I bought an EV for my wife (Renault ZOE 41kWh) 7 years ago. Never used a public charger with it. The reasons for that were: the silence, no vibrations, regen so less need to brake, only short trips, can recharge at home on a standard plug at night.
For me, I changed this year only for a EV (Smart #3 - kept my Toyota Verso for 12 years - ultra reliable car - never had an issue). I'll mostly do trips to work with it, and for the occasional long trip, the infrastructure here in France is now good and still improving.

I was sceptical on EV's, having laughed along for years watching Top Gear (UK), but 8 years ago got a chance to tag alone on a test drive of a Tesla P90D and wow did I realise how good EV's were and the fastest thing I'd ever been in and that includes S4 Audis, Aston Martin V8 and BWM 640! Within 3 months of that test drive we got a Renault Zoe (sadly a Tesla was well out of reach) as a 2nd car for my wife to see how they were to live with and kept it for over 7 years. bit over 3 years ago I was able to finally change my car to an MG ZS ev and couldn't be happier.

There are some awesome EVs out there, performance or otherwise!
Technology moves so quick. When I was born, there was no CDs, no DVDs, no laptops, certainly no smartphones or internet and the list of things we now have would have made people shake their head in disbelief in the 60s and 70s.
Who'd have thought we'd have drones, digital action cameras and even household items like microwaves all at affordable prices, at least in western countries? ICE vehicles had their time, but it's just a numbers game now. Which company will will make the next breakthrough in battery technology? Which company will make the next best 4WD EV? Even which company will mass produce EV trucks? Which companies will be able to produce cars at cheaper and cheaper prices through economies of scale?
Thanks for the comment and good luck!
PS My brother has a Tesla Y Performance. Blistering acceleration!

@@bydatto39461 I'm just waiting for the 2nd hand Model Y's to drop a little more but plan on that being my next car.
As you say, the way technology moves on is staggering. EV's have gone from being tiny little things which were very slow to super fast saloons that would give a sports/hyper cars a run for their money (granted mostly off the lights) all in the space of 20 years. ICE cars have massively improved in 20 years as well, but they have just got more and more complicated to achieve any real improvement. EV's just do the same thing, but better all while being simpler.

Hi mate, how do you charge it with excess solar only and restrict it from taking any charge from the grid. It seems to be having some limitations with intelligent charging as per ChargeHQ how do you circumvent that issue?

    • @bydatto39461
      @bydatto39461  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

You can buy Wall Chargers to mitigate this. Personally I can adjust the draw manually on my charger. If it's summer I can draw close to 7kw. The rest of the time I limit my draw to 3 or 4 kw.
If I draw some off the grid I'm not particularly worried, it's still a fraction of the cost. Remember I don't need to charge every day! Every few days, so it's pretty easy to pick and choose when to charge. If I was employed full time, then it would be a different story
In a few years time, I will be upgrading to a much larger solar system, with battery storage and possibly a wind turbine too

I have not much clue about australia but I have heard the name Kalgoorlie before quite often on some mining episodes here on dmay so it must be a city and home for opal or gold miners.
But 7 hours ride to perth with an EV is not the easiest challenge unless you have at least huge battery to start with and charge only once to reach destination and I bet you will stay there overnight. These multiple charging stops are adding too much time even if you can charge fast and for a long time but that also depends on how oten you have to do such trip. Every 2nd month might be OK, but more often you will not really love the huge amount of time and the challenges in case chargers are broken and you have to go in turtle mode, at least if you have an appointment in Perth.
We have a really high density charging infrastructure, usually also working chargers, but in Australia going 700 km or so would equal crossing nowadays germany from the north Hamburg to Munich in the south. Would be possible and easily but makes only fun with cars that have a big battery with max. 1 charging stop for lunch.

I had written that comment in the beginning without no clue what was coming but I find it interesting to hear from the outbacks of Australia how people move ahead from ICE to BEV. Quite astonishing are the differences between our roof and yours cause we need much more solar power, the roof is full with 30 kWp to cover our demand for heating during winter replacing russian gas and petrol and a 20.000 kWh surplus which we feed into the grid to get a faster pay back.
      Great video.

Looks quitenice. Wish it was a full BEV, but if it gets people interested in an EV, I'm all for it! Fully Electric version to follow maybe next year? It's a great size for an EV

My wife and I have solar, so I have explained a few times we charge 80 to 90% of the time from solar for free. We've had solar panels for 5 years. On a long trip, it's about 30 to 40% cheaper than petrol
