The Whiskey Dic great line lol. I heard axl rose say once “ drinking a bottle of jack daniels you will find something to do and you won’t be bored, it might be illegal and you might wake up somewhere you don’t want to be like jail, but you will find something to do” lol it’s true
My definition of sipping whisky is Evan Williams because it's cheap and college is expensive. Me and a few friends can enjoy it in the backyard when we can catch a moment together.
Jack Daniels is made in Lynchburg, Tennessee. It was a dry county then, but all the workers got a free pint every six weeks. When I was 13, I went there with my dad. We took the tour and it was really cool. I grew up in Tennessee and jack is still my favorite drink. On the tour they told us the story of him dying from gang green due to kicking his safe. I'm 50 now.
Same! My grandmother took me and I remember getting stung by a bee for the first time at where the mash for the honey whiskey was, I guess they were mad that they took their honey...
I am a great lover of JDs and I enjoy every single drop of it.Last week I added Gentleman Jack to my collection which I am going to enjoy during Christmas.Incidentlly,I thoroughly enjoyed the informative interview.
My friends introduced me to Jack Daniel's and bought a 1.75 l to drink on my birthday. Lots of jack and cokes. So far, this whiskey and Jim Beam are what I know. I look forward to trying others and sharing with my friends and family.
old no 7 is a solid whiskey folks, my favorite for many years, and unfairly gets bashed on reviews, but if you want to nose and carefully sip your whiskey and spend a whole load of money -then sure the likes of old forester and eagle rare are a really lovely pour.
Tour is very cool. The air temps by the spring are incredibly cool even on a hot day. By the way, his name is Jack Daniel without the "S" on the end. His whiskey is called Jack Daniel's with the "S."
Old no. 7 was the first whiskey I tried. It was one shot after a night of mixed drinks in college. That one shot of Jack was what uh... finally turned the tides in my belly lol
My first whiskey as well. I ended up (unbeknownst to me) paired with the biggest partier on campus my freshman year. Did a lot of shots that semester...
Strangely when I was in college I never got into whiskey shots even though I liked whiskey. I was more interested in gourmet food so craft cocktails was my bigger interest and some wine too. I was that weird college kid that liked martinis 🍸
When I was in the Navy one of my roommates was a Jack man, he kept the (rinsed) empties in a bookcase, we added one every weekend. I always had Jack and Ginger (ginger ale).
I just tried Gentleman Jack minutes ago. Is lighter, goes easier on the buds and yeah, it can be a beginners' whiskey. But I still prefer the Old #7. I was hoping to taste Gentleman and it was good, but not as good as the original. But that's just my opinion and taste. Great channel.
Thanks Miguel. If you're looking for other bourbon starters, check out my video on starter bourbons. (Not cross promoting, just think you could get some good ideas)

I had a bottle of jack Daniel’s from a duty free store in Singapore and I swear to you it tasted much better than what we get hear. It was creamy, delicious and smooth.
I love jack daniels (my fathers and grandfathers favorite) and the gentleman jack is the same but way more mellow and smooth. It doesn't have the burn that old no. 7 has and the drunk is very mellow. Over all they are both good
Just taking my first ever sip of Gentleman Jack whilst watching this video! JD and coke is my go to and I rarely drink spirits straight (apart from Bison Grass vodka that I drink freezing cold) but I might be turning a corner with this one it's so smooth and nice a lot easier to drink than standard JD.
No matter what all the folk say, I love Jack Daniels. I really like the taste. Together with 1 Ice cube i get's a delicious flavor and it reveals a nice banana smell & flavor.
I don't care what anyone says...it seems like it's popular to bash Jack nowadays for whatever reason, many saying it's over rated. I don't find it over rated at all. I've tried many higher end whiskies over the last 8 years, American, Irish and Scotch. I do love Irish and Scotch, but good ol No. 7 is still my all time favorite whiskey. It is very distinctive and don't understand all the hate it gets.
In the spirit of never letting old videos die, I figured I'd comment. I've tried a lot of whiskey at this point (much of it higher end) and recently had some Jack Daniel's at a casino. The last time I'd had JD I didn't like it at all. To my surprise, I smelled a lot of banana and really enjoyed it neat. I bought a bottle of the stuff and am rather confused at how much I enjoy it. When was the last time you had some?
