I've had the Sangean PR-D5 for years. I bought one when they first came out and it's been on almost non-stop since. It's AM reception is legendary and will pick up stations all over. I bought it because we go camping alot and wanted to pick up stations, and was I surprised by how well it does. It usually sits on top of my refridgerator at home, and has really been on for years. AWESOME RADIO!!! Your review is very accurate and well done!

Thanks Dr. Mike. This was helpful to sort out what I to buy to replace my beloved Tivoli iSongBook, which I was using with a 2nd attachable speaker. My unit just bit the dust after some six years of dutiful service, travel, beach use and bedside duty. FWIW, I never found much use for the iSongBook's iPod docking feature, but really liked the sound quality, remote control and especially fell for the built-in rechargeable battery feature -- oddly rare in radio offerings -- which made it a cinch to move the unit from bedroom, to bathroom, to kitchen, as I move about my apartment. Alas, this portability contributed to the iSongBook's demise, as I seemed to have dropped it one to many times. Finding a comparable replacement has been difficult. I ended up buying the Sangean PR-D15, the successor to the D5, which was slightly upgraded to include a handle and in a matte finish. Amazon has them, via Prime, for ~$83 in January 2014.

Thanks for making this review! Very organized. Well presented. I purchased the Sangean. It was cheaper. It also has the RDS feature for FM. This helps when you're unable to hear an FM station long enough for an identification (call letters) if it's just skipping in for a brief moment.
I will check out some of your other posts on different radios. Thanks Mike!

I didn't know about the stereo/mono option - added bonus. I'm a ham, and into long distance listening.

Very nicely done! I have ordered the Sangean from Amazon because I was looking for a good AM receiver to pick up baseball games, and the price was quite reasonable. Thank you for your review!

I missed this one, tivoli songbook. I have the advent 300 receiver. I am currently listening to the Yamaha Tsx b72 and A Little Touch of Schmillson in the Night. The Tsx 140 I also have beats the Bose Wave 2 with an iPad classic 160 source. I have 2 Tivoli Ones and 2 Tivoli 2 radios And a tivoli cd player that I believe the laser has gone perklunk. Kross was a very smart man. Thanks for your reviews, they're very good.

Hey people don't seem to give any credit to the a.m. on the songbook has really nice a.m. The f.m. i think also has the edge over the PR D5 .But as far as sound I think the songbook is pretty bad for sound I can't speak for headphones, having the radio for 10 yrs or so you think I would have listened more to the headphones.as far as sound I believe the PRD5 has really nice balance sound and as far as mono for distant stations, I like it fading in stereo cause it helps me hear around the wave I like that better.but when all is said and done 200 too much for the songbook,my kaito 1103 will out perform it on F.M. and its only 80 dollars also comes with shortwave with sideband!

I like the rds feature and I also own the Sangean cl-100 am/fm NOAA all hazzards weather alert radio with rdbs for fm stations and a great radio I picked up a rock station in Windsor Ontario weak signal but I even had the rdbs tell me The Rock on the display of the weather radio and when watches warnings or advisories activate the alert the radio mutes and alert goes off and the led lights up for the alert and receive an audio alert of the bulletin issued and then the eom signal then returns to

What the RDS is good for? Let's say your bouncing in a station from 1000 miles away and it's coming in clear you get the call letters and look it up radio locator and find out where it is.however if the station is not coming in too good the RDS may not be able to lock on to it and you won't get any reading.

Why is the Songbook impossible to find in the used market? I have one that needs to be repaired. Can you help me find someone to fix mine?

They don't repair things anymore, there aren't any repairimen. You either do it yourself or throw it in the garbage
