That random San Pellegrino Blood Orange in the stack of La Croix. Good taste, there, Prof. Lush pro-tip: the San Pellegrino Grapefruit and gin is an amazing alternative to a gin and tonic.
I actually do play Onslaught. It's amazing in a deck with effects like - Willbreaker - Dismiss into Dream - Cowardice - Verity Circle - Horobi, Death's Wail
When I saw the title of this I instantly shouted. "Mark of Fury!" and then told my self "Naw, no one plays that but me, and no one even knows about it. there's no way he'll mention it. " glad I was wrong.
another 1 drop enchantment worth looking into is dust corona. while it can't be combat tricked like mark of fury, a +2 power and anti-flying tech for 1 red is always nice to have. plus, if the creature does have flying, it basically makes it unblockable! Creature side, orcish lumberjack is another good 1 red drop. while you'd play it in a gruul deck, it can turn your tapped forests into even MORE mana, which can help propel you into a big spell really quick. Add in land recursion, and you have a big mana producer right there. (on a side note, I think that Tinder wall will be featured in the 1 drop Green video, due to its mana acceleration. If you combo that with orcish lumberjack, you can get a 6 mana spell out on TURN 2.)
MASS HYSTERIA! Its a little more expensive now but is a great card for super aggressive commander decks. Its effective for early game ramp for mana dorks or (because its low CMC) it can even be good late game to haste in a clutch to give a needed big creature haste. It also has the benefit in tap activated creature effects like Brion Stout Arm. It has the downside of being a global effect but it can be negated in conjunction with Authority of the Counsels or Blind Obedience.
Overmaster is a kl 1 mana red spell, prevents your next instant or sorcery being countered, also draws a card, so it's never completely dead. You can also use it to bait out a counterspells and hope they're bluffing a 2nd one. Obviously very good if you're about to cast a finisher.
QUESTION: I really like the entertaining way you do your ads/promotions. I wonder, did you have to run your idea by the company first? Like, did you have to tell La Croix how you were going to do their product promotion first? Or did they trust you to just do whatever?
Chirurgeon: Kye-ur-gin. From Latin chirurgia, and originally Greek kheirourgos. Excellent include here, and the Madonna reference probably also went right over the heads of most viewers. :D
No mention of Quest for the Pure Flame? If you're running red, all you have to do is inflict 4 damage to your opponents then you have an enchantment that doubles all damage dealt by sources you control for an entire turn for just 1 red mana. I've used it many times to finish off a game from out of nowhere.
I feel like not alot of people know about winds of change. Also a good, but unfortunately expensive red 1 drop, allows for a full board wheel for 1 mana. This can be useful when you have a bad hand and your oppenents have good hands or someone just searched for their game winning card and has tapped out. It doesnt draw you 7, it will draw your have as it currently is but still a good card
Actually had a professor at university that was exactly like that. Also how do you not know who Cardi B is? She's from another planet and she literally did all the sound effects for Star Wars.
Curse of Opulence.... Its a free bait to attack others and a simple ramp and Thud is also a good option to just ad some extra dmg with something your sure to loose anyways :D
I’ve always viewed Shatering spree as better than Vandal blast since the replicate ability making copies is harder to deal with over Vandalblast that even if overloaded it could get countered.
This is probably the best of these videos that I've seen. Great suggestions. I built a mono-red deck recently and found Mark of Fury and was surprised that I never see it played. It's so good!
Not 1 mana, but people really underestimate 'Hate Mirage'. a 4 mana card that makes 2 token copies of your opponents creatures with haste 'till end of turn. Which late-game helps finishing games and earlier into the game it can copy opponent's value creatures letting you ramp or draw. It's way way better than you'd think
My pick: Mass Hysteria - Enchantment - ALL creatures have haste Literally a red Concordant Crossroads, great for low curve aggro and mana-efficient combo decks that need the haste for surprise factor
What is your opinion on Racecourse Fury/Footfall Crater and Hammerhand/Cartouche of Zeal? Red has quite a lot of things in 1-mana slot that give haste, but which ones are objectively better?
In edh I think footfall is better since/when trample is relevant.Plus, you can cycle it if it doesn't fit what you need at that moment. Recurring enchantments are better for prowess or other triggers though.
