- Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs BMW X3 vs Volvo XC60
A mountain hairpin, a stony unpaved trail, a snow-covered straight or a bend in the driving rain: all extreme situations and ideal places for putting the new #Alfa Romeo's agility and power to the test. Thanks above all to the #Q4 system, that gives all the benefits of all-wheel drive combined with the driving pleasure of a rear-wheel drive. In detail, its architecture includes an active transfer case and front differential designed to meet the specific technical requirements of Alfa Romeo, entailing the rapid-response management of high torque levels, with a compact, lightweight set-up.
Design, engineer and technology are all central to the new Alfa Romeo #Stelvio #SUV Stelvio, but, as tradition demands, its identity as a true Alfa Romeo derives from the beating hearts under the bonnet: 280 HP 2.0 Turbocharged petrol and 2.2 Diesel of 210 HP. They are combined with an automatic 8-speed transmission and Q4 all-wheel drive.
They belong to a new generation of all-aluminium four-cylinder engines that represent the very best of the Group's engine design technology. Both Stelvio engines are built in Italy at the Termoli (petrol) and Pratola Serra (Diesel) plants, in areas assigned only to Alfa Romeo engines, with state-of-the-art processes and methods that put them at the top of their class in terms of performance and fuel economy.
The new HP 2.0 Turbocharged petrol engine (280 HP at launch, 200 HP in the near future) is a 4-cylinder unit built entirely in aluminium with carbon drive shaft, combined with the automatic 8-speed transmission and Q4 all-wheel drive. In addition to MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve actuation, the distinctive features of this engine include "2-in-1" turbo and 200-bar high-pressure direct injection, which pair up to deliver particularly snappy accelerator response across the rev range in addition to first-class fuel-efficiency.
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.0 280 HP turbocharged Petrol engine (peak torque of 400Nm at 2,250 rpm) is best in class in terms of acceleration, powering from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The top speed is 230 km/h.
The #BMW engineers have employed far-reaching chassis modifications to significantly improve the driving dynamics, directional stability and steering feel of the new BMW #X3. The car that emerges is even sportier than its predecessor, yet avoids compromising on ride comfort. Chassis options include M Sport suspension, Dynamic Damper Control, M Sport brakes and variable sport steering.
Two diesel engines and three petrol units will be available from launch (or shortly afterwards) for the new BMW X3. The 265 kW/360 hp BMW X3 M40i (combined fuel consumption: 8.4 - 8.2 l/100 km [33.6 - 34.5 mpg imp]; combined CO2 emissions: 193 - 188 g/km) gives the X3 range its first M Performance Automobile and is joined by a second petrol model in the shape of the BMW X3 xDrive30i producing 185 kW/252 hp (combined fuel consumption: 7.4 l/100 km [38.2 mpg imp]; combined CO2 emissions: 168 g/km). The two diesel models are the BMW X3 xDrive20d with 140 kW/190 hp (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 - 5.0 l/100 km [52.3 - 56.5 mpg imp]; combined CO2 emissions: 142 - 132 g/km) and the BMW X3 xDrive30d developing 195 kW/265 hp (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 - 5.7 l/100 km [47.1 - 49.6 mpg imp]; combined CO2 emissions: 158 - 149 g/km). The BMW X3 20i with 135 kW/184 hp (combined fuel consumption: 7.4 - 7.2 l/100 km [38.2 - 39.2 mpg imp]; combined CO2 emissions: 169 - 165 g/km) and choice of all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive (not in Europe) will follow shortly after the launch of the new X3. All the engine variants will team up as standard with an optimised version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission.
Every #XC60 is extremely well equipped as standard, and comes with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. The engines are all #Volvo's own Drive-E units, which offer exceptional power and efficiency. The range comprises D4 and D5 diesels, a T5 petrol and a petrol-electric T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. Power ranges from 190 to 407 hp, with CO2 emissions from as little as 49 g/km.
The engines in the Volvo XC60 are all 2.0-litre, four-cylinder units. D4 and D5 diesels are available, along with a T5 petrol and a T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid that combines a potent petrol engine with an electric motor.
Both the D4 and D5 have two turbochargers that work sequentially to provide responsive performance at low and high revs. The D5 takes this one stage further with an ingenious Volvo-designed system called PowerPulse. This injects compressed air - which is stored in a small tank in the engine bay - into the path of the first turbocharger to get it spinning when it would otherwise be dormant, such as at very low engine revs.
