  • The Ethan Allen Express is a beautiful Amtrak train journey from Rutland Vermont down to New York's Penn Station. It's especially wonderful if, like me, you do the trip in the middle of autumn. Enjoy the lovely "fall" colours of orange, red and green as we ride the 5 hours and 30 minutes in Amtrak business class south to New York on this lovely train.
    Check out my Europe by Train Bright Trip guide: www.brighttrip.com/europebytrain
    This year I'll be taking more of the world's finest and most spectacular trains. VIA Rail's four-day epic "The Canadian", the Hiram Bingham up to Macchu Picchu in Peru, the glorious El Chepe in Mexico, Amtrak's Southwest Chief and even the iconic Blue Train will all come to your screens in 2022.

    I am British and consider Amtrak one of the best reasons to visit the USA. I’ve travelled from NY to Miami, Chicago and across to LA in Amtraks sleeping compartments - a lot more expensive than flying but such great views and fun. Americans are some of the worlds most open and friendly people. Provided you are well insured it’s a great county to visit. Yeah - definitely more Amtrak vlogs Paul !!!

      Amtrak is the best way to see America, leave the driving to someone else. Of course if you are in a hurry, fly. But then you are flying over America, not seeing it...

    History lesson from a local! Albany used to have its own rail station named, imaginatively, Union Station. However when I-787 was built, they built over the tracks and moved the station to its current location. The old building was barely better than a shed. The current, much nicer, building opened in 2002.

    Seriously, this might be the prettiest of Amtrak's Eastern routes. I've had the good fortune to take it twice, both times for business (hence also in business class) and both times in autumn. The views, especially along the Hudson, are spectacular. It truly shouldn't take longer to train this route than drive it, but you do get the benefit of those views. With wi-fi, you're also able to work and stay productive.

    Great report. It's nice to hear some good things about Amtrak. Perhaps the growth in metro and regional rail services will help its growth. In the Northeast, the major problem is that many of the routes were surveyed and laid out in the 1830s and 40 and designed for speeds

    • @stevenroshni1228
      @stevenroshni1228 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think they need to manage expectations for people to have a positive review of Amtrak. Its best for sightseeing than anything else (some of America's best views are only accessible on the rails), but speed improvements for journeys to be under 5 hours (the limit that city center to center is competitive to a short haul flight), make sense.

    • @ronclark9724
      @ronclark9724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@stevenroshni1228 No matter how fast a high speed train is, if it can't get there before the sweet spot of 3 hours, even that high speed train of 200 MPH will lose the economic battle with the airlines. America is a large nation, not a TINY nation like Japan, France, or Germany. I beg to differ, 3 hours, not 5 hours...

    • @MrOpenGL
      @MrOpenGL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      We really need to stop saying that European nations are tiny and the USA is huge therefore USA doesn't need trains.
      Even in densely populated cities, the railway infrastructure is terrible. I mean, really, one train per day for a 5 hour ride with an average speed of 40MPH? Come on, there is better service in Europe to towns with less than 3000 inhabitants (Mele, Genoa, Italy is home to 2700 and has hourly train services plus bus) than in the USA for cities larger than 1 million.

    I've stood next to the Amtrak train at Rutland (the old building, like a shed) in 2002. I was part of a International group from South Africa working at the Killington Ski Resort. After hours I did dish washing at the Palms Italian Restaurant. The Amtrak train was especially special to me due to my work history at Spoornet South Africa (South African Railways and Harbours). From a porter during school holidays to Assitant Manager Operating. A career of 23 years. Miss you guys. Enjoy and take care of your Rail network and your country. God bless.

    Albany is also the engine change point on some of the other trains that continue on.
    The P32 is dedicated to service in and out of Penn station as it’s Amtrak’s only dual mode locomotive, so they don’t want them venturing far, though they will sometimes go as far as Toronto on the jointly operated with Via Rail “Maple Leaf”.

    • @gregwhitney8820
      @gregwhitney8820 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 700-series P32s run on the Empire Service to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Though some Empire Service trains are New York to Albany-Rensselaer. Unfortunately, the Maple Leaf hasn't been running to Toronto during the pandemic.

