I was going to talk about something alot like this by the taco stand, so this was very cool. Great video and it made me feel better to see you smiling, from one Brian to another. I love finding sleeper cards in old sets tbh, looking through cards for hours as a kid back in the LCS. Great times.
Jank cards are much more fun than the insane power that wotc prints nowadays. I'd be down for a jank set full of ridiculous (not o.p.) combos that are hard to pull off. That's my idea of fun.
Reposting from my comment earlier; To me, Jank is less of a defined, hard-and-fast thing, and more of a combination of qualities, that upon reaching a threshold combine to make something Jank. Qualities that increase “Jank Level” include: - Weird or unusual/unexpected effects - Low price on the card - Having no *immediate* effect on the board state - Being more situational than widely applicable - - ^Related to above; requiring very specific or strange deckbuilds to function well - Making players around the table mutter in confusion and/or question why you’re playing the card Once a card or combination of cards has reached a certain threshold of those qualia, it is then “Jank”. It doesn’t need to have all those qualities, but it needs to have at least some of them. Worth noting, things can become more or less jank over time; Dark Depths was really janky before the Thespian Stage/Vampire Hexmage combos were found.
I honestly would think listing the combos possible with the cards adds more than just discussing the cards in isolation; it illustrates how a seemingly harmless card can cause mass destruction or annoyance.
Yeah I thought that the second round was decided by that type of discussion even. I didn’t view it as a “two card combo”, just an explanation of its uses. Would love more of that expansion of ideas
The true winner was the audience on this one. Bringing jank to people's eyes makes all of our games a little more full of spice. Thank you prof and thank you Ced and Ken. This was a much refreshing and entertaining video to see! (I hope we get more jank episodes because a friend of mine would like to add more jank to his janky decks. The friend is me.)
What makes quicksilver fountain so freaking great is if you bounce it during the end step of the opponent before your upkeep then replay it on your turn it won't affect PLUS if you can continue to bounce it the floor counter STAYS on the lands, and the ability DOES NOT go away, so their lands are PERMANENTLY islands for the remainder of the match. @@Spootprime Yup, says so in the rulings: "If you control two Anointed Processions, then the number of tokens created is four times the original number. Spellweaver volute is such as sweet card! Just wanted to mention two things:
1) the mystery booster foil version is much cheaper (25c from card kingdom I think) than the original printing and the foiling looks lovely!
2) it plays a copy of the instant, doesn’t cast it, so if you have a deck that relies on cast triggers just be aware I don’t think it triggers
where is "mirror of fate"? aka the self mill glass cannon that more often than not just shoots you deck into oblivion and makes you lose...
And if you are able to copy it you have your own Doomsday. ;)
People call it jank, but if they think that exiling your threats worked they were wrong. Also if you can recurr it and exile stuff from your graveyard, you can get anything you need at anytime
Sounds like the way I use Demonic Consultation
Turn one consultation for booster tutor lets go
I can’t help but smile every time Ken says something - what a funny dude. Ced is a blast to watch too! Thank you for doing this!
lmao "Hadou-Ken" is such a great nickname
Coming back here after the Jank Off and seeing Ken pull off that Reflections combo is so funny. Just filing away the jank.
My favorite jank card...
Cleansing Wildlife.
Autocorrect?
That was a sick burn! (get it?) For real tho, tf you on rn, lol?
Loved this video, Ken and Ced were an amazing addition to prof. Every second was a gift
I laughed, and i hardly ever do, nice stuff y'all.
Hey Prof! I'd love to see this show come back maybe with a janky combo twist? Either way I love it!
Lmao that judge was great, hes really funny
I love this idea! This was really fun and I can’t wait to see more! If I could offer up a suggestion. Zur’s weirding is $0.35 and grinds games to a halt. With the abundance of life in commander people have no problem stopping someone from drawing a problematic card. I love this in any graveyard strategy where I can pull things out of the graveyard. Also it’s a handy way to check for counter spells before you try and combo off if that’s your thing. 😎
Is no one gonna talk about how the drawback of Spellweaver Volute did not get mentioned of only casting the certain instant once then you have to pick another one?????
He skipped right over that part... I was saying Whoa whoa you skipped the drawback.
@@Proudfootzorz I'd call that upside rather than a drawback. You get to keep picking new stuff and you can keep opponents from recurring their spells.
@@evanorie535 that's one way to look at it yeah. The way he read it though I thought you could just keep copying the one spell over and over when you find a good one.
@@evanorie535 true!
Just meant the downside of only getting the spell once, but you can get some sweet other instants too if they're there
very cute video. I have to say the judge really brought his A game and the cards were for the most part fun and felt like jank I didnt see before. I love seeing videos like this come up every now and then
Hivemind better be on this list.
Edit: Damn it.
For about five minutes I thought Teferi was just a really quiet and angry fourth person on the show xD
IMHO jank are cards we love to play because they are funny but not effective.
Nice concept, discovered your great guests with this video. I will watch future episodes with great pleasure :D
The 45 people who disliked were laughing to hard and hit the wrong button.
Been a sub for years and love your content but this is probably my favorite you have done thus far. Can’t wait to see more jank!
Love this video. I too have picked up some of these cards. A favorite jank card has to be Dragon Whisperer, a mediocre 2 mana 2/2 that requires more mana to be sunk to be good. But after a late game wipe, dropping this down and pumping it with flying and a dragon's breath effect, or if really desperate, get that dragon token out!
I love the One More Mana guys! Glad to see another collab with them
This was so entertaining to watch, laughed out loud multiple timrs! Well made :-D Heading over to One More Mana!
hearing Ken say "... and queen plays princes of the universe" to describe an epic moment (and highlander, no less) was the highlight of my day. great content, as always.
Please give us more videos like this, or even better more rounds of judge of jank!
Saw this video after Ken used the reflection combo himself. What a wild coincidence that he discovered and abused this combo on the same channel
I love the chemistry and being introduced to other perspectives from the Magic community. Thanks Professor!
Love this video, also glad to find a new MtG page to follow!!
I love this type of video, please do more of them, very educational as well. I did subscribe to them, they have a lot of good attitude I love.
I know I'm old when I played with some of these cards when they were in type II and in the early days of EDH....great content