+Expel 23 Last weekend during the super bowl. I had a couple Jack and Coke. They're a solid drink when you don't necessarily want anything super fancy.
It was my understanding from a salesman for the brand back in the 1970's, that the "old" in "Old #7" was to distinguish it from Jack Daniels #7 Green Label. At that point in time , all they had was the Green Label and the Black Label. Exact same whiskey, except the Black was aged longer. Hence "old" compared to the Green.
Great and very fair review of this iconic Tennessee Whiskey. I loved the "A drink that we've all been on the wrong side of" comment, because it's so true! I like Old #7 on the rocks or in a Whiskey Sour, and Gentleman Jack is definitely best served neat!
+John Wotring True story, this was my first ever video, and while thinking and writing the script, that was the first thing I wrote. Glad to hear it's still resonating!
Great channel, I did this test with Gentleman Jack and with No 6 distillers edition which is *meant* to be the same as the no 7 save the higher ABV, I much preferred the no 6 had a lot more fruity character where as the GJ lacks character for me and has no real punch to the flavour profile. Gentleman Jack seems to be a bit timid to me just to cut down from the original flavour of Jack.
Regardless of the variation Jack Daniels Single Barrel is delicious. Definitely something to give as a gift to a friend who normally drinks Jack and Coke, and something to purchase every once and a while.
I like what you said about Gentleman Jack being a good starting point for whiskeys. What other Bourbons or Tennessee Whiskeys do you think would be good to educate someone into american whiskey?
None at the moment, I'm an Irish Whiskey drinker: Redbreast 12 and Green Spot are my absolute favorites. Now I was debating myself between buying a Gentleman Jack bottle of Tennessee Whiskey or a Elijah Craig 12 Bourbon to start educating myself and I was wondering if you have any other suggestion. What do you think?
Awesome! New blood. I have a few recommendations. Try the original Woodford Reserve Distillers Select. Also, four roses bourbon is a good one. Just their standard offering is a good choice to try out. Also, Makers Mark and Know Creek are fantastic... Bulleit Bourbon just won an award for their bourbon, so that's a good choice as well. Let me know what you think. I have reviews on this channel of the Bulleit bourbon and the woodford reserve
I really enjoyed watching your videos.....Looks like i got to broaden my horizons.....this old musician was a Jack junkie.....Since i'm retired, i had to go to a lower shelf.....Ezra Brooks fits my budget.....
Thanks for the Jack Daniel's review. I'm a big fan of Jack so I really enjoyed it. Have you ever tried Jim Beam Devil's Cut? That's another one I enjoy and would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for the great videos.
+Leslie Teston I have not tried that but I have tried Angel's Envy which I believe is made very similarly. Have you tried the other Jack Daniel's expressions? I wouldn't recommend Sinatra Select but the Single Barrel is great
The Whiskey Dic Yes, I have tried most everything Jack makes. Except the Sinatra. I'll take your advice.... if I have a friend who buys some, I'll try it. But I won't buy a bottle of it simply because of it's price. I tried Single Barrel for the first time last week and it was VERY good! I can't imagine Sinatra being better than that.
I hated JD forever, but recently tried it again and was surprised to find I liked it. As a scotch drinker, that surprised me. With JD what I noticed was a taste of bananas which was enjoyable, and could definitely taste the influence of the sugar maple charcoal. Thinking I'll have to try the Gentleman Jack.
Grew up thinking I hated this stuff, always handed to me with coke, and really did not like. 20 years later, a bottle that had sat untouched (gift) in my cabinet was opened and I had a go of it straight. You know what, not bad at all - perfectly drinkable. Nothing outstanding of course, but lets just say the bottle didn't last very long. PS - Ouch @ mic noise ;-)
I used to be a 'Jack' man but got a bottle of Evan Williams black label (86 proof). I was amazed how the flavor was 'fuller', less watered. Now I cannot really enjoy a 80 proof as they all seem to give me the opinion that it is watered out. An 80 proof Scotch, on the other hand, like Glenmorangie Original, allows some of the more subtle flavors to come through. Do you notice this also?
