Here my my analysis on Riku's story for people who only watch the compilations
The two major themes in Riku's story are Power and Faith. Now let's talk about the faith theme first. When I say faith I don't mean religious faith but more so the general idea of faith. Throughout the story of Re:CoM Riku's faith in himself is constantly tested with both Ansem and the Organization trying to tempt Riku into giving into the darkness again. From Ansem offering Riku power in exchange for becoming one with him again to The Organization trying to torment Riku into submission. And as The mind games continue Riku's faith in himself grows shaker and shaker until he is forced to witness his greatest sin. While in the memory world version of Destiny Island Riku is faced with his guilt for sinking his home into darkness in order to satisfy his own selfish ambitions and Zexion uses this guilt to break Riku by taking the shape of the one Riku seeks forgiveness and acknowledgement from the most, Sora. Riku nearly fades away into the light as his faith shatters but thanks to Namine's words Riku is able to pick up the pieces and continue believing in himself and seeing past Zexion's illusions. By facing doubt head on, Riku's faith becomes unbreakable. It is also important to note that Riku had to Defeat Zexion in order to restore his faith in himself because Zexion represents the greatest enemy of faith, Doubt. Zexion is a master of Illusions, one who fights others through lies and deception. Using them to make up for his lack of any real strength, both physically and internally. But most importantly his illusions are used to fill his opponents with doubt in order to make them as weak as him. For Zexion is not a true warrior but rather a coward that makes his enemies lose faith in themselves so he can delude himself into thinking he is a powerful man. Riku's strory is not just about faith in oneself but faith in others. Throughout the Story Riku receives aid from Mickey, who for most of the game can't physically be there with Riku and is simply a voice. In order to survive in this hellish castle of isolation Riku must put his faith in someone he can't see. Of course this faith is rewarded when Mickey finally arrives in Castle Obvilion.
Now let's talk about the Power theme. Power is a recurring motif of Riku's character. In KH1 he abandoned his friends and ideals to obtain power which in the end cost him not only his body but his very sense of self and it was only when he choose to protect his friends again that he regained his body and identity. In Re:CoM Riku must come to greater understanding of what it means to have power if he wishes to obtain redemption. Throughout Re:CoM Riku relies on the power of Darkness to fight but at the same time he fears this power. He's terrified of being consumed by the darkness, that once again he will become a slave to the power. But it is this fear of his power that is what truly endangers Riku within the walls of castle Oblivion. Because Riku is afraid of his powers he is defeated by Lexaeus who is the very embodiment of raw physical strength, a man with complete dominance over power. And because Riku's fears lead to his defeat Ansem is able to take control of body again, because those that fear their powers are just as likely to be consumed by it as those that indulge in said power. Of course though Riku needs to do far more than just stop fearing his powers to control it. After all if that's all it took then Replica Riku would not of meet his end. Replica Riku is a reflection of Riku's past and as such he is doomed to repeat Riku Mistakes. Replica Riku is despite to prove himself different from the original Riku and So he lusts for power in hopes that it will make him unique. But in doing So he is just copying The actions of KH1 Riku and failing to see that he already had something that made him special, that the real Riku never had to begin with, His feelings for Namine. Because Replica Riku sought an identity through power instead of embracing the one bond he had, he failed to become his own person and faded away into the darkness.
Now then how exactly does Riku come to a better understanding of what it means to have Power? Well that ties right back to the Faith theme. Riku learns that he needs to have resolve in both himself and his ideals. That he must have faith in himself and the path he walks to control his power so that it does not control him. Which is why he chooses to face Ansem alone and keep his memories of his mistakes because now he believes he can defeat his demons, Now he truly understands that strength is meant to protect what matters. Riku entered Castle Oblivion Scared of both his powers and himself but when he leaves the castle he's ready to walk the road to dawn with a confident smile.