      Dinah Shore sold a lot of Chevys... Americans in a hurry fly, and those too cheap to ride Amtrak drive their cars. Outside a few of the larger cities, Americans almost have to have a car to get around. Greyhound and Megabus do not stop at so many rural locations anymore...

    Hi Paul, thanks for bringing back some great memories from when I was in my early 20’s. I took a trip to the States and Canada which ended up on an Amtrak train from Montreal to New York, the Adirondack Express I think it was called. It ran through Albany and down the Hudson, it was a journey I will never forget. In September the colours were amazing! The other reason I won’t forget it was the scheduled journey time took nearly four hours longer as freight trains took priority. Running through JFK to catch the flight home wasn’t fun after a full day on the train!
    You have inspired us recently and will hopefully be doing coast to coast on Amtrak in September this year New York to San Francisco, for my sixtieth birthday, I can’t wait!
    Cheers Paul, John

    I loved this! I used to take Amtrak from Montreal to New York City before the border closed due to covid. It’s an amazing trip with Lake Champlain to the east when heading down, and the Hudson River to the west. The downside was that the journey could take 10+ hours, with about 2 hours spent at the border (something that could be avoided by having immigration pre screening in Montreal as is done at the airport for travel to the US ). It’s hard to justify that length of a journey (a flight takes 1 1/2 hours) and there is the inconvenience of arriving in NYC at night. But the day on the train is amazing!
    You were lucky with wifi as I found it doesn’t work until you reach Albany.

    Woo hoo!! Paul passing through what is currently my neck of the woods. I live about 45 minutes from the Schenectady train station (yes, you pronounced it correctly), and have used that station a lot, especially when my hubby or I were weekend commuting from New York City. We've taken the Ethan Allen Express often!!
    We are friends with the station manager at Schenectady. I know the station so well, that I even recognize the backs of the buildings near the station.

    It’s been quite a while since I have been on an Amtrak train. I have never traveled in business class. What I like about the train is that you can easily walk from one passenger car to another. I do like it when the train approaches the station and the conductor opens the door as the train is about to pull into the station.

    Paul, Thanks for a great video that could be used as an ad for the Ethan Allen Express. You will have to come back in this summer, hopefully July 2022, when the Ethan Allen Express will be extended 70 miles from Rutland north to Burlington, Vermont, bringing passenger rail back from Rutland to Burlington for the first time in 69 years (1953)!

    I took the maple leaf Amtrak service up to Niagara Falls back in 2017. Stunning views along the Hudson as the sun rises. It’s really a different world up there.

    Hey that's me! Great video as usual. Never taken the train that far north, but I've done ALB-NYC countless times. Always easy and convenient.

    Hi Paul, Good to see your video after a while, glad you posted your Amtrak experience. I did recently travel by Amtrak, from Washington DC to Metropark, New Jersey station. Unfortunately Amtrak still stuck with one of the oldest coaches almost 40 to 50 years old Unlike Europe and England who have already replaced their old coaches and modernized. US is far behind in the public transport still, mostly dominated by aviation industry. We are really looking forward to a much improved modern railway system here in US as well. Look foward to more of your train content in 2022. Cheers

    Native Rutlander here! The track between Rutland and Whitehall is an absolute disgrace. I could run faster than the train for the first 1.5 hours of the trip. Also, the Ethan Allen is set to be extended to Burlington via Middlebury later this year, with possible service to Montreal (!) in the not so distant future. Excellent video!

    Paul, great video. You went right through my old home town of Sleepy Hollow, NY. It’s a fascinating place full of history and lore. You should visit it next time you’re in the NYC metro area.

    Only been on Amtrak once before with a return from Washington to New York which I thoroughly enjoyed. Will certainly do more rides now that travelling is easier. 👍

    Great video once again. I have ridden both VIA Rail and Amtrak and have found the seats on Amtrak to be more comfortable. With the investment that Amtrak is getting, hopefully train speeds and frequency will increase on routes like this. Ps the Run along the Hudson is spectacular!