+PCShogun Back in my early 20s when I had zero money but still wanted whiskey and coke, I switched from Jack to Evan Williams black label. I always found that equal quantities of EW vs. JD would give me a hangover. So I dealt with it for a while but eventually switched back. As for Scotch? Scotch is such a different animal, but yes... Scotch doesn't seem to be about the alcohol, more about flavor, so ABV does seem to have less importance.
Thanks for the reply. I am not a big drinker, preferring to sip a few ounces straight up, nursing it for awhile. Hangovers have never been much of a problem for me due the the small quantity. Wonder if that charcoal filtering is what makes that difference in your case? Hey, thanks for the reply!
+PCShogun I've wondered the same thing personally. At some point I'll get to Evan Williams and hopefully come up with an answer. At that point in my life I was drinking three pretty heavy pours at a time with my coke, and also staying up super late... So it could have been more than just the whiskey that factored into it.
I just had a thought. I should send you a bottle of a local distillery's offering, a frankenstein version of whiskey (bourbon according to them). It is 'artificially' aged in a 'reactor' to give you a 4 year old whiskey in about 3 months. Personally, it was some of the worst swill I ever tasted. Probably makes that Johnny Walker Red Label taste good.
Whiskey Dic you are very informative & you get to the point. I got into Whiskey collecting & testing last fall. I have a collection of 30 +. I am not telling you this to brag but to let you know you have taught me how to taste & enjoy whiskey on a totally different level. I love the taste of whiskey & didn't get the whole nosing & it taste like plums. Your the first video that made me get.
+Julia Grabowski That's really impressive Julia! I'm psyched you think so highly if Me, and I'm happy that you're learning from my channel. Comments like this always inspire me :)
Gentelman Jack was the first "better" whiskey I bought after a friend gave me a taste. It is well made and smooth and has probably put many on the path to good whiskey but its so light that when you try to drink it in a tasting with others you better try it first as after just about anything else the nose is gone and so is the taste. That second charcoal filtering after it has aged in the barrel takes out a lot and gives you whiskey with training wheels.
New subscriber here! I’d like to start drinking whiskey straight but I am having a hard time with the transition. Any advice? I’ve enjoyed Jack and Coke for about a year now.
Start off with speyside scotches. They're easily approachable and tend to be a bit fruity. More genrally... add ice and water until you wean yourself down to drinking them straight
When I bought a bottle it was only pint sized, so it only lasted..three or four days? With the Gentleman Jack it’ll probably last me a good while as I’m most likely gonna bring it out on special occasions.
Good information! I definitely enjoy your videos. I simply dislike whiskey and Coke. or anything with Coke. I can enjoy an old fashioned or other cocktails though. Personal tastes are all over the place huh?LOL
I had a really bad experience with jack, drank about half a bottle straight, felt fine right up until I tried to stand, long story cut short I fell straight on my face, passed out and woke up the next morning feeling like I had been trampled, haven't touched it since 🤢
Jack kicked the safe and got blood poisoning of the toe and died. Limb took over. I have been drinking Jack for 50 years and a square. Good stuff .Good people that work there.Chreers
I remember last year at a Christmas party i drank half a bottle of Jack with Coke then drank half a bottle of JD Honey and passed tf out in my car lmao. Woke up next morning feeling like i was actually dead lol. Still love Jack to this day tho, great drink.
Honestly Jack was fine until somebody introduced me to "higher tier" whisky.. Now I always have Scotch and to me Jack's standard bottle is as good a drink as gasoline D:
It's totally an acquired taste. Depending on how you drink it and what proof it is, you'll have different effects. Check out some of my beginner guides if you want to see where to start
Hi little late to this but the gold bottle he is referring to is jack daniels no27 it runs for about 90.00 USD sometimes cheaper. I bought a bottle on a trip not long ago and plan to crack it open in a week when i get home. Great channel btw .Cheers hope this clarified things.
The story about Old No. 7 is totally different according to wikipedia. "According to Daniel's biographer, the origin of the "Old No. 7" brand name was the number assigned to Daniel's distillery for government registration.[2][15] He was forced to change the registration number when the federal government redrew the district, and he became Number 16 in district 5 instead of No. 7 in district 4. However, he continued to use his original number as a brand name, since his brand reputation already had been established."
