works to be great enrichments to the Dune universe. I'd still recommend people read the original saga before the expanded material, but the expanded stuff is not bad in the slightest.
This is how I rank the 7 that I have read: 1 Dune 2 The Butlerian Jihad 3 House Atreides 4 Dune Messiah 5 House Harkonnen 6 Children of Dune 7 House Corrino

Reading hunters and sandworms of dune ruins the beautiful, mysterious ending of chapterhouse.
I found this video a very informative video as I am new to the Dune franchise thankyou
Read Books 1-6 and the Dune Encyclopedia, that's it. Normalize outing Brian Herbert as a coat-tail rider and let this be a lesson on nepotism
Edit: I don't believe Road to Dune contains any of Frank's actual notes, distorted and contorted by Brian and KJA, no doubt, but I wanna read that floppy disk if it's even real
Please make another vid like this on The Wheel of Time & Middle Earth.
timely intro, thanks!
I'm obsessed with the works of Tolkien. Recently began Dune, and it is depressing how unlike Christopher Tolkien Brian Herbert is. Christopher really treated his father's legacy with the respect it deserves. I'll gladly read the 6 Dune books, but I won't be reading any of the others.
Thanks for this video! I've been looking into the Dune series as it sounds like something I'd like, however I was getting very confused on the actual number of books out there. Not a fan of the obvious cash grab from Brian but I'm sure I'll end up reading all 44 books because I tend to get very interested in things. Great video again !
i just wanna know does the 6 books have an ending? or it lives u with forever unanswered plotlines for the nonexisting 7th book.
All dune books end on a somewhat open ended form meaning even if you don't read the next book you'll be quite satasfied imo. But the sixth book does end on a very cliff hanger way compared to other dune books
@@midnightphilosophies3904 damn. That's a shame the original author died. I kinda feel the same way like the guy from the vid. If it didnt come from original author, then it doesnt count. But the first 3 is a trilogy I assume? N 4 is stand alone? N 5, 6 and 7 supposedly the second trilogy which never got finished.
Basically where should i stop reading to get a satisfying ending. Book 5? Or 4?
Im really interested. I need a new book series for work. Audiobooks saves lives.
@@krombopulost4699 read the first 3 for paul's story and its aftermath. Book 4 even tho many say its a stand alone it very much continues and is regarded as the best book by many. So I would personally reccomend till the first 4. But if you have time do read 5 and 6. Especially 6's ending even tho people many people take it as a negative thing on how open ended the ending is but its my favourite part of the book its very poetic and introduces two of the most unique and interesting characters in the series. So if Im being honest I reccomend all the books but since you are asking for a satisfying ending I would reccomend till 4
@@midnightphilosophies3904 hey thank you so much for that. time for sand
I wish they’d given a more capable author the Dune franchise.
let me catch my son bastardising my life's work and milking it for profit!
A birdman fan I see
A classic tale of an offspring fucking up his parents work. What a shame but love the dune content my guy !!!
Ok you got me!
I ain't reading that 7th book when i get to it.
So far I'm really am enjoying children of dune and god emperor of dune are my favorites in the series I haven't read the other two yet
Ok so ill stick with the og 6. :D
Just be honest about it.😊
I hope you don't mind me asking, but where is your accent from? You seem to have a Portuguese accent.
The Brian books aren't meant to be compared to the original dune books. They're just more dune. Brain never claimed or implied to be as good as his dad. As someone with daddy issues myself, let the man feel close to his dad by making dune.
thanks for sharing !
WC!!!
Why do I keep confusing you and alt shift x
I was considering reading Brian's dune books but now I'm definitely not going to do that he's just doing this as a cash grab
Read the first 6 and leave it at that. Never touched the others.
" And the abomination called Brian Herbert...."
Lord of the rings , author died after starting new series ,
Dune author died before finishing
Wheel of time , same thing
A song of ice and fire .... I guess george kinda forgot he's writing
Berserk too.
@@arifurr oh man , I always forget that he passed away recently :(
You refer to a planned film of Dune Messiah and then say the "rest" of the novels may not be adapted and never have before. Did you forget about Children of Dune that was produced for Sci-Fi channel? Were you just referring to the final three books?
so we will never know how the universe and story ends in book 7... this really sucks
Not every son is Christopher Tolkien.
Thanks ....I was about to waste my money 💯
Thanks
Dude you must really hate Herbert's son wow
My brother decided just today to read 17 consecutively. A LOT of content and fake history involved.👌
Why!!!
You are allowed to like fan fiction no worries

You ppl have no idea what you are talking about 😂😂
This is how I rank the 7 that I have read:
1 Dune
2 The Butlerian Jihad
3 House Atreides
4 Dune Messiah
5 House Harkonnen
6 Children of Dune
7 House Corrino
bruh, I dont Frank would care what his son is doing to the dune books, brian has every right to do whatever he wants to Dune.
Considering he hated his other son for being gay so I doubt he’d be kind about endless consumerism of his works
Who is getting the money now?. 🤣
I'm amazed about the hate Brian and Kevin get just because some people can't accept anythign else than somethign written by Frank Herbert himself, so the rest is garbage and milking. Sad haters calling themselves fans of Dune. Some haters even feel the need to make videos hating on them disguised as informative Dune books videos.
Nah he’s the classic example of a fail son
