Down Under EV Adventures
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 ก.ย. 2022
Hi, I'm G, based in Western Australia, and my wife and I love to travel. This channel is all about EVs, including our travels with our 2023 BYD Atto 3.
It also features around 30 older episodes, with our previous PHEV 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander, so if you have that vehicle, some of those episodes may interest you.
Among other things, Iris and I are interested in alternate energy ( we have a home solar system) future tech, recycling and battery storage systems
With regards to our Atto, we often test efficiency on long trips, and explore our home state of Western Australia. We also explore features of the car
I do post some of my trips on this channel, but for a more in depth look at the places we visit, please come over to our other Channel, findingGspots :

Are you thinking of selling Atto 3 for Y ?
Thanks for the video. This helps.
Thank you so much 😊 I requested an explainer on the Auto hold feature. Glad that you made detailed video on it.
No worries. Cheers!
recently a friend of mine ask me to go with his as he was going to test drive a new 2024 Skoda Karoq as we come back from the test drive and he parked the car i said to him to lock the car just to find out that the key wasn't given to him the car was started as we went for the test drive so looks like this is not just with BYD cars
I thought that the P-gear button does the same as the other P button. But why have two if one button would suffice?
It's not what I was told. I treat it like I explained when I bought the car. I think the issue is possibly when the car is gear ( D ) it could be problematic if you put the hand brake on, but I stand to be corrected, I'm not an engineer! I basically drive the car like an ICE automatic
why do you have separate Sat nav what's wrong with BYD Maps
The Text is way too small, I can't read the street names!
I thought when you set P gear is automatically engage the electric hand brake. No need to manually set it.
I have never had a flat tire in 40 years so no spare tire will be no issue for me. I will go for the Sea Lion 07
Oooh, you shouldn't have said that! Now you'll probably get a flat!!!
Which part of your head to you hold the key fob against?
Just to the temple, I think anywhere that's skin contact will make an antenna
I use this trick daily with my gate and garage door openers. They seem to have particularly poor range on their own. Even just shoving the remote under my chin seems to work fine, and looks less dorky to onlookers :-)
😂😂👍👍👍@@plonkster
Sealion 7 will be a better purchase as you'll get sick of charging up the Sealion 6 every day. If you can't be stuffed charging it every day, then you're better off with a normal hybrid like the Haval H6 Ultra which has the same 1,100km range but costs $10k less and never needs to be charged.
Any full EV is better for me, as I don't miss going to petrol bowser! I will def be having a look at the Sealion 7, I've seen some Chinese Car reviews on it, performance model looks the goods!👍👍👍
I like this feature very much because it allows my brother to drive the car from 10 kilometers away.
Mercedes does the same thing. If you drive away without the key, it just makes a chiming noise and once off can’t start anymore.
@@bobbyus I wonder why modern cars do this. My old Mitsis and Subis would turn off the power to the engine if you tried to drive away leaving only steering and brakes working. Maybe its a liability thing
And just when would a person need to start the car and walk away? When all a person needs do is start it when they are ready to leave. By starting the car with a valid key or authorization via the app, you are allowing the next driver to use it, in effect giving permission for it to be driven without the key. It is not only really foolish but leaving ANY car running without the driver present would be very dangerous. This was a silly "flaw" since there is literally never a reason to power it up and walk away.
@@Wandering_Bear did you even watch the video? It was if someone was able to get into the car, by overpowering you, or if you had stopped the car for a minute to get out and someone went in..It has nothing to do with allowing someone to use the car. There should be an option to disable any feature that allows another person to use the car without permission. I only use my key fob, and are not interested in allowing 3rd parties to use my car. If anyone needs to "borrow" my car legally, then I would give them the key fob. I don't "share" my car with anyone!
Yes, I watched the whole thing and it still sounds pretty weak to me. Any car can be taken if the driver is overpowered and the key taken. The same goes for leaving any car running while you walk away. Yes, it would be nice to disable a car remotely if something so incredibly rare happens, but this would be incredibly dangerous. Can you actually imagine a car being shut off on a motorway?
@@Wandering_Bear That's my point, cars can be safely shut off. My previous Subarus and Mitsubishis had this feature. The engine shuts off, the brakes and steering continue to work. It happened to me when I was driving the Subi. So its able to be done safely
I think it is the for Tesla.