Think it over priced whiskey. Believe the proof was higher years ago which to me doesn’t taste as good as it did twenty plus years ago. Cheers 🍻 really like your videos
I love jack, particularly the single barrel. Sure, jack isn't complex Ike scotch or some of the irish whiskey's or high end bourbons, but to outsiders, my wife, for example, it all tastes like kerosene. She loves the smells etc, but as soon as she sips it, cringe....I just laugh and enjoy my whiskey, whether it's jack or Connemara. Oh, love your channel! And I never mix my dram with anything. ...love whiskey for whiskey's sake..Cheers!
I really enjoy your videos, keep them coming! I also enjoy Jack n Coke. I grew up drinking beer cause dad got sick on moonshine once and wouldn’t drink hard liquor. Anyway, Jack Daniels was the fist whisky I tried. I’ve enjoyed several different whiskys and scotches since those early years. Looking forward to trying many more.
At this point on my bourbon journey, I don't care if it sounds snobby or elitist. Jack Daniels No. 7 is trash. It's a great starter whiskey, but only mixed with cola. It's not a sipping whiskey and for me if I can't drink it straight, I can't be bothered with it. Gentleman Jack is underrated and far superior to its better known brother whiskey. I'd guzzle a bottle of GJ long before a skunky bottle of Town Branch (horrible!) or Wild Turkey 81.
I'm with you... kind of. I'll still totally drink jack and coke. Its nostalgic for me. But I wont drink it straight. That being said, single barrel is a surprisingly good dram.
My whiskey journey was Jim Bean, to Jack Green, Jack Black, Wild Turkey, then Weller. I stopped drinking whiskey for a few decades and then I was introduced to Knob Creek. I have tried Basil Hayden and it was very good, but I preferred Knob Creek. Now it's time to try something new.
I agree! I wanted to like it as I pride myself on not being an elitist but I was trying buffalo trace, eagle rare, Woodford reserve, WR double Oaked gentleman jack and Russell Creek (and really enjoying them) and I thought I would try no 7 to see how it compared hoping to be pleasantly surprised, I wasn’t it was trash. Whisky Dic I love your work but i can’t agree with you on this one
Anyone who smells "birthday cake" in a whiskey, that is totally fine. Nosing and tasting whiskey is a 100% personal and individual experience so if you get birthday cake on the nose then that is great and you are not wrong.
LOL... "a drink that we've all been on the wrong side of". So true
3 years have gone by, that was the first thing I decided I wanted to say on my first video and you're the first person to mention it. Thanks :)
The Whiskey Dic great line lol. I heard axl rose say once “ drinking a bottle of jack daniels you will find something to do and you won’t be bored, it might be illegal and you might wake up somewhere you don’t want to be like jail, but you will find something to do” lol it’s true
Yep more times than I care to admit.
Wow, thats a stretch.
Used to be green actually which is more appropriate given the whole Nearest Green thing
Your brain isn't working right. May want to have that checked out
This is the only whiskey review channel that I admire for its honesty. No fancy crap and all real info. Cheers!
Thanks man!
I have a lot of memories associated with drinking Jack. Iconic.
I lost a lot of memories by drinking Jack.
@@armadillotoe I heard a lot of stories about myself after drinking Jack 😂
I didn’t drink it growing up though. But have tried it on very rare occasions.
My definition of sipping whisky is Evan Williams because it's cheap and college is expensive. Me and a few friends can enjoy it in the backyard when we can catch a moment together.
+Dirt 117 without a doubt!
I drink it too. White Label is the best, but black is okay as well.
I'm 50 now.
I didn't know about the free pint every six weeks. That's pretty cool!
*Gangrene
It's still a dry county right?
Yup
Same! My grandmother took me and I remember getting stung by a bee for the first time at where the mash for the honey whiskey was, I guess they were mad that they took their honey...

@7:35 Gentlemen Jack is distilled through charcoal twice rather than filtered through charcoal twice?
Hmm... I'm not sure what I meant by that. Gentleman jack is filtered twice. I must have made a mistake :)
Great channel, I did this test with Gentleman Jack and with No 6 distillers edition which is *meant* to be the same as the no 7 save the higher ABV, I much preferred the no 6 had a lot more fruity character where as the GJ lacks character for me and has no real punch to the flavour profile. That's a pretty accurate assessment of Gentleman Jack. 😃
Your St. Louis World's fair mention was 1904, winning a gold medal for best whiskey.