Brand is a cheeky 1 drop. Instant, "Gain control of all permanents you own. | Cycling 2." Really hoses Your-deck.dek and if it's not relevant in the matchup, at least it cycles. Brutal Suppression has some wombo possibilities, but it's really way too niche unless you do a zedru prison deck. Crown of Flames is a nice enchantment aura that gives firebreathing and has "R:Return Crown of Flames to its owner's hand." so it's in a similar niche to mark of fury. Firestorm is a great fit for any deck that can stomach to discard, either because it themes around madness or is a wheel.dek. "As an additional cost to cast this spell, discard X cards. | Firestorm deals X damage to each of X targets." The one downside is that you can only do as much damage as you have valid targets / cards in hand. Mob Mentality is a cute enchantment aura that gives trample and "+X/+0 where x is the number of creatures attacking [cc]." Norin the Wary is a one drop, but this is a list of one drops no one is using, so... Outmaneuver gives escentually gives X creatures 'super trample'. Overmastery reads "The next instant or sorcery spell you cast this turn can't be countered. | Draw a card." A really nice cantrip which either forces a counterspell out on the threat of something big getting forced through or forces something big through. I've been running slumbering dragon for a long time ["Flying | Slumbering Dragon can't attack or block unless it has five or more +1/+1 counters on it. |Whenever a creature attacks you or a planeswalker you control, put a +1/+1 counter on Slumbering Dragon."] and I've never in my life had it turn on, because people don't attack you when you have a slumbering dragon out because no one wants you to have a 1 drop 8/8 flyer.
I totally agree with this list. Some I play or have played. And, because of this video, I now want to put those cards back in my decks. The others I actually want to use in another deck I haven't yet made. So, I really loved this episode and appreciated it. Thanks!
Not to barge in to this conversation but Barge In can be a fun combat trick for 1 red mana. In a go wide strategy with anthem effects, or if you have a lot of big bodies on the board, it can ensure some damage gets through and slightly buffs a creature to boot. In a deck like Zara, Hedron Grinder you can buff the entire team and give everything trample.
Would have loved a shout out to Weight of Spires. 1 mana deal damage to something based on the non-basic land count of its controller at instant speed is honestly really strong as a removal spell option for Red. Since red's removal is primarily damage based it can easily miss important creatures if you're trying to keep the cost of the spell low. This gets around that normal issue since non-basics are plentiful in commander and this will reasonably deal +5 damage and at that amount it is going to kill most things you care about.
by the way, feint might spike now because of the brand new commander Neyith of the dire Hunt and that's because you can double a creature's power and give it a luring effect (which means all creatures have to block it if able) so the creature you powered up becomes block you cast feint on it you tap all the creatures thus leaving them open for everyone to take that player down before they untap (if that's players turn is last before your) Ney of the Dire Hu
I tend to play faithless looting pretty commonly and winds of change may warrant a mention for resetting a poor hand or potentially messing up an opponent's tutor.
Shattering spree has an other very good upside. It is very hard to counter. Unless they have a stifle like effect you're most likely going to blow up all the artifacts that you want. You can target an artifact multiple times to get through counters.
Here's two that I feel strongly should make the list. They're not as old, but they are very unused according to EDHREC. Molten Vortex only sees play in 300 decks, and while it doesn't have the sweeping effect of Bloodfire Dwarf, it deals 2 damage and can hit fliers. I find it incredibly useful for removing hatebears, combo pieces, and smaller commanders without needing yo use up my premium removal spells to do so. Weight of Spires only sees play in 22 decks. While it may not be the best against mono-colored decks, most of the time there is always going to be someone playing 3+ colors at the table and this card is going to act like your handy-dandy Path to Exile in red against them. This card costs pennies, but its the most effective when playing against people who spend tons of money on their decks.
Bloodlust Inciter is a 1 mana card in red that I really like when playing a commander that wants to swing on the turn it enters the battlefield. I run this little guy in my Vaevictis Asmadi the Dire deck.
The skits are becoming my favorite part of the videos - careful there Prof, I may soon be displeased for magic content on this magic channel, and request only more funny bits!
Maybe artifact blast in mono-red decks. Being able to counter an artifact for one mana seems pretty strong being that there are some artifacts that have huge impacts from the moment they hit the table.
I like false orders inclusion as I run it. One card that is a possible miss, depending on your playgroup. Soldier of Fortune. r tap, shuffle target player's library. Can nerf the Tutor to top of deck abilities, scry, fate seal, etc.
There's absolutely no way Proff doesn't know who Melissa Ethridge is. Big Red Letter Media energy I love it. I feeeeel the excitement coming from those Raycons.
I like Martyr of Ashes more in the Bloodfire Dward spot. All the same things apply if you have at least 1 red card in your hand but it can do so much more.
