    no way! my grandad helped building this train! he designed a lot of mechanical components of the settebello and arlecchino, he helped designing both the settebello and arlecchino recognizable shape of the locomotive! sadly he passed away last november, just afer his 94th birthday, but i'm happy that his work is still appreciated by people all around the world!

    Luckily, we have the right person at the right place. Mr Luigi Cantamessa is the Head of Fondazione FS. Not only he is a railway passionate, but he's also a railway engineer who's taken credit in bringing Italy's most beautiful rolling stock back on our tracks. The Italian National Railways museum in Pietrarsa is really worth a trip, it is by far Europe's most beautiful railway museum

      @@sankardevc Pietrarsa is close to Neaples. You take a local train from Neaples Piazza Garibaldi in direction of Salerno, Pietrarsa is the third stop. It takes 15 Minutes.

    I remember taking the Settebello from Rome to Florence in 1970. It was my first experience of first-class train travel and it was spectacular. Our train had the full dining car, for which one had to make reservations, and there was a gentle dingle of a bell over the PA to announce the next seating.

    I LOVED watching this! What a way to start the day. I used to drool over pictures of this train when I was a small boy. It epitomised the allure of Italy and Europe, and the boldness and optimism of the best post-war European industrial design. It's very pleasing indeed to see this beauty given the same respect and care that is accorded now to design classics in furniture, cars, architecture etc of the same period. Tanti auguri Italia!

    I saw the Settebello about 50 years ago. Probably the most beautiful train I've seen. Thanks Paul for showing us this trip. This will go on my bucket list.

    When I was 4 years old my windows gave me a direct view on the railway at Prato, north of Florence.
    Each day a few minutes after 12 my mother came and we watched the Settebello. That was nearly 55 years ago. It's so great to see it still going.

    This lovely trainset used to be part of a set of four trains, three of them unfortunately are now gone. They are still restoring the surviving Settebello, which was originally only an entirely first class train.
    Fondazione FS is making an impressive job and is also restoring an old trainset which reached the world speed record in 1939

    I am 33 years older than you, so I managed to travel several times in the Settebello and the Arlecchino. In its final years, Arlecchino was the first "rapido" (fast train) of the day linking Florence with Milan with only one stop in Bologna.

      Exactly. I still remember the first time I sat there actually driving a train. The cab view experience is very different from what passengers normally get to see. I love the view from my "office" - sure beats being stuck inside an actual office all day.

      for me, it's not a daily occurrence, but I am lucky to be able to travel in the cab a few times a year professionally. It's great.

      More times than I can count in a DSC 1970 vintage shunter on a 7.5 km heritage line in NZ. But aside from that,, I once did the return trip from New Plymouth to the big Fonterra milk/powder plant in Hawera,75 km south. I had a driver/instructor contact who got the cab pass for me. We were pulling a close to 1000 tonne milk train which had no show of stopping for idiots who took their chances ignoring warning signs or bells at level crossings.

    Well done Paul, what a great video! The Arlecchino is a brilliant example of Engineering as art. Italy has always been very much ahead of the curve in rail travel, last week I took the Italo Return from Milan to Rome non stop, from Centrale to Roma Tiburtina 2hrs 55 mins, exceptional service at 300kmh and only €70 for a first class return ticket.

    They did an outstanding job refurbishing this train. The complimentary biscuits and espresso is a nice touch too! There's a few trains around in Japan too where the driver's cab is placed above.

    What an amazing piece of post-war design. Glad it came back to life. In Switzerland there is a train with a similar concept (front seats with a panoramic window and the train driver above). It runs on the Golden Pass Line between Zweisimmen and Montreux.

    Paul, you were lucky to snag a ride on this advanced (I.e. innovative), groundbreaking, classic beauty. I've been wanting to ride it since I saw in in a train book back in the late Sixties. What I wouldn't give to ride it, especially up front! What a beaut! Here's to Italian Styling.

    The Arlecchino was the "cheaper" version of the Settebello, with less carriages and less ornate and with less expensive tickets, the last standing Settebello is currently undergoing restoration, can't wait for you to check that out; a little detail, the Settebello was an only first class train and the front lounge was accessible to every passenger, just imagine if they used today some space for giving an extra service to the passengers instead of having more paying seats

      I can recommend wholeheartedly the Ferrovia dei Parchi, formerly known as Transsiberiana d'Italia. An older diesel locomotive in a distinctive red and green livery, brown coaches from the 30s, and stops in some great towns along the way (Castel di Sangro, Pescocostanzo, Campo di Giove), often with a lot of ambiance (there was a brassband playing for us in Campo di Giove, and there was a market going on with local food and crafts). And you can visit Sulmona, home of Ovid and confetti ;)

    Bellissimo , quando ero bambino esisteva ill settebello milano Roma non stop ! Treno bellissimo con i miei genitori ci viaggiavo spesso , mi mettevo tutto il viaggio nel belvedere , impazzivo e adoravo il ristorante del treno ! Bellissimi tempi !! L’Italia vera non lo schifo odierno !

