I like how this podcast is spanning more than just one avenue or format and that the Prof is pulling guests from all aspects of the game. I'm not big on watching Arena game play but this dude seems really chill and I'm really tempted to check out his streams.
His streams are awesome. Also, as far as the podcast, it was always intended to be an umbrella podcast that could talk about anything in Magic, but the huge attention on Commander right now simply made it so that 9/10 guests just wanted to talk Commander. Chuckle. TRYING to get non-Commander topics up.
@@TolarianCommunityCollege I definitely thought at first it was going to be a commander-centric podcast but even as a mostly commander player I'm glad it is not. We see in this podcast that there is much overlap between the formats and many of the lessons we can learn about cards can span those different formats. That and it's easy to get tunnel vision in the community of your format and this podcast can serve as a bridging point to open people up to the other formats and their communities that are out there. At least that is proving true for myself. Thanks for the reply!
By all evaluations, I'd say this podcast is amazing! It has good tempo, immediate value, and works with any deck across formats. Definitely a playable podcast!
Yes, John is known for his brews. Yes, he is known for being ranked #1 on Arena, not once, but twice. But what he is really known for is being from the same city as me, St. Louis!
I thought i was just going to listen while playing smash bros( which is what i usually do with podcasts) but i just want to sit down and watch, read, and listen to all of the information being given because this is amazing advice
Great video, brought up a bunch of things I never fully considered. One of the things you guys touched on in the video when mentioning Assassins Trophy and such can be summarised in the word "Context" which I feel is the most significant factor in a cards power. The standard environment and other cards printed in the same set/standard rotation heavily effect the value of a card. My favorite example of this has to be Savage Knuckleblade. The card is bonkers in a vacuum but when you add Siege Rhino to the equation the card gets significantly worse.
how to evaluate cards in standard. 1) is it blue or green? 2) is it a mythic rare? If yes, its good. If no, its unplayable. Just kidding of course, but seriously, I feel like there is very little deck diversity in standard right now and Bant ramp and temur rec is so hard to play against.
You could also just be a Timmy and throw in the biggest, dumbest creatures possible into an edh deck, make sure to only use 28 lands (in a 5-color deck, of course) with no ramp or rocks, and then scream and toss the table over when you lose. That’s how I play
I enjoyed this especially since the professor is not a Spiky player and John knows the game competitively in and out but both are passionate about the game. It’s a good dynamic.
I feel like people don't discuss the actual playing of the game enough and I like how John showed off how certain cards have really excellent play patterns like Radha, which is actually stronger than straight up card advantage in a lot of situations. I had been thinking something similar about my own deck but had not been able to put it into words.
I really love the direction the podcast is going. Lots of great guests and most importantly a variety of topics and formats being discussed. Keep it up!
This Is Literally The Best Information Video, Most Useful and Helpful Knowledge for me In my Opinion! Professor, this is your Masterpiece, Best Video of all time.
Prof, it seems you are seeking out more diverse voices in MTG. Thank you so much for this! My own MTG circle includes a variety of ages, cultures, and lived experiences, and I suspect this is true for lots of playgroups. I love that you are using your platform to show a bigger picture of our community as a whole, and there is a seat at the table for everyone.
Glad to see the heroic intervention love, I've been playing it in modern sideboards and doing the exact "profitable block and backswing" play for a long while

I am constantly trying to evaluate my cards and seeing which card has the best fit where. Most recently in my first dive into Cedh. Thanks for the video, Prof! And thanks for all the awesome input John!
Very thought-provoking video. Even if I don’t really play standard, I was happy to hear Radha getting some love. I think she’s a really cool card, and I’m actually putting together a commander build with her soon.
I think something that is hard to notice at first with hype is why people are hyped. For example: new Teferi isn’t that strong, but in multiplayer formats, where you can plus him on each opponents turn? That’s pretty good.
I don't know about Rin and Seri. I built them for commander and they do work. Cards like doubling season, cat/dog lords and triumph of the hordes. I know the deck is weak to removal but every deck has to have weaknesses. I built them because I love my pets, but Rin and Seri are decent in casual commander imo.
Wow prof. When you posted about representation on your channel, I immediately thought that you were one of the few people i could trust to actually take action and fix your mistakes; however, I didnt think you'd be hustling to do it as much as you have as quickly as you have. Good on you for keeping your word, and I know you'll keep it going too. The way you foster your network and community are admirable, and I am confident you'll keep working to make it even better.
Well, I quite loved this guest. He knew what he was talking about and gave is an awesome insight of current standard, with the risky move of predicting the power of cards that people aren't using. Plus, the fact that he got #1 on Constructed Arena without playing the meta or net decking is enough to earn my respect. The lady on the last video talk was very bland, I didn't like the video at all. I don't know if it's a forced guest as well, but I also didn't like the trans guest.

I like his mindset. Has anyone noticed how messed up Ayula's Influence is with Path to Discovery, with a Ayula out? I made a 40 forest deck using these cards, plus some other spells. It gets pricey if you add Neyith, but she helps speed it up so much. Really, she's not needed, but it's still fun. Ayula's Influence + 1-2x Path of Discovery on board. Try it out
What's y'alls thoughts on: Sigil of the empty throne on battlefield(4/4angel everytime you cast an enchantment) , Hero of iroas(reduce aura cost by 1colorless, heroic+1+1) and/or Battlewise hoplite heroic +1+1ctr scry 1. Cast epharas enlightenment(give enchanted creature +1/+1 and flying. May return to hand whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control) on one of the two creatures.
I may have a question about an interaction. If I have doubling season(If an effect would create one or more tokens under your control, it creates twice that many of those tokens instead.), Anointed Procession(If an effect would create one or more tokens under your control, it creates twice that many of those tokens instead.), parallel lives (If an effect would put one or more tokens onto the battlefield under your control, it puts twice that many of those tokens onto the battlefield instead.), Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation (If one or more creature tokens would be created under your control, three times that many of those tokens are created instead.) and Nahiri, the Lithomancer on the field. If I tick up nahiri up by 2 creating a 1/1 kor solder would it create 9 or 24 with the other ability? Because I have one side saying 7 and another saying 24.
I'm not saying it's a good card, but that's a little bit of a shallow evaluation on brash taunter there, a turn after cast against lovestruck it represents 5, 10, 15, or even 20 dmg to the dome over the course of two block / activation cycles. The implication itself is what is dangerous about 5 mana, It's a prison-type control card that punishes over-extension without evasion.

It all depends on how it’s being used. I like it in the right deck, and I am thinking of brewing a copy spells deck. But I wouldn’t put it certain decks, example being if in red and blue, thousand year storm is probably better.
