Hi Tom! Yes, you have to purchase a permit from South African National Parks (SANParks) on their website, or through resellers (who add some admin fees). It is extremely popular, so you often have to book a year in advance. Thanks for reminding me to add SANParks website to the video description! Here it is as well: www.sanparks.org/
@@tombrown6628 in reality South Africa has tons of open spaces and wildlife areas, but most of the human population is centered around a few areas like Johannesburg, Cape Town, etc. I think this is what makes it look crowded (because in those cities, it is). In between the big population hubs you get massive areas with very few people or buildings.
I'm going next month, can't wait!!!! It will be my 1st 5 day!
I hope you had an epic time out there! Sorry for only responding to your comment now!
Thanks for the Great Video. I'm doing the Otter later this year. Your videos really help to know what to expect.
Have fun! I'm so glad that you found the video helpful 😀
Can't believe I'm going too!! Whoop-whoop! Thank you Ruth!!!
Whoop whoop! It's going to be a party!
Nice video Ruth. You have a wonderful afternoon 👍
Thank you! You too!
Can't wait to go again. Went about 5 years ago.
Nice! I can't wait to go again too!
When did you do it and how much did your pack weigh?
We are doing it 15-19 May
We hiked The Otter Trail in July 2022. I think my pack weighed around 12kg.
Do you have to purchase a permit to hike? Does the trail have a website ?

Quite an impressive variety of parks and wildlife areas. I often get the impression SA is crowded with little or no room for parks and wildlife.
