Elinor, here! Just back into cell service but not home just yet! Thank you for all the love in the comments section! Derek has been injured for a few days now and had to have tendon surgery, so he's currently resting. Thank you guys for your love and support!! ❤
I spent 23 years at sea in the Merchant Marine. 22 of those years on navy auxiliary oceanographic research ships. We have worked in the same waters she disappeared. The Agulhas current often flows against the prevailing winds on the east coast of South Africa. This can cause steep and sometimes freak waves. The charts warn of this. I have spent some very rough times in these waters. Ship's have been known to break apart in these seas.
Thanks for covering this one. I first read about her in a book on ships lost at sea back when I was in fifth grade. This brings back memories such memories of a time when books got me interested in history.
This is the 3rd time I've heard the Firth of Clyde today. Psych. Nobody drops fact bombs like you my lady... It's a body of water everyone. Excellent Job E... Hope your trip went well..
Awesome vid, Elinka! I know LOOKS don't mean a thing, but the Waratah didn't look topheavy (like the Eastland), so it's odd. Very attractive vessel, though. Wonder if we'll ever find her resting place...
A terrifying mystery. Later scientific examination showed that that area off of South Africa is a breeding ground for rogue waves, and I can only imagine what hideous fate she met in those shark-infested waters.
If she lost power in those seas, her lifespan could be measured in possibly hours. And it's practically impossible to launch a traditional style open lifeboat in anything but stable seas, let alone a horrible storm in that stretch of water.
Turning turtle and then exploding her boilers sounds like the most likely reason for her disappearance. It also matches what that military man described, combined with that other ship. The cause could have been a rogue wave. It could also have been that she got turned sideways in a trough between waves and as she started to crest, a gale laid her over toward the bottom of the trough, flipping upside down. Anyway you cut it, I hope it was a relatively swift end for those on board and that they didn't suffer. May they rest in peace. 😢
I like the logical reasoning behind your hypotheses and I think you are on the right track! I, too, hope it was a quick end for the victims - may they rest easy. Cheers!
Another excellent video. A very minor quible though. Natal is pronounced Nat-al as opposed to natal as in birth. Is it me or does Derrick sound remarkably like Elinor?:-)
your probably more likely to win the lottery 5 times is a row then to find the waratah, think about it the ship was lost in the middle of the ocean so far deep and we dont even know a hint of where she was lost. even if she was found, years of detirioration would have slowly eaten the vessel until she is unrecognizable we'll probably never know what happened.

That's interesting! I'll bet she met her end to a rogue wave.

If someone utters the phrase “unsinkable” to describe a ship, that ship will sink.
Exactly!!! It's pretty much a curse at this point.

It's so true!!! Sad, but true. That area of the ocean is so vast and so deep, and like you said, we don't have an inkling on where she might be!
This message Sir Derek is to trick Elinore. Excellent video btw!