Single Barrel is my favorite, but if you drink a bottle every week like me it's a bit too expensive
so good ol nr7 it is.
Just found this 😀. Huge difference from your recent videos. I’ve been wanting to try Gentlemen Jack but keep hearing Old No 7 is better… torn lol.
Really depends. They're very different. Old #7 really is best as a mixer. Gentlemen jack is decent as a sipper
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Well I don’t mix. I only sip these days so I’ll pick up GJD. Besides I stock Jack also as is 😆. Thx! Have a great weekend!
You too!
Good review and the single barrel is amazing in my opinion
New subscriber here! I’d like to start drinking whiskey straight but I am having a hard time with the transition. Any advice? I’ve enjoyed Jack and Coke for about a year now.
Start off with speyside scotches. They're easily approachable and tend to be a bit fruity.
More genrally... add ice and water until you wean yourself down to drinking them straight
The Whiskey Dic Ok, thanks! Updates coming soon... Any recommendations for an affordable Speyside Scotch? Preferably around $20.
Closest you're going to get is the no age statement Glen Moray or the Speyburn 10. Both I'd suggest for you personally
how long does a bottle of jd last for you guys? I got mine last week and it's already almost gone.
+Peautiful Benis For me? It can last a loooong time. I'm not drinking Jack and coke nearly as much as I used to
The Whiskey Dic Hey thanks for the quick reply. Maybe I should cut down a bit haha.... subscribed btw
+Peautiful Benis Thanks! Your name is clever. Made me laugh when I saw it!
+HossKirkland Variety is the spice of life
I used to drink Jack with orange juice, cannot remember where I got that from- probably part of what gave me ulcers lol. Cheers.
+Jason Mcdonald Dear God... I don't want to try that
Silver Select
Single Barrel
The best whiskeys, thanks Jack
I like this video on how you introduce what you're drinking next. Can you do this now on? Oh, fun beginning
I stopped when I wanted to be able to switch things up to match trends in search and such. I dont think ill go back to this
Have you tried the JD Rye yet? I just picked up a bottle!
Not yet but I should really get to it sooner than later. What do you think?
What your whiskey you drink always
Great video my friend, I enjoy your channel
Thanks!
Jack and coke has to be the most iconic mixed drink. Any drinker probally has had one at some point.
Without a doubt. I've probably drank more of those than any other mixed drink
I had a really bad experience with jack, drank about half a bottle straight, felt fine right up until I tried to stand, long story cut short I fell straight on my face, passed out and woke up the next morning feeling like I had been trampled, haven't touched it since 🤢
+GamingScotsman we've all had that experience. It's why we love and hate jack :)
A stable love-hate relationship indeed.
gets me every time lol
I have more JD blackouts than I can count. But from what I was told they were good times
Then rock on
Jack kicked the safe and got blood poisoning of the toe and died. Limb took over. I have been drinking Jack for 50 years and a square. Good
stuff .Good people that work there.Chreers
Very interesting stuff 👍🙂🥃
Thanks! You should check out some of my newer videos!
Will do 👍🙂
What about Uncle Nearest???
I did a video on it. Check it out :)
Your a pretty cool dude Mr. Whiskey dictionary! Come over and some time and let's have a bourbon sour!
I remember last year at a Christmas party i drank half a bottle of Jack with Coke then drank half a bottle of JD Honey and passed tf out in my car lmao. Woke up next morning feeling like i was actually dead lol. Still love Jack to this day tho, great drink.
Oof.... I've turned a bottle of Jack upside down to my lips a few times, it's always been fun for about 30 minutes... then it's been a big mistake.
Honestly Jack was fine until somebody introduced me to "higher tier" whisky.. Now I always have Scotch and to me Jack's standard bottle is as good a drink as gasoline D:
yeah but not alot of people have $150-$200 for some bookers or elijah craig.
Your point is valid, but just in case you're misinformed. Bookers is only about 75 dollars and Elijah Craig barrel proof is just over 100
Is whiskey an acquired taste? I tried it for the first time the other day and each sip I took made me light-headed.
It's totally an acquired taste. Depending on how you drink it and what proof it is, you'll have different effects.
Check out some of my beginner guides if you want to see where to start
Alcohol is an acquired taste. But I've always liked whiskey from the first time I tried it
I often thought "No. 7" was just the number of a recipe for a mashbill.