Same with my Atto 3
That you can drive the car without a key or card, was already clear to me, as you can use the app, open the car (anywhere in the world), let somebody get in and that person can drive the car. Only when they shut it down, they can't start it up again. Considering the warning that there's no key, that one seems pretty useless.
Yes the warning is useless then. It wasn't made clear to me. All cars I've owned have needed the key within a set parameter, eg 50 m in order for the car to work. It's one thing to allow remote access, another to allow unrestricted use of the car in ordinary circumstances
I’m not sure how this is shocking. It’s not exclusive to the Atto 3 by any stretch - and happens with any car with a push start and keyless entry. If the car has been started with a key - pretty much any car, you can drive it off. I have personally done this on both a Nissan X Trail and a Toyota Corolla. The functionality is universal, rather than a fault with the Atto’s security.
It has never happened witj any of my previous cars, including the Subaru I mentioned in the video. It's either a proximity key thats needed to operate the car or its not. I am surprised, amd I'm sure other people will be as well
@@bydatto39461 what the BYD doesn’t do that other cars like this I have come across does - is to loudly beep you are taking the key away. But I don’t think it’s reasonable to call it a major security fault. It’s common and I guess a choice of the manufacturer. I mean, calling leaving a car running and unlocked in my opinion makes the operator as much a major security risk as the manufacturers choices. This appears to be an intentional decision. I have exploited this function by opening my car with my phone when I’d left my keys in the office, allowing me to drive the car off.
I wasn't surprised. I thought this how all cars with proximity keys and push button start operated. The more you know.
😱Thanks for this. It is very useful to know, i'm vigilant anyway but i'll be even more so now.
I'm very aware too, but genuinely shocked that you could drive so far!
@@bydatto39461 Yes, definitely not good. Here's hoping they fix it🤞
I am hanging out for the SL7. It will be 2025 for sure. They need to let the SL6 settle in and focus on the Shark as well.
Great video! Thanks
@@Robin803246 No worries, cheers!
I've got the Premium (Callled Design in Europe) and its actually pretty impressive. Driven carefully, ive got 300 miles (500km) from a charge, and its comfortable. Long term issues for BYD to fix are the way it determines the speed limit - it gets it wrong regularly - and the way it manages potential hazzards - braking sharply for no obvious reason when driving past parked cars on occasion for example. Handling is fine under most circumstances, but can be very wallowy over speed bumps.
Thanks for the feedback, it's appreciated!
The boot is not 574 litres
Car Sales Specs says it is www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2024-byd-sealion-6-premium-auto-awd/SHRM-AD-642659/ A few sites say this, so these are my references, but I have no way of testing it personally! One things for sure, it's bigger than my Atto 3, which is 440 L, so it looks accurate to me
When the Sealion 07 arrives, I will go and have a look. The range won't really be know until testing in Australia as China persists with the VERY LENIENT CLTC method. If you are looking for ground clearance with outdoor camping in mind - have a look at the Smart #5 specs which will probably come to Australia next year as well.
Thanks for your comments. I will definitely check it out!
The sealion full electric would be awesome
I think so too!
have you any ideas on how to stop the glare from the sun on the centre screen? its impossible to view on a sunny day
Definitely having a extra shade underneath the shade cover may help. You can buy those aluminum coated foam inserts to put between the shade cover and the sunroof. Try adjusting the brightness of the screen as well, I don't recall ever having a problem. I can imagine if you drive with the sun at a particular angle ( in the early morning, or late afternoon ) it could be problematic. I never really drive for prolonged periods, in the same direction, with the sun at a low angle, so if that's your scenario, there may be not much you can do. Have a play around with the brightness setting and see if it helps
looks nice
@@G1O8ETR0TT3R it does!
NISSAN LEAF ZE1 e+ is better in every way
It's rubbish battery management system 😂. Also leaf is so easy to degrade 😂
The Leaf has it's fair share of problems too. But EVs, even the average ones, are way better than petrol or diesel cars!
Can you please create a video on Auto hold, Electronic Parking Brakes and parking features?
I'm on holiday at the moment, but when I get back to WA I'll have a look at this
@@bydatto39461 thank you
I'm not really sure what the point of the nfc card is?
Hi. When you say you granny charge at the AirBnB overnight is there some etiquette with the owners about using their power or do you just run an extension cable from the house and not say anything. I'm yet to do a country trip in my Seal and was curious how the overnight charging situation is handled. Thanks, and thanks for your channel.