Here my my analysis on Sora's story for people who only watch the compilations
The two main themes of Sora's story in Re:CoM are memories and fairy tales. The memory theme is fairly obvious, it’s in the title after all but what the game is trying to say with the theme is less obvious. If the Heart is what shapes a Body in KH then it's memories that Shape a heart. We see this with Soras and how much he changes after Namine alters his memories with him becoming more aggressive and neglecting his relationships to focus on saving Namine. Replica Riku also shows this with how his entire personality and motives are shaped by the false memories Namine gave him. However while memories shape a heart they can not truly define it. Sora's core remains the same even after his memories are altered. Shown best when he chooses to save Namine even after finding out his memories of her are fake because Sora is the type of person who will always help someone in need no matter what. The Fairy Tale theme is something you probably won't realize on a first playthrough but once you do you will never be able to think about Sora's Story in Re:CoM without it. Sora's story in Re:CoM is Nomura and Daisuke Watanabe’s take on the classic fairy tale of Prince Charming rescuing the Princess from the Tower. Sora is prince charming, Namine is the princess, and Castle Oblivion is the Tower. At first the story seems like it's playing this Fairy Tale straight with how The members of Organization XIII all fit a classic fairytale villain. Axel is the mischievous jester both in design, jovial personality, and his ability to play both sides for his own gain. Larxene is the haughty villainess tormenting Namine for her own amusement and mocking the heroes at every turn, Vexen is the mad Scientist/Wizard using magic to create homunculus in the form of the replicas, and then there is Marxluxia who is the Grim Reaper, the ultimate villain of every fairy tale, casting a shadow of death on all those reside in Castle Oblivion ready to strike the killing blow at any moment. Even Replica Riku fits this theme with him being the rival prince that fights the hero for the princess's affection. But then Nomura and Watanabe pull the rug out from under us by revealing that Namine is not at all a princess but rather a witch, the dark counterpart of a princess. Everything from the moment Sora set foot in Castle Oblivion has been a lie scripted by Marluxia and told through Namine to manipulate Sora into becoming a puppet. Sora is no Prince charming, he's just Pinnochio falling for the tricks of selfish adults in a desperate attempt to be a real boy. (Which is thematically why Jiminy has been Sora’s eternal companion throughout the game). And then Nomura and Watanabe pull the rug out from us all over again by showing us that even if Namine is a witch she is still someone worth saving. Namine is neither evil nor wicked; she's just a scared and lonely girl looking for friendship. And that is why Despite knowing everything was a lie Sora still saves Namine because his feelings are real. It doesn't matter if you're a princess or a witch, nobody should be alone forever and everyone deserves to be rescued. Now then let's talk about how these two themes work together to tell the final message of Sora's story. The final message is that our memories are in the end stories just like a fairy Tale. They are stories that shape our hearts and help make us into the people we are today. And just like stories it doesn't matter if our memories are real or fake because our feelings behind them are real. Sora chose to save Namine even if all his memories of her were fake because the feelings he had for her were real even if they were meant for someone else.

Memories are the stories of the Hearts. They are chains of our past that bind us both in protecting and in torment, for the past is never ideal nor should it be. And that Truth is shared between Sora and Riku's journeys throughout Castle Oblivion. In both their stories Sora and Riku are given the choice between their real memories and an ideal version of their memories.
Sora can either have his original memories of Kairi or his Fairy tale Memories of Namine. He can return to his original life where he must continue to walk down the difficult road to reunion and endure the pain of separation or he can remain in Castle Oblivion and continue to live out the fantasy of being Prince Charming. If he stays all his problems will disappear, he can forget all about the endless strife between Light and darkness, the inevitability of saying goodbye to Donald and Goofy, the burden of saving others, and the pain of losing Kairi and Riku. And it's exactly because of that Sora Chooses to regain his old memories. The Conflict between Light and Darkness can never and should never be ignored for it is a conflict of the heart and to ignore it is to leave the heart to rot. The heart will only know peace when one is willing to confront this internal conflict that is born in our hearts. The Trinity Trio’s bond is by its very nature something that must end and that is exactly why it holds so much value. Sora Donald Goofy knows they won't be together forever so they embrace every moment they spend together, inheriting each other’s ideals and etching them into their very hearts so they will forever be connected. If Sora were to reject his inevitable goodbyes with Donald and Goofy then he would betray his very bonds with them. It is not a burden to save others but rather a gift that has not only made Sora into the hero he is now but has helped form every single one of Sora’s bonds. It is an inseparable part of Sora that makes him who he is. Most importantly however it is the very reason Sora was able to form a real connection with Namine beyond his false memories. Lastly, Sora could never abandon the pain of saying Goodbye to Kairi and Riku because the Pain is what makes a bond real. Everything ends, including the time we spend with our loved ones, to ignore that fact is to strip the connection of any value and reduce it to something shallow and fake. For Sora to be a true friend he must hold on to the pain he felt at the end of KH1 and embrace it forever more for only then will he be able to see them again. It would be a mistake however to think Sora chooses his old memories just for his own sake because he’s also doing this for Namine’s sake. Namine could never truly be happy remaining in Castle Oblivion with Sora. She would remain trapped by her guilt as she would endlessly bear witness to the cruel art she was forced to make by the Lord of the Castle in the form of the false memories she made for Sora. The only way Sora can actually free Namine and grant her true happiness is to let go of his ideal memories of her so that they can someday form a real genuine connection.
Riku is given a similar choice where Namine can free him of all the darkness in his heart by erasing his memories of Ansem. In exchange for losing the memories of his past sins Riku can once again become the ideal “Chosen One”. But Riku refuses the offer because his old self, his “ideal” self, was never real in the first place. It was just a lie Riku told himself and others to hide his insecurities. A False persona that kept him an immature brat. That Riku was never fit to protect Sora and Kairi. So Riku turns down Namine's offer and instead chooses to face his demons in the form of Ansem so that he may become a true protector. By Accepting his mistakes instead of forgetting them he can truly Grow into a Man. For if Riku were to reject his own darkness in order to escape into his delusions then he would be no better than Ansem who rejected the Light in order to retreat into his own cynicism. Riku will carry the weight of his sins in his heart forever more so that he can walk down the Road to Dawn not as an arrogant Prince of Darkness but as a Knight in Shining Black Armor.
