I often have a hard time explaining why I love magic the gathering to my close friends and family. My mom especially is from a very traditional background and has never really liked that I play it. Describing it as a mental combat similar to chess I think will help me a lot moving forward! Thanks y’all!!!

I stated in another video that you had to slow down and let other people talk in your interviews. You probably haven't read that comment, but I will still say it was a pleasure to watch an interview where you gave your guest the full treatment of letting them speak and not interupting. Your channel is great Prof, and keep up the good work! :)
How has this channel never popped up in any of my feeds....I've watched all of 2 videos and know this is the exact kind of commander content I'm looking for! One More Mana is exceptional.
At 21:57 this is why I love chain of vapor because it allows me to respond to answer by bouncing another’s players permanent and saying you copy it and it’s great
Prof, I know you got some grief from people telling you that you din't have to worry about changing your style and didn't want you to beat yourself up over being more inclusive, but the amount of positive comments for these guys from people who have never seen them is really incredible. I'm glad to see people using their platform to promote equality, whatever that may be. You have clearly made a concerted effort recently to go in this direction and I am nothing but impressed. Keep it up, and never feel guilty about wanting to make yourself better. I love seeing diversity at my LGS, it puts a smile on my face to see kids, boys and girls, at my LGS gawking over a pack fresh mythic or correcting each other on technicalities in rules or interaction that I couldn't even hope to see, and I can't wait to see that group of people become even more diverse. It can only make us a stronger community to strive for equal representation, and in today's era, media like this is where that starts. People look up to you for great content, and because of this a lot of new people will be looking up to One More Mana for great content, and if that makes someone who was previously uncomfortable feel comfortable going to their LGS for a draft night, it's a huge win for all. Thank you to all involved here!!
I love these two. One thing that helped me in commander with weaker decks was a background in poker. Magic is essentially a game of hidden information and if you are watching for tells and signals in play patterns you can get a lot of value. What are their actions saying, and being aware of what you are saying in your lines of play.
A paired rule to 'Say less than is necessary' is to make sure to mask signals with noise; if there is a lot of unhelpful and necessary information flooding your opponent's attention it's harder for them to see the important information when it's there, or even know what is actually important and what is not. For instance, just playing with the cards in your hand in the exact way they describe when nothing is actually going on, basically wasting their mental energy trying to figure out why you are doing something that is meaningless. Create actions your opponents think are meaningful to waste their time and cover up those that actually are. Also, the best utilization of 'protect your reputation' for me is to develop the reputation of someone that doesn't bluff and can and will do what they say they will do if tested...so that you can bluff at infrequent but important moments and be believed easily.
This is such a smart & insightful conversation! Probably one of the best of Prof's Untitled Magic: The Gathering Podcast. Please, make them recurring guests!
Protecting your reputation reminds me of attending the Conspiracy 2 launch day event. I sat down at the table, I was playing a really cool Weight Advantage deck, the guy across from me was super friendly, there was a kid next to me who was maybe 13 who seemed likable, and then in the corner opposite me was a guy who was complaining the entire time. Evidently, he had some kind of history with the 13 year old, but he was smack talking him from Turn 1, "If we were playing Modern I'd have already beaten you," and around Turn 5 he said something to the effect of Fuck you to this kid, and the other guy at the table and I were like, "All right, man, that's enough, this is supposed to be fun." He backed off a little bit, but first chance I had, I took him out with a full swing from my board. No one attacked me that turn, because in the words of the guy across from me, "That dude was being unnecessary."

Prof, I absolutely love how you've been intentionally seeking out and talking to POC content creators lately. Representation matters and you doing this is significant, meaningful, and it speaks a great deal to your character.

@@Pinetree747 100% disagree, we shouldn't be uncomfortable talking about race relations. Racism is not tied to your own personal beliefs, it is systemic. Honestly, an omission of race is polarizing because it invalidates my personal experiences as a person of color.
This was great! These laws of power breakdowns have really spoken to me--and there are a lot of things they bring up here which I want to incorporate into my own gameplay!
The best thing about Scheming Symmetry is that it puts it on the top of the deck. "I don't have an answer but I can have you tutor for it. " "Why don't you tutor for it?" "I can't draw it until next turn, but you will before they go again" Now you've talked your opponent into wasting their draw and mana on removal while you tutored any card you want for 1.
Prisoner's Dilemma, and you've basically confirmed that you're gonna sell them out. They may as well get what they want and bank on the scary thing getting handled later. They're screwed regardless, they may as well go for more independent value.
What I used to do when playing with my friends in big group games is give them the best advice possible and tell them their optimal play, they'd then procede to do anything else.