@@stevelaw-davis4043 I normally ask permission and offer them some money ( $5 ) If I can't get hold of anyone I can't see it being a problem as you've already paid for accomodation ( usually at a premium ) In reality a granny charger only draws simliar power as an air conditioner. Edit: I should add, noone has ever refused my request yet, and most people refuse the money as well!
Thanks. I could not open the bonnet for 15min, in preparation to a long trip. This video saved my day.
@@maval10 my pleasure!!👍👍
Would you mind creating a video explaining Auto hold, Electronic Parking Brakes (EPB) and Parking mode features in Atto3 and how they differ? Thanks
Its coming up soon!
LSS permanent now? This thing tried to kill me couple times, also many reports on facebook about it. If I not able to switch it off, is too dangerous too drive and Atto 3 is done. Anyhow, last update in UK did more harm than good. Acc become more paranoid of every single tree or bush on side of the road. Trying to find videos here is any good this time come with update, got nill here. But thx anyway...
@@audriusa5368 You can disable the lane centreing permantley ( see my Quickie Episode on it ) But Lane Keeping has to be disabled for every ignition event. Around town where I live it's not too bad, only on the major roads where line marking is vivid. The new safety systems are becoming problematic for sure. BYDs other cars here in Australia, the Seal and Dolphin, both have phantom braking problems being reported by some drivers. I'm in a Dolphin for a couple of days as we speak, and had a Phantom Braking episode just today! Was a bit unnerving to say the least. Don't know what the solution is. I'm running v1.6 on my Atto, and no plans to upgrade if I can help it! Having said that, my wife's car could be worse, the Dolphin is terrible. Speed warning unable to be disabled just one example. Sounds are grating, not refined at all. Look out for an upcoming episode on it! Best of luck anyway, we can only these systems improve...
@@bydatto39461 yes, lane centering and LSS is completely different beasts. lane centering works like charm on motorway and I enjoy it a lot, only shorter that in other cars "hands on wheel" timing is annoying, but ok there. Even you can teach AI which lane closer you prefer and its stay away slightly from trucks automatically. LSS is other beast, which is dangerous. I have 30% curve at my home with 40mph limit. Once LSS turned sharp and hard steering wheel to opposite traffic, crossing double line. Lucky enough my both hands was on wheel and I managed return back to my lane after intense opposite lane driver honking. With one hand and turn force so hard I wouldn't unable turn in time back. 35mph doing me, driver opposite was like 40 mph = result is 75mph into wall. And LSS doing that every time in same spot-I carefully checked couple more times. No thx, now I remember evil LSS on every ignition.
I really like this car ! When you accelerate, all of the weight of the car gets shifted to the rear, which means that the rear wheels are gonna get pushed on the floor and the front are gonne get less weight pushing them donw on the road, WHICH MEANS that rwd cars are not going to spin the wheels at acceleration. Also I'm so sorry to be this kind of people but there's an error in the title ! *its uses
@@achaz_ Thanks for commenting. I obviously wasn't watching my grammar carefully that day! Sorry...🤫🤫🤪 Cheers

I run my Tesla M Y at 42 psi. The higher load rating of EV tyres makes for a tyre less prone to distortion at slightly higher pressures so should not cause uneven tyre wear. Nice vid.
@@evfactsnotliesplease cheers
Thanks for that informative video about tyre pressure, it was something I did wonder about and now you have provided the answer. I am missing my ATTO very much as I am still in Canada on holidays. Love watching your videos and such a cute doggie. I am missing our kelpie after watching that video.
Thanks Brett. Hope your holiday is going good in Canada and it's not too cold there! Have a safe trip, G
brilliant very impressive and oh so easy to install and uninstall thanks Yeah would like one for cables and other charging equipment Sadly i am in Melbourne BUT far better than other frunks
Yeah they are great Frunks, v easy and the perfect spot for cables.
How's dust on this thing?
It's not that bad, but if you are worried, you can put your chargers in a plastic bag ( or whatever you put in there )
engine bay area isn’t closed off from the bottom in a car so while driving kicking up dirt and all that will eventually sit in the engine bay area. that’s why you should also clean it a few times per year.
