Matte Black Trick - Custom Paint Tip When Spraying Matte or Flat Colors

  • CollisionBlast.com - When spraying matte or flat colors, I have a quick simple trick for you to try. This method does require basic buffing skills so be sure to try this on a test panel to perfect method before trying on your car paint finish.
    The end result makes a very cool custom paint effect, which does not have any paint lines. I don't know if there is anyone else using this method or if they have had satisfactory results. All I know is that it worked well when we have performed it. I recommend trying on a test panel to determine if you like the results or not.

    If you can not find the color you are looking for in a matte, you can spray it with regular base coat and top coat it with matte clear, which will give it the matte look. Thanks for watching!

    I have a 1948 pontiac silverstreak i originally painted with the cheapest flat black spray cans i could find, and because it looked like a black board, I used a piece of white chock and started playing around drawing flames on it and it looked good so I masked them off and painted with a gloss orange spray can. After a few summers it started to fade from the sun, I tried wet sanding with 2000 grit then I used the mothers cleaner wax with my power buffer on the flames to try to bring the color back and take the orange peel out. When I went over on to the flat black I noticed a bit of a shine so I ended up wet sanding and power buffing the whole car. I had people asking me where I had it painted it looked amazing.

    Cool Mate, that looks Magic but the only issue I can see is that the shiny section may go dull again pretty quickly in the sun. So, do you know how long it will stay glossy like that? I ask because polishing the gloss section would be pretty tricky to do without taping it all up again.

    To show this two tone effect best, which kind of clear would you spray over it?
    wouldnt a matte clear coat take the shine away that you have created?
    does the two tone appearance go away if you do a few coats of clear?
    its great your passion transfers into the students creativity!

    • @CarAddictGarage
      @CarAddictGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the clear coat would take the shine away. If you are using a matte clear, then I would sand and buff the clear in the areas you want glossy. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Donny, I'm looking for some advice, I'm painting a bicycle frame, matte black and i wanted to create a matte white finish on other parts. Now i've sprayed the whole bike with grey primer, sanded with 220 grit and resprayed the white parts with a white primer (as i can't seem to get hold of a white matte spray can for some reason).
    Now I'm wondering, should i sand down the white primer with a high grit 1200 + then add a clear lacquer and sand that down further to give the same tone as the matte black i have (the matte black is pretty much the same as what yours is in this video) or should i just spray over the primer without sanding then sand down the lacquer gloss so it's only mild? Bit lost as i don't wanna mess up the finish.
    Cheers

    My 73 Vega was painted hot rod black (satin black) and when I covered the car with a tarp for transporting it during a rainy day, the tarp was flapping in the wind and created a few glossy spots on the paint.. Is there any way to fix this without re-painting it? Im pretty sure a single stage paint was used..

    • @CarAddictGarage
      @CarAddictGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is an excellent question, but I do not know what you can do. You can't buff it or anything to remove the gloss marks. Maybe the weather will fade it back out....not sure. Has anyone else reading this had this happened....and know how to fix it? Please let us know if you do.

    • @luno5461
      @luno5461 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if the top layer is not a transparent but black then using very fine sandpaper(2000,3000 or even 5000 would be better - rally depends on the rest of your paint) would be fine, and I recommend wet sanding it to avoid "clogging" the paper and decreasing chances of scratches - which is really important with these super-fine sandpapers. However don't even think about doing this with a transparent paint (clear lacquer) sanding it will just makes it look scratched (white). Oh and you could always buff it up(even just rubbing some clean cloth would do, if you need to match that exact sheen of the rest of the car)

    Unless that was a standard clear that you added a flattening agent too, the gloss retention in a true flat clear will not last. After time the gloss will die out and what was glossy will just look dull.

    That's a tough one to call. If it was painted with 1K ya have to be careful with choice of solvents trying to clean it. If it was waxed in the sun and left with white cloudy spots you have one more problem compounding (no pun intended) this issue.i say chemical wash it in the shade after soap washing first. See if it goes away and if not looks like repaint.

      His paint had no clear coat, and matte paints don't usually get a clear coat, he did mention on a comment above that you can use matte clear coat and the follow the same steps but IT WILL SHINE, if I was you I would wet sand with 1500 long enough to lift most of the clear coat and then add a black matte layer and leave it like that it will do what you want. Hope this helps

  • @123greengoblin123

    the point of a matte clear coat is that it isnt as flat and perfect as a normal, it has imperfections in it, thats why they dont feel as slippery as normal clear coat.
    by buffing those imperfections out u create a straight and more perfect clear coat wich will be glossy because u buffed the imperfections out.
    if u want it matte again then u'd have to re clear it with the matte.