If Master of Cruelties is blocked, then removing its blocker won’t cause it’s triggered ability to proc, since the point at which the ability checks to see if it attacked and wasn’t blocked is immediately before priority in the declare blockers step. Also, Chirurgeon can’t save a creature from Rapid Hybridization, since it’s got that pesky “can’t be regenerated” text on it.
Another great one mana red card is the new Weaponize the Monsters from Ikoria. Yeah, it's got the 2 mana activation, but it can turn any of your creatures (especially if you have token generation) into a Shock. I love that it's any target, too. It's nifty way in commander to take out opposing planeswalkers hiding behind an army, or finish off some creature post-combat when two other players are duking it out.
False Orders wouldn't give you the trigger from Master of Cruelties if it was blocked previously. The time for that trigger to happen has already passed, regardless of whether Master of Cruelties remains blocked or not. You can absolutely use False Orders to make Master of Cruelties unblocked, but it will just deal its regular 1 damage in that case.
Another great 1 mana red card is anything but unknown, but it's still underrated in commander: Lightning Bolt! It removes creatures, it can finish off a player that was too greedy with using their life as a resource, and it can deal with planeswalkers!
I'd add Krark-Clan Shaman and Crown of Flames to the list. Krark-Clan is at least better than the Bloodfire Dwarf who does pretty much the same thing but can't be activated multiple times to increase its effectiveness before dying. Similar to one of the reasons Gorilla Shaman is so good, if your deck ever makes a bunch of junky clue/treasure tokens, he's just a wrath and can be a very selective wrath at that. Crown of Flames triggers prowess and constellation and other similar effects while making any threat you have a little more potent including your commander which is nice.
As the president of Kaiba Corporation I love the color red. It’s how I do business, which reminds me, please trade your cards to me for a brand new duel disk to make your MTG experience better! Toodles. :)
Firestorm should definitely be included here. A Wrath effect costing 1 mana that also damages other players and acts as a graveyard enabler at instant speed is seriously insane!
See now I feel bad about having (just) finished college before Legends came out. I also don't buy someone of the same generation from the West Coast not knowing who Melissa Etheridge is. But it definitely made the ad more fun.
Angent of stromgald has been a long time favorite of mine one of the first decks i built was red black and i only had like six swamp in the deck but always managed to cast my black spells
I'm really surprised you left Gamble off the list. People leave it on the cutting room floor a lot, but a one-mana unconditional tutor (albeit with the risk of discarding the card you searched for, which might be an upside in yard-heavy decks) is pretty strong.

I like Martyr of Ashes more in the Bloodfire Dward spot. All the same things apply if you have at least 1 red card in your hand but it can do so much more.
The Zosu punishment line had me dying, lol.
Pyroblast/Red Elemental Blast goes without saying if you're a heavy-blue play group.
Really channeling that Some More News energy there Prof. Nice to see you're... existing, in these times.
The professor is slowly turning into Rudy
"I went with plain!" just killed me
Good list I especially liked the inclusion of Onslaught. I used to run that back in the day forgot that card even existed.
The same is true for Guiltfeeder.
Goblin Chirurgeon is great, I have that in my Goblin Tribal EDH deck. All so, I never thought about comprehension rule 702.2E...very helpful.
Another great 1 mana red card is anything but unknown, but it's still underrated in commander: Lightning Bolt! It removes creatures, it can finish off a player that was too greedy with using their life as a resource, and it can deal with planeswalkers!
Prof with the timely and relevant madonna references.
Shattering Spree is a beauty! Great recommendation!
The Raycon plugs are the best. It reminds me of the advert with Tim and Eric with Zach Galiafanikis with Absolut Vodka.
Hey professor I gotta ask when are we gonna get a new pauper video? Like a top 5 pauper for Ikoria?
I love these ads so much
What a masterpiece of an intro! Love it!
I went with plain!
Lol the Professor cracks me up
I don't think sponsored content has ever put me to tears from laughing before
As the president of Kaiba Corporation I love the color red.
The intro feels like a Half in the Bag intro
The only thing I got out of this is that now I need to build a Rith saproling deck. I had never seen that card before.
Scalding Salamander + Blade of Selves + Bow of Nylea makes for a neat day.
Has someone checked in on the Professor lately? I think the quarantine's getting to him
I don't normally listen to a 3 minute commercial unless it is the super hip Professor.
I'm really surprised you left Gamble off the list. People leave it on the cutting room floor a lot, but a one-mana unconditional tutor (albeit with the risk of discarding the card you searched for, which might be an upside in yard-heavy decks) is pretty strong.
I now feel like I have to buy those earplugs in solidarity with the manufacturers for having chosen the prof as a promoter
