      Brand new boats have lots of problems. I have had three all from different builders. Finally realized it’s a bad idea and my current boat was three years with one very careful German owner. I looked like new but had every extra and all the problems worked out!

      Deserving and affording are two wildly different things…then there’s the waiting, that’s a 2+ year wait for a new spec build, at $3 million and up by the time it’s sailing on to your first port. 😬
      They also might not like the boats available, and that’s a huge thing.

    Thanks Nick and Megan!
    The Balance looks like the best combination of performance, ergonomics, style, and practicality. Agree about the sharp edges.
    All new boats are costly due to high labor costs due to the way they're made.

    I checked out the C Cat 37 at le Grand Pavois on Wednesday and i was truly impressed. It got on top of my wishlist. The boat on display had already 10,000 miles on her with two Atlantic crossings. She looked brand new. He owner was also the sales rep and we had a nice hour chatting about his boat. 10 knots on average and 17 knots easily. Very roomy and fast for a rather small unit.
    I had also a good look at the Neel 52 and 43. The 52 is like a house on the water. The master cabin is just fatastic. The 43 looks pretty decent.

    I like the cover of the HH, and I understand the concern about having to lean out to see the sails, but my sister has gone about three rounds with skin cancer, and I would opt for more coverage and having to lean out to peek at the sails. I guess because of all the solar they couldn't put a peephole up to the main sail? After everything you two have been through, I think a new boat would be perfect. Although, you would have to wait for it, but least you would know it was going to happen, and not all the letdowns! Sheesh!

      Nikki and Jason Wynn with some impressive cooperation from Cat maker HH went the extra mile and documented everything for two years via video factory walk arounds and interviews regarding the HH people, facilities and equipment involved in the two year build process of their HH44OC (hull #3) Catamaran. Prior to the Feb 2024 start of the lengthly turn over process.Nikki and Jason when over that beautiful boat with a fine tooth comb.and video cameras. Apparent result. The HH artisans turned hull #3 into a piece of art. As to being able to get a look at the tattle tails from a helm position for trimming that will be subject to the Wynns sailing their HH44 for a while. Saso s

    Good to see you guys back making boat reviews again! I'm w/ you Nick, I prefer a raised helm position on a catamaran. Seems like different manufacturers have been trying to put them in all kinds of unique and novel places but the best place keeps coming back to being in a raised position. Beside the increased visibility, it's easy enough to build a small dodger to fully enclose many of these raised helms and with the glass like qualities of eisenglass, it's entirely possible to have great visibility in the worst of weather. I still prefer the use of glass and windshield wipers on some pilothouse sailboats but there are always tradeoffs.
    And 'livability'. Gotta have it on a cat. No sense having increased deck space and space below and not making it very comfy. No more spartan interiors with 4" foam mattresses and tiny heads. People now want a home on the water from their boats and I can't blame them. My 30' sailboat is not that big but she's very comfy because comfort is akin to safety. If people can get proper rest, stay warm (I'm in Alaska, remember?), and eat good food, that goes a long way to keeping the mind and body sharp onboard.
    Thnx for showing us the latest trend in boats I'll never be able to afford...unless I cash out my entire retirement package!

    Gunboat with a fly bridge is just wrong.... interesting to see the bigger windows and spaces, very nice for living, I'm not sure about it though. Interesting to see all that solar and batteries. How much solar? Yes. Incidentally have you had a look at the Dazcat Ocean cruiser - it has 4 potential helm positions and they will build it with whichever you want (or any combination of them) apparently they can be retrofitted too!

    • @AORD72

      Yep, terrible as it destroys the Gunboat brand name. Yesterday Gunboat equalled speed and class. Today Gunboat equals oblivious rich.

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well I don't know about that. I spend that kind of money for a custom boat and if I want a carbon fiber kiddie pool at the helm you better build one for me. Seriously though, if you build these things out of carbon fiber, it allows a lot of latitude for comfort while still blowing away heavier glass boats with the same sail area. Pretty easy to see the loss in mainsail area on that boat, but the rig is giant. I wonder what kind of difference it makes. I bet that boat still cooks.

    • @tomriley5790
      @tomriley5790 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheOKellys yeah ultimately money talks, with that specific requirement though I can see why you're having a hard time finding a new boat :-)! My main concern with flybridges is that they raise the centre of effort of the sail - which means more weight to counter the same sail area (and carbon wont change that). It does seem that "performance catamarans" are becoming more comfortable interesting to see the impact of carbon fibre being more readily available.

