I think there's a reason the meet your match comp voice lines aren't talked about. I also think a lot of people have scout wrong, I think most of the community does think of him as more dumb than arrogant, and tbf I think I think I used to think that too. I do like the old him better though, much better. I also don't really think the community cosmetics matter as much to his image cause in every community, fan made projects warp characters to the creators perception of them, or even something completely different because they want to.
2007 TF2 set the beginning and every class was pretty serious but along 2008 came the weapon and writers actually had an outlet to flesh out characters in the descriptions of them. 2009 and updates were accompanied by a comic which just diverted Scout further from his launch-self. Biggest one affected by this is probably Medic. I can't think an original voice-line from Medic that would have supported his character as being outright maniac but it's more apparent now. He was so serious in the beginning but now every time a Scout explodes, 5% change Archimedes will fly out because of his unserious practice
... can you imagine a team shooter game where characters are actual puppets? Not magically animated puppets that walk by themselvels, but like the one in the video, like... you never see the guys whos arms are up their *sses, only their arms, and they shoot each other.
It feels like soldier and scout got too dumbed down comedic relief for the comics, they may not be the smartest but no grown man is getting naked in honey or spending it all on merch??
That’s 100% in character for Soldier. Remember, this knuckle head tried to apply in WW2, didn’t get accepted and just flew there anyways. Soldier is unhinged too, he’s overly offensive to his mates to the point of being borderline racist and drank lead poisoned water during the Gravel Wars (or it’s implied.) This man is quite literally insane. So him being covered in honey and fighting naked isn’t all out of character.
@@waitingforwhoasked6403 And to be honest, when he _originally_ covered himself in honey, it was actually a clever idea at the time as he was originally wearing clothes meant for warm climates and said clothes were falling apart from the cold damage. Honey traps heat, so in the comic where he fought a bear while covered in honey, it was actually a good idea at the time. Unfortunately, the writers took the joke too far and basically made it a "Standard soldier tactic".
You really hit the nail on the head. Love the Scout's original characterization and I'm always a little upset whenever I hear the competitive lines or see some of the comic stuff. This is kinda conjecture, but I feel like the tipping point was Expiration Date. It's a great animation and it plays with Scout's character well, the way he has to suck up his pride and face his insecurities to get Spy to help him with a date for Miss Pauling. It's just from that point onward that's all the Scout was now: an insecure and outwardly pathetic character groveling for attention. What makes the original Scout work in my eyes is how he is kinda embarrassing and dumb if you read into it. like "I am owning you, you fat, bald, fatty fat... fat fat!" is a really stupid and embarrassing line on it's own, but he says it with enough sincerity and gusto that it works. Same thing with the Hippocrates line, he delivers it with enough bite and energy that it counteracts his pronunciation. You can tell that the Scout truly thinks he's a genius for coming up with these schoolyard level insults. Think this more subtle implied stupidity and patheticism is better than being beaten over the head with "hey, this guy is dumb and a loser so don't take him seriously."
Honestly always loved scouts charactization, he trying to be a tough guy but mostly comes of as silly, i mean i dont think they really they downplayed his character too much
.... this video act like a new comic chapter was released every month and somehow we still get updated characterization like anything with TF2's lore had a ongoing series. There's objectively and factually no flanderization because there's no material to enable any flanderization whatsoever. And they still have to actually update the comic after YEARS of it being on an almost permanent hiatus.
Fun fact: according to the comics Scout is 27... however the back of the box of the NECA action figure says he's 21. However the Gravel wars takes place in the summer of 68, and mvm in 71... so how? Well, Valve admited that tf2 had a very convoluted story, even more so than half life. For instance, Spy said in the comics that Miss Pauline was the team's supervisor for at least 10 years wich contredicts the comics themselves... To me, Scout began in the Gravel wars in 21, and then in the comics he's 27
I think scout has always been the charicter thats felt close to his team becuse he dosnt have any other friends, but his mask thay hr tells himself and projects to otheres is his tough guy, arragent persona,
I wonder if there was a behind the scenes reason for this that Valve never told us about, like the "God Save The Dib" movement from the Invader Zim crew. While the show was airing, Nickelodeon informed the team that audiences hated Dib found him to be unfunny, annoying, and boring and even suggested removing him from the show as a whole at one point. In an attempt to make his character more enjoyable, they started to make him the butt of the joke (which lead to the creation of the big-head gag) as well as making him a constant punching bag for characters like Zim and Gaz -- and it worked. Maybe charts revealed that Scout was significantly less popular than the other mercs and so Valve tried to do something similar to keep his reputation alive.
There's a point where I stopped considering the comics as Canon & some in game items. Not just for Scout, but other mercs too. The weird story we came up with between me and several players back in 2012 about ourselves as mercs are more inline with the mercs when we played together than what I see these days. That's saying something honestly. 😅 would I consider that canon? Heck no, but the comradeship we had back then was more believable that whatever the comics came up with. Heck even in Gmod & SFM projects you see the mercs portrayals are much more believable than those. Don't ever stop making them funny & cool Gmod & SFM community 😊
Come on men, He always had things like the lack of self-conciousness, enought to belive he has muscles despite the contrary, which in turn make him a quirky killer. Still competent enought to defeat the bread monster but quirky enought to try to hit on girls with buckets of chiken and chicken out at the end.
I get where you're coming from, but Scout HAS muscles (the older comics show so) and the model isn't that much skinnier than others (talking about the arms), the other mercs just wear baggy clothes, or have more weight to them. Scout is muscular, but with speed and maneuverability in mind. Muscles not only weigh something, they can impair the range of your movement, so yeah. It's like comparing an olympic runner to the weight thrower. those are some chunky bois, but the runner isn't a wimp because he looks "skinny" Next to that, is he?
My interpretation of Scout was always the stereotypical toxic tryhard gamer stereotype. He's more of a joke character, and you can't take him too seriously outside of the context of the game. I pretty much consider Scunt to be canon. Hell, even his 4th wall breaking lines hint at this, with "Go ahead, rage quit, I dare you!", and "I am owning you you fat bald bastard!" He's the equivalent to the squeaker talking shit about doing your mom, and somehow also top scoring the entire match.
I mean cosmetics aren't meant to be lore accurate anything. Even some of the original hats are comedic. (Also the fact by tf2 lore, having a ridiculous amount of ridiculous hats is a sign of high status, if the mercs would even care. Well if anything scout would care the most about wearing ridiculous hats).
Scout is great. Scout is just the best, I really love playing as him and I enjoy it. I wouldn’t be his friend but I would absolutely love to piss him off. I love scout he’s funny as fuck. ITS WORSE HE DIED IN THE COMIC 😭 But I am sad they ruined scout in the comics though :,) He got shot down and bullied.