Have you tried the Gold bottle? I LOVE that one... but it is 90CAD so... i don't get it often... actually, just once to try :-D
+r1master Gold Bottle? What's it called? I've never seen it.
Hi little late to this but the gold bottle he is referring to is jack daniels no27 it runs for about 90.00 USD sometimes cheaper. I bought a bottle on a trip not long ago and plan to crack it open in a week when i get home. Great channel btw .Cheers hope this clarified things.
+outlawcountryman Thanks! I'll have to look for it
Old no 7 is the only whiskey that never disappoints
Even a rye guy such as myself fancies a jack and cola every now and then
I tried JD Winter Jack cider, and it taste more like apple cider then whiskey plus it’s 30 proof and there’s no kick!
Yea I didnt mind that either
Hey buddy..can you make a video on the benefits of drinking whiskey
Hmm... benefits of drinking whisky. Probably!
I actually like it as a sipping whiskey. On ice
Cake icing has vanilla in it, no?
The story about Old No. 7 is totally different according to wikipedia. "According to Daniel's biographer, the origin of the "Old No. 7" brand name was the number assigned to Daniel's distillery for government registration.[2][15] He was forced to change the registration number when the federal government redrew the district, and he became Number 16 in district 5 instead of No. 7 in district 4. However, he continued to use his original number as a brand name, since his brand reputation already had been established."
Funny. That wasn't there at the time of my original review
And what about JD rye?
I enjoyed your video, and thoroughly enjoyed drinking with you
Awesome!
They do not distill it in the charcoal. They filter it.
Did I say they distill it? If so, i must have misspoke. Super old video, editing was a little tougher back thrn
Very informative vid! Thx man
Thanks!
Think it over priced whiskey. Believe the proof was higher years ago which to me doesn’t taste as good as it did twenty plus years ago. Cheers 🍻 really like your videos
+Arkansas Beer reviews Thanks!
It used to b 45v it's crap now I used to love it but they ruined it..
What about JD honey and JD fire?
I dont review flavored whisky on this channel, at least not yet.
Never been a sipper or a mixer. Never acquired a taste for sour mash
They still sell green label Jack.
I love jack, particularly the single barrel. Sure, jack isn't complex
Ike scotch or some of the irish whiskey's or high end bourbons, but to outsiders, my wife, for example, it all tastes like kerosene. She loves the smells etc, but as soon as she sips it, cringe....I just laugh and enjoy my whiskey, whether it's jack or Connemara. Oh, love your channel! And I never mix my dram with anything. ...love whiskey for whiskey's sake..Cheers!
JD Single barrel is a solid whiskey!
The reason for to somebody thought smell birthday cake in the whiskey is because for mom put whiskey in the cake's recipe 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video, I like your attitude, you look very nice !
Thanks!
I noticed a banana taste when I mixed a little water with the old #7.
The story I heard was that Jack Daniels learned how to make whiskey from a slave.
Yes. Nearest Green came up with the original Jack Daniels recipe!!
5:35 maybe she had 6 girls and it was his 7th love
"not great as a sipping whisky" well as a sipping whisky i really enjoy it
I envy you then! I spend way too much expensive whiskey :)
My gut hurts just looking at the bottle and remembering that medicine tasting stuff...
The man who died of frustration aka he forgot his safe combo kicked his safe broke his toe and died of gangrene
nice vid bro. I found too much noise on the background btw
+xiwi Thanks. Yea, this is my first video. The newer ones have much better lighting and sound
+Beetle Bailey What other scotches/ bourbons do you really like?
Is this your first video I’m trying to start from the bottom up Cheers
Yup! The reviews are numbered
I've definitely had it with coke😁
I Accidentally tried a sip of it when I was six and I thought it was Coca-Cola
That's hilarious.
Ah the memories of getting wasted on my 19th birthday (not in the US)
I never drink alcohol ever and i will but i dont know what i start with
Give me a name please thx
Dewars
I have a bottle signed and engraved from the family friend that invited gentleman jack.
I quit drinking JD7 when it changed from 90p to 80p. The taste changed and I never drank it after that.
i like Old No. 7 more tbh
I always knew Jack Daniels was an uncle ,:)