14:52 It's actually the opposite for me. When I put my cards on the table I exactly know whats in them and know what I will do the next turn and know what kind of anwers I have in them should the circumstances change, if I'm playing combo, chances are that y'all die at the next opportunity :D I generally put my cards down quite a lot I think. The part about looking at the hands of other ppl is quite a good tip overall - sadly it doesn't work at all in my playgroup since we all are aware of it from playing Skat (and generally playing with each other for a long time)
Protecting your reputation is definitely important. No one at my card shop has ever broken an agreement (on purpose). If someone were to break an agreement, I'm not even sure what would happen.
Oh my! This is a great video. The three of you have such great chemistry. I hope you guys get together for more content in the near future. Thanks Prof for introducing me to another awesome channel.
I found this very interesting! I don't really know how americans go about with Commander but here in Brazil most of these tactics are well known by most players and are not wellcome in the majority of tables, as comunicative players we prize people with good arguments and who are truthfull to their plays (say you don't have a counterspeel just to burn one of your friends cards are marked by the rest of the table and you're gonna be called out for it later) the one with most balance in their plays and politics has the highest chance to win. Never Outshine the Master : I believe that working on your Threat Assessment skills is better than this "Rule", don't just persecute the guy playing with Sisay, Breya, Ur Dragon, or whatever they are playing (Except GAAIV or Sen Triplets - Those people doesn't have souls), just remove their commander or combo piece if they are getting out of hand, don't just shun him (her) out of the game because you know their commander is strong. Always Say Less Than Necessary : Here we see this as suspicious, if someone is avoiding answering a question or is being sneeky this person normally gets focused because the other players are going to point that out and the player is going to have to justify themselves or take the heat. (The Cyclonic Rift situation most people would just play things and if the guy has it doesn't matter, he is going to take the heat for playing it anyway) Conceal Your Intention : This one is ok, just have to point out that most tables here, to keep shufling your hand is seen as douchbag move (you look like a smug bastard) and you are probably going to be known as "that player", just draw your hand and don't reorganize them, if you want to, just do it under the table and yes making pokerfaces and looking at peoples hands is kind of creepy, this is not poker. Protect Your Reputation : Just be yourself, here i'd like to say i see myself as someone like Josh Lee Kwai, you are destroying something of mine just for the lolz i'm going persecute you and make your game miserable, if not in this game, the next, but i prefer to lose a game and make a point than to be seen as the guy who let things pass and do nothing about it. Win Through Your Actions : Self explanatory, but i interject that you can be political without being a douchbag or a false person (normally the smug one with a smile making opressive plays) i know when i'm being opressive and sometimes i just point it out that i am really the threat and that the table should try to stop me, being someone that points the truth is not a sign of weakness and can be used to your advantage if not in the current game, the next. Avoid the Unlucky and the Unhappy: Here we call it "kicking a dead dog" if you are ahead and just hitting someone without any justification with them asking why are you hitting them and you answer like they said..."Just shut up and take the hit" that makes the blood boil, you probably will be seen as the guy no one wants to make a deal with because you are somewhat a ruthless player, the opponent is probably going to hold a grudge and latch to you to make your life miserable. (because sometimes the feeling of killing that player is better than winning) Ps. Scheming Symmetry would NEVER work the way they are saying, 99% or the players would just Up the Deal with something like, Ok i will find it BUT in return you do NOT combo off AND don't do anything to my board and life total for the next 2 turns...Tutoring is that powerfull to make much better deals! And if by any chance you don't keep your word you might as well take Scheming Symmetry out of your deck because from now on the opponents are just gonna tutor for anything they want and don't care about what you have to say. I'm not trying to be disrespectfull in any way that's just the way i normally play and see Brazilian players act, i am open to all kinds of opinion and even playing with other people from other countries to see how it is and sorry if my english is wrong in anyway, Peace. o/
Yuck, can't imagine playing in such a judgey, self-righteous meta that tries to micromanage people's behavior like that. Just let people play the game the way they want to. If I want to attack someone, I shouldn't need to submit a request to the morality police to do so.
I think it's wise to always press the attack regardless of your opponents Mana or draw state. It may seem cold but i don't think it is. Attacking openings is simply how to win the game. Unless your playing a very casual game, or with a close friend, it would seem like a good idea to always use that approach to ensure you don't give the opponent an advantage.
I gotta share a cautionary tale of Scheming Symmetry. I was the problem, with a flipped Ormendahl. The caster of symmetry asked who had an exile effect, and Edgar Markov said "yes". He also asked "btw, do I reveal?" "No, it's a true tutor, you don't need to prove what you got." Captivating Vampire: tap 5 vampires you control, gain control of target creature.