I sure do wonder what that other cyan text says!
He is back
8:29 was him being sarcastic lol
2007 TF2 set the beginning and every class was pretty serious but along 2008 came the weapon and writers actually had an outlet to flesh out characters in the descriptions of them. 2009 and updates were accompanied by a comic which just diverted Scout further from his launch-self.
Biggest one affected by this is probably Medic. I can't think an original voice-line from Medic that would have supported his character as being outright maniac but it's more apparent now. He was so serious in the beginning but now every time a Scout explodes, 5% change Archimedes will fly out because of his unserious practice
This was a really good video

... can you imagine a team shooter game where characters are actual puppets?
@@waitingforwhoasked6403doesn’t mean it’s good or funny though…

@@waitingforwhoasked6403 And to be honest, when he _originally_ covered himself in honey, it was actually a clever idea at the time as he was originally wearing clothes meant for warm climates and said clothes were falling apart from the cold damage.
Honey traps heat, so in the comic where he fought a bear while covered in honey, it was actually a good idea at the time.
Unfortunately, the writers took the joke too far and basically made it a "Standard soldier tactic".

Bro gets mauled at the end
Fun fact scouts primary was never going to be a mac 10 it was going to be originally a nail gun :3
Straight up got L4D2'd at the end, like damn.
Think this more subtle implied stupidity and patheticism is better than being beaten over the head with "hey, this guy is dumb and a loser so don't take him seriously."
you should be upset about hearing any mym voiceline, theyre awful

oh god he has teeth and a nose now

Honestly always loved scouts charactization, he trying to be a tough guy but mostly comes of as silly, i mean i dont think they really they downplayed his character too much

I feel like this video will turn into an arg any second because of the scout doll 💀
.... this video act like a new comic chapter was released every month and somehow we still get updated characterization like anything with TF2's lore had a ongoing series. There's objectively and factually no flanderization because there's no material to enable any flanderization whatsoever. And they still have to actually update the comic after YEARS of it being on an almost permanent hiatus.
You can be both, look at flat earthers
Fun fact: according to the comics Scout is 27... however the back of the box of the NECA action figure says he's 21. However the Gravel wars takes place in the summer of 68, and mvm in 71... so how?
Well, Valve admited that tf2 had a very convoluted story, even more so than half life. For instance, Spy said in the comics that Miss Pauline was the team's supervisor for at least 10 years wich contredicts the comics themselves...
To me, Scout began in the Gravel wars in 21, and then in the comics he's 27
I think scout has always been the charicter thats felt close to his team becuse he dosnt have any other friends, but his mask thay hr tells himself and projects to otheres is his tough guy, arragent persona,
I didnt learn anything from this video.

Wow I'm not the only one mad about this.
Nice
2:42 Salazzle 😏
And soldier flanderised
Not really. Soldier was always dumb. And it is explained that Soldier is getting brain damage from lead in 2 Forts water supply.

1. He's more fun like this
Come on men, He always had things like the lack of self-conciousness, enought to belive he has muscles despite the contrary, which in turn make him a quirky killer.
PIKMIN 2 HOLY BASED
its because he drank lead water in the comics
So for starter we need tougher looking cosmetics for scout?
rip scout
meet the scumbass
My interpretation of Scout was always the stereotypical toxic tryhard gamer stereotype. He's more of a joke character, and you can't take him too seriously outside of the context of the game. I pretty much consider Scunt to be canon. Hell, even his 4th wall breaking lines hint at this, with "Go ahead, rage quit, I dare you!", and "I am owning you you fat bald bastard!" He's the equivalent to the squeaker talking shit about doing your mom, and somehow also top scoring the entire match.
Counter argument:
Scout IS silly
louie
I mean cosmetics aren't meant to be lore accurate anything. Even some of the original hats are comedic. (Also the fact by tf2 lore, having a ridiculous amount of ridiculous hats is a sign of high status, if the mercs would even care. Well if anything scout would care the most about wearing ridiculous hats).
Scout is obsessed with Tom Jones because for some reason Tom Jones was a common Tf2 community joke like a decade ago
I see Jerma985 when I look at scout
Good video, however, the nose on scout looks pretty weird. Keep it up