    I have been travelling on the Settebello 1965 around Easter with my mom and sister to Venice from Milan, some years ago! I remember very well this train and we were sitting at the front cabin and as a boy I throughly enjoined myself. Thanks for bringing me back on this train. Curiously I don't remember at all the L'Arlecchino! Thanks for sharing this lovely video 👍👍

    I'm thrilled to see this most beautiful of trains, refurbished, and running again.
    I rode the Settebello in 1972, from Roma to Milano, using my Eurail Pass;
    I think it was part of the Trans Europe Express (TEE) route system, which was 1st Class only.

      It was indeed a first class only luxury service but never joined the TEE Family. It was never intended to be. Moreover, dedicated TEE services sets all wore the standard red and cream livery.

      As far as I know it was a TEE for less than 10 years between the 70s and the 80s, mostly because newer trains were more comfortable and weren't on a fixed configuration, still maintaining the 200km/h speed

    Such a nice video Paul, I absolutely love seeing continental Europe through your lens. Also, bravo to the Italians for liking trains, it seems fairly normal in Europe for all classes of people to travel by train and that makes me so happy as I think trains still are the best way to travel.

    I've traveled by train all over Europe for business, and used the high-speed lines when possible. My favorite is the ICE3 trains in Germany. I've traveled on the ICE in Germany, TGV in France, Thalys between Paris and Köln and Ave in Spain. But the l'Arlecchino looks like a destination trip, and has already been added to my bucket list. Thoroughly enjoy your train reviews! As Oliver Twist said "Please, sir, I want some more." From a long time subscriber.

    The Faema Eclipse 61, or E61, is an espresso machine launched by Faema in .. 1961 (yeah) named after the total solar eclipse of that year. It was the first espresso machine with an electric water pump (as opposed to previous lever machines) and it is still in production! So you can still buy a new one, but it is somehow bulky and expensive nowadays. The E61 group head is also still appreciated and it is used by most European prosumer upmarket espresso machines.

    Awesome train, I love modern railways ( like we have one here in the states 🙄…excluding Brightline 👍🏻👍🏻). But I have a special appreciation for the retro trains that have been painstakingly restored and operational and not sitting in a museum…..bravo to those Italians who made this happen!

    I have seen a few videos of this train already but this is best so far. Very enjoyable and really makes you want to do the trip. Would love to arrive in Venice like this. Shows you how advanced the railways were Italy compared to the UK when this train came into service.

    Wow, that’s a special trip! That would be a must visit if I can when I am able to go to Italy.
    I’m hoping that in a few years time that the Brighton Belle (electric Pullman) train will be fully restored and back on the railway

    Curtains, comfortable looking seats that align with the windows, a café car with an espresso machine and a joie de vivre - wow what a train! It would be good to have something like that on the line between Bristol and London. Thanks for the video.

    The train is remarkably well restored!
    It could be compared to the RAe TEE of SBB Historic (one of the 1960s multi-system sets is preserved operational, though it currently only has approval to operate within Switzerland).
    Sadly, the attempt of Deutsche Bahn to restore a VT11 (the German TEE of the 1950s) has been aborted due to cost overruns. A number of restored power cars and passenger cars can now be visited in the railway museums of Koblenz and Augsburg.
    Also in Germany, class 403/404 (1970s Intercity and 1980s Lufthansa Airport Express) is stuck in the middle of restoration, started by National Express and Train Rental International.
    Likewise, Austria has no operational class 4010 unit, just a few museum pieces in various states. It's a huge task to restore and maintain an entire unit! (Luckily I managed to travel in class 4010 when it was still running for real!)

    When I saw your Twitter pics a while back, I was absolutely stoked. And then I couldn't watch your video when it came out and I kinda forgot about it, but man, this is a stunning trip, and they (and yourself!) have absolutely done her right. I can only agree with your words for Fondazione FS, they are on a roll.
    I only had the pleasure of taking the Transsiberiana d'Italia, today renamed as the Ferrovia dei Parchi in the Abbruzzo region, often overlooked for more popular reagions like Tuscany, Sicily or even Umbria and Puglia, I'd guess only Molise is even more off the beaten track in Italy. I wish I could have included more of their trains into my trip.

    This a fabulous restoration for a gem of railway design. The train has much the same design flair of the Italian sports cars of the era. It's a shame the scheduled stops do not include Vincenza, one of my favorite places. Thanks for posting!

    I have loved trains since I was a little girl. I got a train set after begging for it. And I still have it. If I had the money I would have lots of them and have a giant layout. I would even have one of the bigger ones that ran through the yard.