Well, that sounds like a problem of wording. Obviously the caster of Scheming Symmetry should have asked, "If I target you with this, will you tutor for an exile effect?" Captivating Vampire isn't an exile effect, but the person simply asked him if he HAD an exile effect in his deck (which he certainly did) but wasn't asked to tutor for it. Fair play, in my legal mind.
Ahah that's fun, and legal I think But if the Edgar Markov player was at the table with perfect strangers that's not very welcoming, if the other players were his playgroup that's smart and a sign that being precise when making a deal is important
@@jessicalepins1433 - I agree with you that in the context of being at a table of players who might be newer to the game or total strangers this would be a pretty shady thing to do. But then again, it is sort of on flavor for the card "SCHEMING Symmetry".
Speaking of scheming symmetry, LOVE that card. It’s my signature spell for nicol bolas. I’ll play it, THEN SURPRISE! God pharaoh takes the card I allowed you to have.

Loved this episode! Love that you have been using your platform to put eyes on these smaller channels. Absolutely subscribing to these guys.
Great advice for casual deck design.
The best thing about Scheming Symmetry is that it puts it on the top of the deck.
"I don't have an answer but I can have you tutor for it. "
"Why don't you tutor for it?"
"I can't draw it until next turn, but you will before they go again"
Now you've talked your opponent into wasting their draw and mana on removal while you tutored any card you want for 1.
"The people at the table are resources" Preach! I've been trying to tell my playgroup this FOREVER! These guys are on point. Insta-Sub
The folks at one more mana seem to have their heads on straight ty for bringing them to our attention.
14:52 It's actually the opposite for me. When I put my cards on the table I exactly know whats in them and know what I will do the next turn and know what kind of anwers I have in them should the circumstances change, if I'm playing combo, chances are that y'all die at the next opportunity :D
I generally put my cards down quite a lot I think.
Thanks for taking time to show new content creators. ^^
Never Outshine the Master
: I believe that working on your Threat Assessment skills is better than this "Rule", don't just persecute the guy playing with Sisay, Breya, Ur Dragon, or whatever they are playing (Except GAAIV or Sen Triplets - Those people doesn't have souls), just remove their commander or combo piece if they are getting out of hand, don't just shun him (her) out of the game because you know their commander is strong.
Always Say Less Than Necessary
: Here we see this as suspicious, if someone is avoiding answering a question or is being sneeky this person normally gets focused because the other players are going to point that out and the player is going to have to justify themselves or take the heat. (The Cyclonic Rift situation most people would just play things and if the guy has it doesn't matter, he is going to take the heat for playing it anyway)
Conceal Your Intention
: This one is ok, just have to point out that most tables here, to keep shufling your hand is seen as douchbag move (you look like a smug bastard) and you are probably going to be known as "that player", just draw your hand and don't reorganize them, if you want to, just do it under the table and yes making pokerfaces and looking at peoples hands is kind of creepy, this is not poker.
Protect Your Reputation
: Just be yourself, here i'd like to say i see myself as someone like Josh Lee Kwai, you are destroying something of mine just for the lolz i'm going persecute you and make your game miserable, if not in this game, the next, but i prefer to lose a game and make a point than to be seen as the guy who let things pass and do nothing about it.
Win Through Your Actions
: Self explanatory, but i interject that you can be political without being a douchbag or a false person (normally the smug one with a smile making opressive plays) i know when i'm being opressive and sometimes i just point it out that i am really the threat and that the table should try to stop me, being someone that points the truth is not a sign of weakness and can be used to your advantage if not in the current game, the next.
(because sometimes the feeling of killing that player is better than winning)
Ps.
Learned a lot from this, thanks guys
First gameplay clip shows them playing Traxos, me:"These guys seem swell."
These guys are funny! Definitely checking out One More Mana!
I want to know more about this Secret Commander they mentioned...
Never heard of this channel. Im going to check them out. One more mana.
Ahah that's fun, and legal I think
But if the Edgar Markov player was at the table with perfect strangers that's not very welcoming, if the other players were his playgroup that's smart and a sign that being precise when making a deal is important
@@jessicalepins1433 - I agree with you that in the context of being at a table of players who might be newer to the game or total strangers this would be a pretty shady thing to do. But then again, it is sort of on flavor for the card "SCHEMING Symmetry".
Hey Prof. Gotta say, I think it’s really cool how you’re bringing other content creators on your channel
Speaking of scheming symmetry, LOVE that card. It’s my signature spell for nicol bolas. I’ll play it, THEN SURPRISE! God pharaoh takes the card I allowed you to have.
Thank you very much for introducing me to these folks. Very much looking forward to their content =D
Glad to hear it!
