    Selecting the right keyboard rig for your worship band can be a daunting task. In this video, I’m going to walk you through the setup we use at our church plant. Rather than spending thousands of dollars on a Nord, Roland, or Yamaha keyboard, we are able to produce amazing sounds with an inexpensive MIDI keyboard and Mainstage running on a Macbook Air. Keep watching this video and you’ll know exactly what to buy and how to set this up at your church.

    Audio Interface - amzn.to/2Pf1ODq (I recommend using this interface instead of using the headphone jack. The headphone jack works but you will want a more powerful computer. I was experiencing some issues with my Macbook Air. With this interface you can go directly from the usb out on your computer to two XLR outputs. Then you can go directly into your sound system. No DI Box Required.

      Is there something that I can use with KeyScape just to help me layer more than 2-3 sounds or at least have several sounds, 8 or more, available to me?

      You don't necessarily need a MacBook, there are other similar softwares. Any budget windows laptop capable of running the software would do. Also you can connect your E443 to PC via MIDI cable (printer cable or USB type B), enable keyboard out and PC mode in the function and get better virtual tones on the software. So what you play gets processed by the software and it'll use the downloaded voices not the one on the Yamaha E443

      1. Midi cable (USB type B to USB A or C depending on your PC)
      2. Get a DAW, AU software like Mix Craft, FL studio.
      3. Get a VST Instrument software from the internet like Lounge Lizard, Velvet, Neo-soul Suitcase, Keyscape.
      5. Open the DAW software (I use mix craft), load the VST Instrument using the DAW software but there are some VSTs like Lounge Lizard which allows you to open directly without a DAW software.
      5. Download Yamaha drivers for E series keyboards (that's if the VST software doesn't detect your keyboard in the setup).

    Looks great, and your sounds are awesome! I did want to share that whenever possible, it is very important to run an external audio interface. I use the Focusrite Pro24. The reason I place such importance on this is that when I use the headphone jack as a stereo output, I experience crossbleeding between the left and right channels, i.e. my click bleeds into the channel the congregation hears. The cheap Realtek sound cards on Macs can't always handle the simple task of keeping the stereo channels separate.

    Great info as always, Jake! I'm itching to check out some of those worship patches! Here's a midi keyboard recommendation for anyone looking to get started in this area. I recently picked up a Novation Launchkey 49 (Note: You can also get this keyboard in 25 or 61 key versions). It's only $199.00, and it not only has the 49 key, semi-weighted keyboard... it also has pitch and modulation wheels, transpose buttons (+ or - octave), so changing keys is a breeze, a 16 pad, color assignable "launchpad" style loop control section (for triggering and stopping 8 different loops or samples), each with it's own fader for individual control of volume (even on the fly), and mine came with a free version of Albleton Live Lite (so you can get started with Ableton and familiarize yourself with the software, with which it works flawlessly). It's a USB unit, so of course, a dedicated laptop is required.

    For my setup, I've been using Yamaha 's PSR S770 for the last few years. This is an incredible piece of hardware that includes wonderful software in it. It wasn't cheap, but is one of the finest arranger keyboards around. Is you need more software it can be bought from Yamaha or developer made software can be had for free from places such as PSR Tutorial. I also use a sustain pedal and an effects pedal. If I need to sing with my music I use a good quality wireless lavalier mic. Further, I'm using a used Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2" with MobileSheets Pro to store, display,and organize my sheet music, plus an AirTurn Ped to do page turning. With this setup I have the ability to play full, live orchestration without any other equipment for medium to small rooms. For large rooms I use whatever sound equipmentis is available or that I can rent. This is a masterful,extremely powerful setup that is still expanding for me, and within the financial limits you've set here.
    God bless you my friend.

    Great video! Got my M-Audio Hammer-88 about a week ago and I'm so impressed with it's built quality for the price, it's bit on the heavy side for travel but the touch and built quality is superb. I'm using the Hammer-88 also with Mainstage on an upgraded late 2012 i7 Mac Mini with 16Gb Corsair Vengeance ram and 512Gb SSD harddrive, and the same patches as per your video.
    The Hammer-88 fits perfectly into Roland - CB-88RL gig bag as it's the same size as a Roland 300NX. The mod and pitch wheels are very smooth. Tested Pianoteq6 demo, oh my, this piano VSTi took the Hammer-88 to the next level.
    There's a lots of questions about the feel of the Hammer-88, I've played on a couple of Yamaha and Roland stage pianos and this really beats them by far. Sturdy keys, a tad spongy, but not so that it's unpleasant or feeling laggy. Once you setup your velocity to your liking this is something to be hard to beat.