    It's great that a state owned railway has a heritage restoration section; it has done a magnificent job on the setebello.
    Regarding Milano Centrale, built under Mussolini, 2,500 homes were demolished for this project in the 1930s, if I remember correctly. I don't know if the residents were rehoused by the authorities or left homeless to find their own shelter.

      The good ol' fascist "wrecking and restoring pickaxe", there are many examples of it in Italy (luckily all small), one of this is via della Conciliazione and its buildings: the avenue starting from the Tiber in Rome towards Saint Peter was built in the Fascist era and it meant the demolition of the medieval unhealthy neighborhood "Spina di Borgo". In Naples you can find Fascist palaces right next noble palaces in via Toledo and in front of the old neighborhood of the Spanish Quarters, such as the Gallerie d'Italia palace and all the buildings in via Diaz and via Medina, right inside the historic centre. La Spezia is full of fascist architecture, just like Trieste and in Bologna viale Marconi is the fascist scar inside the western portion of the historic centre, inside the walls. In fact if you walk along the viale you will notice that side streets and minor parallel streets lead to old historic houses and buildings hidden by the façades of tall fascist palaces. It was inserted right there without any consideration to make it fit in the urban landscape, rather attempting to hide it.

      hot take, most of Europe did exactly the same just after World War II. And before that, too, much of Paris and London were levelled to be replaced by grand avenues and the construction of the railways.
      In earnest, I think many of those buildings from the fascist era look not too bad, compared to some of the modernist buildings from after the war...

    A great hit by the TH-cam algorithm! I remember our late friend Joan who lived in Arezzo talking about the Settebello while we were Interrailing on slow, late "express" trains back in the 70s. And last month we did Milano-Venezia on a regular EuroCity service, and returned on the Venice Simplon Orient Express; another great restored train but a LOT pricier! So these views were quite familiar, but we obviously didn't get to ride at the front.

    Yes, this is a beautiful train. I would have preferred the rear cabin, gives a more melancholy atmosphere somehow. A 200 km/h speed is not bad at all for such an old train!

    In the states we used to have many interesting and experimental trains like our streamliners, some on occasion are brought out for trips like this but sadly the majority have been scrapped

    Five years ago we travelled to Venice by train. On the way back we travelled Executive class from Venice to Milan, Only eight individual recliner seats in the carriage, complimentary food and drink in the Venice Executive lounge and on the train. Cost was about 50 euro each. Great value for money, though I think that the Arlecchino - Harlequin would have been more interesting. Something to look out for in future.

      Besides Fondazione FS I also know of SBB Historic. Unfortunately most of today's reorganized railway companies don't consider themselves to be in charge of historic trains.

      its not a great idea to be honest.
      uk is done by private companies and as a result has many many times more heritage trains, particularly steam, on the main lines. pick a week and youll find something happening.
      sbb for eg does very little. it was the 175th anniversary of rail in switzerland this year so you'd expect the national heritage operate to put on a show right? nope. 4 steam trains and a few open days. now, the one i opted for-olten-basel and back with their 2-8-0 was excellent but it was basically the only decent mainline run sbb historic did this year. and when we looked round the depot we found most of their fleet in states of repeir. the train i had been on had had two locos cancelled before the 2-8-0 lol.
      likewise mav historic(Hungary's outfit) really doesnt do a lot. i did budapest--gyor with their 4-8-0 last year in a teak carriage with food included. it was again excellent but the programme since has been pretty nothingy.
      fs do some good ones, including some great ones where you get a steam train from milan to lake como/maggiorie and then a paddle steamer on the lake. but these are rare and they run on sundays. and fs trenstorici is down to just 4 operational steam locos for the whole of italy.
      compare to the uks private locos running private charters. the uk just has way more active locos running far longer distances and far more regularly.

      @@uncinarynin there is mav in hungary. but just like sbb they dont really run many heritage trains. cd historic division in czech rep actually run quite a lot of tours and bulgarian railways have a few operating locos in a heritage fleet but i think they may only be for charter.

    Great video. Thanks. My wife and I traveled Milan to Venice and back in June 2012. I don’t recall the exact service we booked. But I do remember we took the “fast” train with AC to Venice and the “local” train without AC on the return. I recommend the fast train.

    10:36 The ETR 700 series is the former Dutch (NS)/Belgium (NMBS) V250 series. Build by AnsaldoBreda in Italy for the HSL service between Amsterdam and Brussels. Only 9 sets (of the ordered 19) have been in active service for 8 months (may 2012 - januari 2013). Due to a lot of defects and even losing complete panels of the bottom while riding through snow in Belgium, the services was revoked after only 8 months. The sets were returned to Italy in 2014. TrenItalia bought the sets of AnsaldoBreda for the Frecciarossa services in 2016 (and are in service since 2017).
