This might sound a little lame, but this video actually made me a little emotional. I played this game as a kid (was born in the late 90s) and always dabbled in it here and there. Then, in 2016 I left school and got into it in a much larger way and started going to events. This was a period when it was still branded as the Hobbit, and things were hard to get hold of, the rules situation was disjointed and odd, and third parties were filling in the gaps. We thought it was surely dying. But James, Jamie, Damian and Tom provided us with so much fun content and a community to be proud of, encouraging us to support the Hobbit hobby! I used to watch everything, including livestreams. During one of these, James was very kind and supportive towards me as I was sitting in my car, anxiously waiting for a job interview at my FLGS. I got the job, and never forgot that moment. James probably doesn’t remember, and it was a small moment in his life, but it was massive to me. I remember being so happy for him from afar when he had his daughter, and I’m grateful for the time he invested in the community. Without those guys, I don’t think the game would exist today. I feel extremely nostalgic for that period, when I was 18/19, we were trawling eBay for OOP models, playing interesting events, making do and converting proxies and writing community rules. I remember the One Ring forums and all the brilliant stuff on there. Hearing James’ voice just brought it all back to me. I didn’t realise how much that period meant to me until now.

Man, what a lovely comment and thank you so much for sharing! Those guys certainly did a lot for the community and I certainly know I wouldn’t be around doing this today if it wasn’t for James in particular. My first TH-cam appearances were with him over on HGG 😊
I think a lot of people forget about the dark days of the hobby when there was little hope that the game would continue to be supported, and that it’s only due to the dedication of a few people that the game is still around today.

I'm a little speechless but want to acknowledge and thank you for taking the time to write this out. Made me a little emotional and probably in the same sentiment as what you're describing for you during that period, reading this gave me a real moment too. So, thank you for giving me that.
And for taking me back mentally to that time too, the innocence of it all and what if felt like. I'm grateful for all the support and encouragement we received, the adventures we had together and seemingly, the result that came from all the efforts. But more importantly, the people we connected with and the friends we made.
It's why I'm keen to, without the pressure, return to being involved in producing content here and there as an extension of that hobby, because I could do with a little bit of that good feeling, the feeling you just gave me reading your comment. Thanks man, keep in touch ❤

So, more leaning into tournament play (which… with all the best will in the world, is the minority of players) at the expense of making a fun game to play at home with your friends? It’s like the rules clarifying and I actually like the limiting of things like throwing spears (even as a Rohan player). But it seems like it’s pandering to a certain crowd and that crowd already have models bought… could that be why the stat lines for new and completely made up characters from a cartoon get better stat lines than canon models? To push tournament lists towards the new and not really in universe models?
I’m happy for anyone that gets excited for the new stuff… it just doesn’t really seem like Tolkien universe stuff. The models are good- the gw stuff always is. But really, the new Rohan stuff is like the old Rohan stuff. The new hill tribe stuff may as well be slaves to darkness. It’s all a bit non middle earth.

I'll obviously have to wait until I play some games but so far I am very excited to try out the rules changes. Toning down on magic (he says, as someone who likes to use a lot of magic) but making it more consistent with the Channeling change is awesome. Getting rid of some of the bloat but expanding the profiles to include fluffier rules sounds really nice to me as well. Massive fan of the unit type differentiation as well, it's happened to me so often that an opponent charges my bat swarm with cavalry and wins the fight and they ask "wait, so is it knocked down as well?". It never really made sense and it's a nice change, as well as them not being able to just beeline an objective, dig them up and fly off without your opponent being able to do anything.
The design team has really gone further than I expected them to, but my initial feeling is that rules wise they've nailed it.

Overall it seems like the rules tweaks are solid improvements. A few feel like dumbing things down (like the change to in the ways), but others are huge ballancing quality of life (more consistent magic with Channeling and only D3 strike keeping the really high Fight heros feeling dangerous).
However, I am really annoyed with a lot of things I've seen leaked about army building. In particular, culling horses from a bunch of big heroes (Gil Gallad and Elendil) and completely negating several armies (Corsairs feels almost pointless, and Lothlorian has been gutted).
The changes to things like Aragorn, Gandalf the White, and Fangorn as an entire list seems awesome.
I'm just really skeptical about what the end result is going to be for what armies are on the table. A lot is riding on the Armies of Middle Earth book to fill in the gaps from Armies of LotR/Hobbit....

  • @princedetenebres
    @princedetenebres วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Two corrections:
None of the unnamed Captains have strike - this is mentioned multiple times, but I don't think a single one across any faction has this heroic action; so if that's the reason for liking the change...
Don't get me wrong, I like it, but that doesn't change that only the king level heroes in *some* factions have strike (khand, harad, Mahud, gondor) but not others (Dwarf), and of all the generic captain/chieftain level heroes, none of them can call strike.
    Second:
Banners have always in this edition had to be standing to confer the benefit; even in the initial rulebook for the edition from 2018 it states this clearly and unambiguously:
"models cannot benefit from the effects of the banner while the bearer is prone." p89, it's the 2nd paragraph.

    • @BenjisHobbies

We meant that as generic ‘2/3 might’ type captains (think Gorbag, Gamling, Hama etc), not unnamed captains.

@@BenjisHobbies That's fair enough, forgive my confusion since you guys said unnamed captains several times to my recollection.
Sorry if I'm a little amused that even 2 of those 3 don't have strike either though :)
Don't get me wrong, I like that change unlike most of the others -- I'd love to hear a good explanation for why the matched play scenarios now are down to 6 and half of them have the asinine auto VP for your opponents' banners if you don't have one yourself -- especially when this is coupled with GW taking some banners away (Thror for instance).

That said, I have a hard time taking any of your opinions to heart because they aren’t counterbalanced with anything critical of the new edition, and there is plenty to be critical of. @@ArdaconInternationalMedia I did enjoy the video, but do you not think things like the +1 armour rule for light armour against shooting attacks a little strange? i mention this one because at one point in the video you mention that historical gamers etc say about realism of things that would happen (so made changes to take some stuff into account there) which I like thats really cool, but then a rule like that really isnt realistic, it would have made far more sense to have had it +1 in combat only as arrows and bolts would always rip through light armour easily. Also thanks for responding, I only say about the negatives because when people get a chance to review something early by GW its nice to also see what potential pitfalls there may be (as every game has them, nothing is perfect)

Bes r summary i have seen. Thank you. Changes to the rules look great.. army lists will be a shambles for a while.

Thanks so much! I think the army lists will be very much like they were at the beginning of the last edition, but as we get more and more supplements more interesting army lists will be added 😊

Sounds to me all the flavour has gone in the newer edition.
Im a casual player not a tournament player, its same for all GW systems they are all getting bland to suit the competitive scene.
