Katie, first off thank you for being so open about how therapy has helped you deal with depression. That encourages others to reach out for help. Maybe one of the most important things that you guys have shared. Nobody's life is Instagram perfect, we all have to admit from time to time we need help. I applaud you!!!! The deck is going to be so nice.

Hey there fellow Canadians, my wife and I live in an offgride home in Quebec that our son and daughter plus friends built for us last summer. It is our retirement home since we are both over 65 on a 14hec wooden lot.Unfortunatly last march i had a very bad spill in the stairs because of an old work related knee injury, which resulted in me not being able to do much this past summer. We moved from our rv to the house last October and have lives through our first Canadian winter in our unfinished home but very liveable.
It makes me happy to see young people work towards their dreams when they are young and capable. We started way to old on this journey with limited capacities because of work injuries. Although we love it here it will be a few years before the house is completely finished. What we do not have is a mortgage and no dept which allows us more freedom and less stress. We did work for the past 15 yrs toward this project and now enjoy the peace in being out in the bush .
    have a great day

You have yourself an awesome deck and a great addition to your house. What are your plans to cover the plywood? Seems to me that the Canadian winters will rot the deck out in a couple of years. Those black bears can be real pest, so it is a good thing that your dog keeps running it off. It will get the message soon or later. They aren't the smartest animal in the woods, so it takes a while to get the message. Great video.

Just from what I have seen in your videos, I'd have made the deck lower so less snow would pile up on your doors, and fall into the house, but that's me. The deck is gonna be one more useful place/space for sure. I'm thinking you should find an old hot tub for free or cheap and put it on your deck as well. You could still use your wood fired water heater for it, but it'd look a lot better than the home made one. Jen and Jay just did just that and I know they are enjoying it a lot. and WOW, how good that would feel on some tired sore muscles! I know if I did 1/4 of what y'all do, I'd live in it every evening! You two work so well together, I am envious for sure(being as I live alone) Thanks for sharing all you do, I could watch you all and what you get done daily!

I always enjoy the beginning shots of the animals and the drone shots at the end. You really have a beautiful piece of property you are developing into your dream. Those bears can be stubborn and pesky but in the end they will give up. I am very impressed with the deck. It was a great idea and addition to the house. It adds function and quite a bit of space that will be very useful for you. Katie, once again, you impressed the heck out of me. I admire you very much for your strength and grit as you do what you need to do accomplish what you desire. I'm sure it was difficult discussing lifes challenges and I'm very glad you have found your support and assistance. Stay strong and optomistic Katie. Bear alarms - whistle, air horn, rattles, for noise. Bear protection: spray, gun, dogs. Bear safety: relocate food and animals.
Small camper colors and furnishings look very 70'sish. Reseal and caulk windows. Repaint interior with brighter colors and replace furniture fabric. Open windows, doors, hatches to vent interior. Place cushions and bedding in the sun. Spray interior with Fabreeze. Add timed air freshner mister. Definitely more accommodating than tents, especially in the cold. Check, spray wash and fix exterior as required.
Niice entertaining areas on the deck.

Great feeling when you can sit on a finished deck with your mate and watch the sunset. Did you ever try marking your territory where you spot the bear? I used to have raccoons come in my cat door till I went out at 3am and marked with pee. Then I sprinkled coffee grounds along the perimeter of my yard. I have heard spreading used kitty litter works too.

I sold the main house in 1977 and bought it back in 1992, then began a major renovation. Your deck plywood reminded me of the main front deck on our house. The previous owner had used plywood under the decking. That plywood had rotted due to water not being able to dry out. It did not last more than 10 years. If you are decided to use plywood, they make a " waterproof " version. Even so, don't expect much of a lifespan.

Congratulations on the purchase of your toaster-style trailer. They can be a fantastic value if you can find them for cheap because they're wood framed and can be worked on with fairly common tools. As you saw, they tend to leak along their windows edges because the style of waterproofing tape they used back in the day turns to goo over time. In addition to the windows, you're also going to want to pull the j-trim along the seams between the sheet metal sides and top. The sealant will also be failing on you there. Check for leaks around the roof vent and door as well. Finally, check for damage around any water or propane lines.
Reskinning the inside with your favourite 1/8" windsor plywood is a fantastic idea. It will look awesome and cost me less than I expected on my toaster. Use the existing woodpanelling as templates for cutting new plywood. I used acrylic caulk and 18 gauge nails to put my panels on so that it'd be serviceable if one ever needs to come back out.
I can't wait to see the finished project. It's gonna be awesome.

Best way to christen the deck is with a nice BBQ. You know the deck is built well when you have all the family dancing on it. Thankfully the wet weather has brought an end to the serious fire hazard for the woods. Open a trailer BnB for the snow sledders this winter to generate Katie's extra cash.

You got a pretty good deal on the camper. It looks in good shape. Short term fixes, replace anything cloth - mattress, cushions, etc. Then wipe everything down with disinfectant. And then the furnace, refrigerator, and good to go. And then in the spring, gut it. The bear found the. Hi Jen feed so now he knows where to find food, will continue to come back. If you want to not take drastic action on the bear, you can try air horns, shotgun blanks. Good luck, just please be careful.

Yes we used to get mold in all of our tent trailers that we used to rent out really bad and all the RV used to get a lot of mold in it but you know all that mold inhibitor if you read every label in them mostly every one of them got bleach and that's all I ever used was bleaching water sometimes half and half that's why my clothes were always bleached but we had to be careful with the tent trailers because of the canvas couldn't use bleach so we're always looking for something that didn't have bleach in it and we view some of those cleaners from Canadian tire and you spray the canvas and next you can know you got bleach splattered marks all over the canvas so yeah they got bleach so you're better off just to use bleach and water for mold I used to call it my second aftershave bleach Best thing in the winter to keep mold out of your R V's are those little units that take the little beads the white beads I forget what it is called or just put it in a nylon stalking and hang it in the trailer and put a bucket below it or leave your windows open a bit as long as the temperature in the RV is the same temperature is outside your RV won't sweat standard cushions up on the edge don't leave them laying down or take them right out

There is nothing wrong with hard work but take a couple of minutes to determine if there is a way to work smarter instead of harder. If you have an old tire around you can put it over the pieces of wood you need to split so your not having to constantly set the wood back up. Try moving the wood to be split in front of the wood shed so you don't have to carry many pieces so far.😊

Katie in love with that trailer. It looks almost identical to Leah & Levi’s (TH-camrs) that they bought to redo. One suggestion is please remove the upholstery on those cushions. You might be very frightened to see the state of the foam inside. Especially if there was moisture. Leah & Levi found they had to throw all of theirs away. Full of mold 😉😣
    The deck looks awesome 👏

Greg, you need to build a porch in front of that wood shed. It’s going to be quite interesting coming and going with a load of wood when that hill in front is muddy and ice/snow covered

I agree with you about the walls. One thing to note being that trailer was built in the 70's. The foam probably contains formaldehyde and almost all of the glue used is really bad for you.

You may have a potential rot issue after 5 to 10 years with the T/G plywood. I've seen it rot pretty quick when covered but still exposed to seasonal moisture. Granted I don't live in Canada, Southern California is a totally different climate

Hey Kate.. I have a couple of Ideas for you to keep the bear away from your animals..
    Put up a electric fence
    (Premier fencing Works awesome)
Around the area you don't want him in. Second thing is to get
    Wireless motion driveway sensors.
I have done this here in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan for bear. coyote, and bobcat.

@ 18:29 the way you are sliding your upper hand to the lower hand on your axe swing is so intuitive to a proper way to get axe head speed to split wood
