I forgot to mention this in the video but it is very important to note - many of the bodies of the victims were found in the elevators. If you're on a cruise ship and find yourself in an emergency situation, STAY OUT OF THE ELEVATORS! When the power goes out, you will be trapped. Sometimes, you're already in the elevator when the emergency happens and that is out of your control. But, if you have the choice of the stairs or the elevator in the event of a sinking, choose the stairs!

I think the addition of escape hatches in all ship elevators would be a good idea, an electromagnet could be used to keep it locked whenever the elevator motors are powered, but automatically unlock when power is lost. It should be very easy to open when unlocked but impossible to close without a tool, and an open hatch should prevent power from going to the motors. That way if people climb out during a relatively minor incident and then power is restored, the elevators can’t start moving again and injure them.

Yeah, the movie about the Lusitania’s does a great job showing why you never use elevators on a ship when it’s sinking! The Lusitania sank so fast that many people never even made it to the exits due to getting lost in the darkness and trapped in the elevators thanks to her electricity failure and those elevator scenes are very anxiety-inducing!

It’s a shame Francesco Schettino never learned much about the Titanic sinking before becoming a captain. That disaster teaches so much that all captains should know. Titanic Captain Edward John Smith did make some pretty big mistakes that led to the Titanic sinking, but he didn’t just jump into a lifeboat and choose to ignore everyone still on board the ship like Francesco Schettino did. He worked very hard to help as many people as he could safely evacuate the sinking ship and safely lower them in their lifeboats so they could wait for help to arrive and went down with the ship once he felt he had done all he could do. Also, Carpathia Captain Arthur Henry Rostron knew that just because he wasn’t on the Titanic didn’t mean all of those endangered people on board that sinking ship weren’t his responsibility. He quickly sprang into action upon being awakened and informed about the Titanic sinking by his radio operator who came bursting into his cabin unannounced and worked extremely hard to make the Carpathia go faster than she was built to go to reach the Titanic as quickly as possible in order to save as many people as possible from that terrible disaster. All of that is really the opposite of Costa Concordia Captain Francesco Schettino who ridiculously thought that if he just left the ship, those still on board would no longer be his responsibility.

Fun Fact: Francesca Rettondini (the songstress from Ghost Ship, aptly named Francesca) was on the Costa Condordia when it capsized.

Thanks for another great sea story! As a lifelong ship lover, I must commend you both for your calm and levelheaded approach and presentation. You guys managed, once again, to “navigate “ the narrow channel between cutting corners and giving dry, irrelevant details. You are natural born storytellers, and thank you and God bless for sharing this gift with this creaky old, arthritic insomniac. Your sea stories help pass the time when back pain and the cares of this world keep this old guy awake during the wee hours. (BTW, if your little guy is into ships I cannot recommend a better, more fun book than The Story of Ships, by Frank O. Braynard. This is quite outdated, but the text is very clear and the book is filled with wonderful illustrations by French watercolorist Fouille. It was still available online last time I checked, maybe Amazon or Thriftbooks.). And thanks again for all the hard work you put into this fine channel!

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I'm so glad we can be a part of your life and can help you in this way! We will never stop telling ships' stories until we run out of ships! 😂 Cheers! I'll have to look into that book for our little one, thank you so much!

Eleanor, do you work at a library? You cover a story like a professional researcher. Loved the background on the company and ship. The deck names was interesting. I haven't sailed Costa yet. Excellent.

I don't, actually. But I did work in a library when I went to college, so I learned a lot from that time of my life! Thank you very much! I really appreciated the deck names, I thought it was awesome!

@ I recently watched a detailed video about the removal of the wreck and the project manager running the operation. What they had to do was incredible. I have no words to describe what I think of the captain who caused the disaster. Have a good day.

Could you do a video on the tsms Lakonia. A passenger liner which caught fire and sank in the 60s?

if the captain had been more responsible he would not only still have a life but the ship would still be alive.

This tragedy ought to serve as a cautionary tale about not only the dangers of pride and hubris, but also the dangers of hiring people clearly not fit to be a ship captain.

Honestly wouldn't call the Concordia beautiful. It looked like all other modern floating apartment block cruise ships.

Your opinion is definitely valid! I prefer the looks of older ocean liners, but I did appreciate the sleek look of Costa Concordia.