ORC57 is just a spaceship in a league of its own, not something the average cruising couple wants to handle though. We agree with you on the new HH designs, awesome but will have to wait & see. Then there’s Outremer & Balance with some rock solid performance cruising platforms with pro’s and con’s to each, in the end you just have to choose what calls to you and get out there on the water. The steering position on that Outremer is really nice with that bench seat. it's almost more of a chaise lounge.

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I don't think they dropped the ball. They made a design choice. An argument can be made that for an offshore boat, you don't need to have great visibility on the sails...you're not sitting there trimming 24/7. A higher priority is put on living space and protection from the elements. For us personally, we like to sit there trimming and steering and tweaking, so it's not the compromise we personally are looking for, but I'm going to bet it that it is the right thing for a lot of people.

    One of the frustrating things for me is this whole "eco-friendly" talk about an epoxy boat. The sheer volume of plastic sheeting & tubing that is used once & discarded in the making of the hulls astounds me. I mean, yay solar power & electric motors, but it doesn't change the fact that the boat itself is not at all recyclable. If I could build whatever I wanted (waving the magic wand here... ) give me something along the lines of the ExploCat aluminum hulls, shallow stub keels with winglets, both rudder skegged & pinned, maybe a deeper drop in rudder at the back of the sugar scoop. I like HH's secure flip up stern door sort of thing, very secure on a long passage. Let's pair that with Silent Yacht solar and motors, then add Sharrow props. I need a crane on the front that can hold an emergency sail, and put the dingy on the front deck. Is she going to FLY though the water? Not so much. Will she be able to keep me & mine well protected? Definitely.

    It wont be long until they make the same jump (as BEVs) and realize they can exchange the heavy diesel engines and tanks for like weight electric drives batteries and solar panels. The drive motors in reverse will work as generators when under wind so it will be a simpler and therefore more durable system. Side benefit will be 100% independence! With an onboard water maker one could be completely self sufficient at sea! Exciting times!

    All that fancy stuff adds weight to the boat which makes it not preform as well as a performance catamaran and causes the width of the hulls to be wider to support the added and unnecessary weight which causes you to go slower due to increased drag. That's why I'm going for a sailors catamaran which is for me the Mumby Cyber 48 or 50. The price is less than half of what many other designs are selling for used. That's because the aluminum is way less expensive than fiberglass and much faster to build which reduces labor cost and aluminum is a much better material for building boats with.

    I wish Kim and I could afford a new yacht, but it’s not in the cards for us. People have no understanding of how much a new 44ft+ catamaran costs, it’s literally several million dollars. We’re looking for a used trawler, as we’re looking to do the Great Loop and the Bahamas, and the price jump from say, mid 1990s boats to Mid 2000s is literally a 300% jump in price. A new one? Over $1 million. That’s utter insanity, but it speaks volumes about depreciation.

Where they modify soft woods and bamboo so that they end up rot proof and as strong as steel . Also look up a Yatching 🌍 article about how new boats are being built using wood .. then skinned with Flax or Basalt rather than glass or Carbon. 😉

Doesn't it also beat a lot of smaller power boats, as well as plenty of smaller cats that use more materials and sail worse?... And I'm guessing you could put on some more solar. Plus have some more foldable solar panels that can be stored in lockers to lay out on the trampolines when at anchor, or in a marina or some such...

    • @Sommers234

      With a little perspective you'll see ... even aside from the hemp, this is a vessel that could last thirty, forty plus years. People living aboard full or part time are no longer on land with all the ecological costs that incurs, between housing, utilities, travel by cars, etc.

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a really good question. Before owning Clarity (saildrives), I'd have told you I preferred shafts as they are less complicated and thus less hassle. However, we had no problems with our SD60s. We changed out the drive seals preventatively every other year and never had any ingress issue. In contrast, we had all sorts of issues with our shaft drives on the other boats...coupler issues, packing gland issues, cutlass bearing issues. I think it is very hard to make blanket statements because we know of people who have had lots of problems with other models of saildrives. So at this point, I'd say I have zero preference. Each have benefits. How they are installed and maintained makes the biggest difference between boats. At least in our experience.

    • @Lana_Warwick

      I prefer shaft for safety, less/smaller hole if container, shallower, less drag, can full service seals at anchor, lots of reasons. Not in Q, diesel outboards, less drag with tilt-up, easier to service/replace, more cabin space, lots of reasons. But emotor is the future.