Thanks for the Frunk review, not sure if I need one yet, food for thought. I wonder how much air travels through that area whilst driving. I am in Canada BC on holidays and have seen lots of chargers running off Hydro Power. I have seen heaps of Tesla’s but not one BYD. My neighbours back in Perth just put in orders for a BYD Seal and Sea Lion. They are getting a free wall charger included in their order.
Some people have said they remove their Frunk in Summer as they are worried it affects the air-conditioning. I haven't noticed anything. Enjoy your holiday in Canada! Do they even sell BYDs in Canada???
👍👍
👍👍
Did you remove the 'Build Your Dreams' on the back? I am sure I saw it earlier in the video but then it wasnt apparent later. I've test driven one, and my biggest concern was the longevity of the interior dash etc in the Australian sun/summers.
Yes, check out the episode : th-cam.com/video/lFWbI8L7q-U/w-d-xo.html The Interior is excellent quality. I recommend just sitting in one, and assessing the quality for yourself!
Nice experiment. For comparison, they usually quote a 1% daily drain for Tesla. When I went away for 21 days, my Tesla's battery reduced 15% (or 0.71% daily drain). So BYD appears impressive in maintaining its charge. Note: I wouldn't use the term "degrade" here, since that refers to a different battery condition 😊
Thanks for the insights, very interesting, and yes you are correct, "degrade" in hindsight probably wasn't the best term to use!😎
I've had the atto 3 for 1.5 years, best decision I've made!! Technology and inside feel so good!!
Thanks for the feedback!
I love these smaller channels, always give great info without all the bs.
Good honest review. I wish they could put a full size spare in there. I must be old school to think that way
There's some new Chinese brands coming to Australia this year. At least one of them has spares in it's EVs. Maybe there will be a change of thinking if they want to get increased sales in Australia? I agree with you though, why they think a 20kg spare tyre is going to significantly impact economy is beyond my comprehension!
How much BYD pay you to make this video? According to China Observer, BYD cars crumbled the next day.
You are completely wrong. I have an ATTO3, and it is a great very durable car, but you knew that, didn’t you.
He got paid extra warranty and good quality 😅😅
I laughed at your comment because if he was paid by BYD then he’d be saying everything was good about the car but he didn’t do that. He liked it overall but he did mention the things he didn’t like about it. China observer report the more isolated cases so it’s not widespread. Like everything the media reports a lot of the stories are just sensational
😂😂😂😂I wish I got paid...SEND ME A CHEQUE! .........PLEASE! 😜😜
@@MaxBee-f2e Of course I knew that. There are lots of haters and trolls out there based on the huge viewership for those channels that paddle fake news and disinformation.
Why would you want to turn it off? The only complaint I have is that it isnt strong enough in 1.8! Previously the lane assist was great and with the hack to enable “god mode” meant effortless highway driving. 1.8 the lane keep assist isnt quite strong enough and it no longer appears to be possible to engage god mode. Major downgrade! :(
@@headstart.running Why would I want a violent and dangerous jerk of the steering wheel when I'm trying to avoid a pothole or piece of wood on the road? All lane keeping assists are not up to scratch and quite frankly dangerous and intrusive. I'm driving the car, the car is not driving me....yet. Each to their own. This is my wifes car, my car I'm still running v 1.6 which I prefer
Hi, thanks for that test as I have left my ATTO3 in a garage for 5 weeks whilst I am on holidays in Canada, left it about 80% so will look see what has happened to the charge level over that period of storage. Cheers Brett
Let me know how much you lose! I'm hearing from a few people they only lose 1 or 2% over that time frame. Next time I leave it though, I think I'll leave it at about 60%!
Hi, I watched your upgrade to 1.8 which I also did about a week ago. The annoying lane assist? Does seem to be permanent now. I did like the driving lights disable switch in software as some times you might be sitting somewhere in your ATTO and the lights only drain power from the battery but it’s a pity you can only enable and disable in software. I tried voice control but that didn’t work. The mobile App seems to have also changed and you now have a find my car feature which I used in the carpark the other day and it was close. I haven’t noticed any other changes yet. BYD seem to be expanding rapidly in Perth, my neighbours have just ordered a Sealion for him and a Seal for her.
Hi Brett! Thanks for the info and comments. I haven't had time to delve into the changes yet, so it's good to hear some feedback. Perth seems to be a good place for BYD, whilst here in the Goldfields, Iris and I haven't seen a single other BYD yet!