    Thanks for the share. We have a Behringer x32 mixer but I don’t feel we’re getting the most out of it as we still learning. I’m looking to get mainstage. Is there a way I could get the most out of the mixer? So, if I load sound patches? from mainstage to the keyboard and the mixer isn’t set/tuned “properly” I may not appreciate the nice sounds. How can I say set the mixer for my keyboard alone in order to get the most out of mainstage and the mixer? I don’t know if my question makes sense. I don’t want the mixer to be a bottle neck after investing in mainstage.
    Finally, what cable do I use with mainstage? Is there a standard cable? Thanks and God bless

    Jake. Can you recommend a web page that explains how to setup MainStage in the more simple setup such as three presets.Perhaps using as an example a piano; a organ, and a synth? Most help I can find seems to start simple and then expands to an elaborate setup. I just want to get a simple set done and then use. Once familiar then I can work on learning the next level.

    This is my experience on my midi journey
    Phase a. Phase b
    Akai a 249. 400
    Casio px5s. 950
    Mac. 1000
    Mac book pro 2400
    Mainstage. 40
    Spectrasonics. 1000
    Audio interface. 200
    Pres. studio 192. 950
    Totals. 1640. 5300
    What you need in a church setting is exceeded by the 1000 spent on Casio px5s. It's sounds are much better than mainstage. They include a very good piano, strings, pads and fully programmable synths with sweeps and other bells and whistles.
    Start with a decent keyboard for under 2k. Then as you can afford, add a laptop, audio interface, and other sounds, maybe Ableton

    Can i use a mini Mac in lieu of the Mac air book?

  • @FindtheShrooms
    @FindtheShrooms ปีที่แล้ว

    I use a Donner DEP 20. 88 key weighted keys for $355 and it actually has some really good on board speakers, and it comes with a great sustain pedal. I think it is an amazing deal for under 400$ if you are looking for something that you can plug into a computer or use by itself. Anyone looking for an affordable keyboard I promise you wont go wrong with it.

    Do you really need two XLR cable to the snake?
    Can I just use 1?
    And for the 3.5mm xlr can i use just one or does it have to have 2 ends?

    • @SerenRogue
      @SerenRogue 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you want stereo you need 2, so essentially if you use one and it is a stereo/panning sound it will be lacking as when ever it is in the right it wont be there unless you somehow make the audio mono.

    I find that my pads make a glitch sound about every 10 seconds when I use this setup.. I’ve been told that I should be running usb out, into an interface to use the interface card rather than my Mac’s audio card. Can you help me understand this? Maybe it’s something about patch level?

    • @Churchfront
      @Churchfront  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tyler. Maybe an audio interface will help with that. I haven't experienced any issues using yet running it as described above. Maybe with more intense patches you'll have those problems.

      I haven't had any issues with the audio card on the MacBook Air. If I run into issues I'll get an interface, but since we've been using it for the past few months and it's working fine, I'd rather just stick with the DI box.

    Hi, Jake! Love this concept but do you know how to do it with an iPad? And if so, what app/interface would you use? Outfitting my keyboard players with a Macbook might be a stretch but everyone has iPad's available. It's be cool to find an audio interface to plug the keyboard in that has an audio out to go to DI and then an app that'll model the same instruments as Main Stage would... Ideas??? Thanks for all the videos, keep up the great work!

    • @Churchfront
      @Churchfront  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not aware of any iPad app that can produce MainStage quality sounds. But I'll definitely keep and eye out and make a video about it if I come across one!

      @jmjimenez47 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ummm.. you can try the Korg Module app.. I think it cost 30 dollars on the app store. It has a bunch of sounds from some of korgs flagship keyboards. Might be something you can check out. You cant layer the sounds or create patches but it does have some pre-installed patches that have piano and strings layered already along with others. just a FYI.. gb!! PS-going to need an apple usb camera connect adapter to go from midi keyboard to ipad/iphone and out through headphone jack and into DI box.

    Great stuff. I still hate how Apple driven most of the info is. The truth is that most (around 82%) of the computers in the world are PC, not MAC. I've used both, and personally hate Apples approach to software. But to each their own. I would love to see more PC based options covered.

    I know this is kind of a stupid question, but would you recommend MainStage 3 pianos, pads, sounds, etc. over say a roland juno series or a yamaha dgx series workstation? I just recently set up a MainStage rig at my church and it sounds amazing to me, even my wife thinks it sounds beautiful. I got the addictive keys plug-in and the pads and strings on MainStage sound dope. I even bought Celebration Essentials online (should deff check it out) and I feel like this rig sounds so professional compared to the workstation we had, like I have more control over the sound I want. But I've been getting negative feedback like what if the laptop somehow fails (which it never has), what if you're ever not here it seems to complicated blah blah blah. Thoughts? Comments?

    • @Churchfront
      @Churchfront  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I for sure think Mainstage is the better way to go. If you’re not there can’t they just use the keyboard?
